yes, on broadband.
Crichton Kicks - May 30, 2004 11:06 PM (GMT)
All's you need is broadband, Bit Torrent and somewhere to find the torrent needed, which we have with
Suprnova :)
When you have downloaded BT you need to install it. After that goto Suprnova at the link above and click on TV SHOWS at the top. You will the get the Quick Links to all the shows covered. Scroll down and select STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE. This will then load up all the Enterprise torrents at the bottom of the screen, you'll need to scroll down to see them. This will then list all the Enterprise torrents currently available. Select the one you want, ie. Enterprise 3x24. You want one that's either 350MB or 400+MB to be of sufficient quality that you can play the movie back through Windows Media Player or DivX Player perfectly at fullscreen. When you have seen the torrent you want right click on it and "save target as", you will then be prompted for somewhere to save the torrent. Remember where you're saving it to as you'll need to go there in a second. When you've found somewhere to d/l the torrent to save it. Now this will d/l the torrent for you to the directory you specified. This will take 3 or 4 seconds. Once completed you need to go into the directory where you saved it and left click it to open it. The torrent will then open up asking where you want to store the file when it's downloading. Again select somewhere you'll be able to find it later. As soon as you've selected the place you want to d/l the movie file to press save. The torrent will then open up and look to connect to other users. It may start slowly to begin with, don't worry about that, the longer you're connected the faster it gets. Mine usually goes up to 40/50 kb/s after 4 or 5 minutes. Once the file has finished downloading (you'll see a progress bar as the torrent opens up) you can now disconnect and go to where you saved the file. Click on it to open via Windows Media Player or DivX Player and that should then play the video for you. You can resize it to fullscreen and it should play perfectly.

so how long does an episode of ENTERPRISE take then?
Crichton Kicks - May 31, 2004 09:38 AM (GMT)
usually 3 or 4 hours dependent on your download speed, which depends on how many other people are d/l the same file at the same time. But generally speaking 3 or 4 hours, which isn't too bad.
If you have to switch your PC off mid-download don't worry. Just disconnect the torrent and when you're ready to start again just do as you did originally. Goto where you saved the torrent, open it and specify the same directory to continue saving it. It will then pick up where it left off.

Ok
I have loaded bttorrent
I have gone to suprnova and I have selected tonights episode of ENTERPRISE as I think M wants to go out!!!!
it went straight from selecting episode to asking me where I wanted to save it (missed out the other bit)
currently telling me it is going to take 30 hours??????
Crichton Kicks - May 31, 2004 09:46 AM (GMT)
Don't concentrate too much on the time just yet Ken. Just look at the d/l speed. If you can get a d/l speed of about 30 it should do in about 4 hours. Bear in mind that your speed should increase the longer that you're connected for.

highest it has got up to at present is 7!!!
now gone down to 3 but I have only been downloading for about 2 mins.
what is it uploading?
is there an accelerator or anything I should have downloaded or is there anything I should switch off which could be affecting it????
How much space does an average episode take up??
Crichton Kicks - May 31, 2004 10:03 AM (GMT)
Leave it for a bit Kendo, the speed should increase.
There are no accelerators, the torrent you're downloading now is the episode in AVI/MPG format, hence will play on your media player.
Depending on the file you're downloading it'll take up around 350/450MB.
This is where CD Burners come in handy ;)

The other thing with BT is that sometimes, especially with Suprnova it's a bit of trial and error. As I said earlier the speed is dependent on there being other people downloading at the same time, and the number of people. On Suprnova for example the torrent that you picked out, the numbers next to that torrent, the higher the better. I sometimes d/l and try a few torrents of the same episode before I find the one that hits a high d/l speed. What you tend ot find though also is that the newer the episode the quicker it d/ls as well. And the good thing about Enterprise is that it's the most downloaded series on the net :)

thing has stopped!
Crichton Kicks - May 31, 2004 10:59 AM (GMT)
I'd try another torrent Ken. You'll find that there'll be 4 or 5 for the same episode over there.
Trial and error, try them all if you need to until you get one with a high d/l speed.

Nah we went upto Blackpool on Saturday, today's just a chill out today before we're back at work tomorrow.
ROTK this afternoon, I managed to talk her out of the marathon
With regards to the torrents, I tend to go for the 350MB ones, you can fit two on a CD-R then ;)
You might be better trying ZERO HOUR though, it's a newer episode :)

NOW SPEED 52!!!!!!
sorry that i am so ignorant where computers are concerned - I have a friend in Amsterdam who is always telling me off because of it just because he knows computers inside out!!!
Crichton Kicks - May 31, 2004 09:32 PM (GMT)
There's certainly no need to apologise Ken. Different people have different levels of understanding where computers are concerned. I'm just as in the dark on lots of things. The important thing is that we who do know how to do these things can help :)
Speed 52 ?? Great stuff. Should be done in no time.
I'd leave it at one for the moment if I were you Ken, if you try to do another at the same time it will almost certainly reduce your average speeds on the both of them.

O.K!!
gone down to 10 but still telling me it will be about 4 hours - dont mind if it takes that long!!
goth willow fan - May 31, 2004 09:38 PM (GMT)
It's best not to "clock watch" with bt - the speed can fluctuate a lot depending on who your connecting with at any given moment.
Crichton Kicks - May 31, 2004 09:38 PM (GMT)
The speed will more than likely fluctuate. The time is never 100% indicative of the time it will really take, I've for example had torrents where it'll be d/l at 10 and says it's going to take 10 hours and then it jumps up to 50 and apparently it'll still take 10 hours and vice versa. Just let it run, it'll be done soon enough.
I tend to start mine before I go to bed and by the time I get up it's done and ready to play.

14 mins to go till my first download should finish

Crichton Kicks - May 31, 2004 11:57 PM (GMT)
Ok. Try it through Windows Media Player. It depends on how upto date your codecs are you may need to update them before it'll play. Give the file a chance to play through it when you've finished and then if there's a problem we'll have a bash at it tomorrow night.

I use either Windows Media Player or more likely DivX Player, which you can get
here.
Just try to play the movie and see if it works, if it's distorted we may need to get you some new codecs or DivX Player :)
