Gargoyles - The First Season DVD
Gargoyles - The Complete First Season, Special 10th Anniversary Edition 2-Disc DVD Set
Perhaps the most intriguing, and darkest, animated series to ever come out of Disney animation, Gargoyles finally makes it to the DVD format in a special 10th anniversary edition. Exploring themes not often seen in afternoon cartoons, such as trust, betrayal, prejudice, and the loss of loved ones, Gargoyles brought a richness and depth to a field that usually consisted of overly sweet and insipid shows aimed only at children.
The series follows the saga of a small band of ancient gargoyles, creatures who are stone by day, and flesh and blood at night, that are brought to modern day Manhattan and must survive in a world that is alien to them. Already outcast in their native Scotland of a thousand years ago, spurned by the humans whose castle they protect, the gargoyles are thrust in to the present day, where they must content not only with fearful and treacherous humans, but also with the calamity of the present day big city. Led by the noble Goliath, perfectly voiced by David Keith, the creatures make their way in a time and place that may or may not be ready for them.
The DVD beautifully captures the look and sound of the series. Many of the stories feature the transformation of the gargoyles, taking place at twilight and dawn, and the animators paint the backgrounds in purples and reds and yellows to render the setting and rising sun. The composition and visuals, as well as the surround sound in the episodes help transport the viewer into the world of the gargoyles.
In addition to all thirteen episodes from the first season, the two disk set also features some goodies like audio commentary from the two series co-creators on the first five episodes, and David Keith comes in after the first two episodes. The original show pitch by co-creator Greg Weisman is included, and the show remains relatively unchanged from the first concept. The neatest addition is a piece called The Gathering of the Gargoyles, which documents a fan convention by those people who have been deeply affected by the show and its themes. As many of us have been to a convention of one kind or another, we can relate to those who dress up as characters, have seminars on the themes and realities of the show, and display fan art to other enthusiasts. Its an interesting insight into those who lives have been touched by this animated series.
It's a great set, and an amazing story. I hope you check out the Gargoyles DVD set. Meanwhile, I'm going on Ebay and see if anyone is selling a Goliath PVC figure so I can complete my collection. Farewell!
