Title: 4 - Aliens Of London

ken1701e - April 16, 2005 07:28 PM (GMT)
ok, so the first two parter of the new series.

I thought that it was a good episode but perhaps the weakest of the season so far. The farting joke got a bit tedious by the end, although kids will love that.

The principal leads were all excellent and it was good to see UNIT mentioned.

Looking forward to next week.

That's pretty much what I thought, too (and I am aware of the irony of a Scaper thinking there were too many fart jokes  ). I was pretty disappointed with the aliens' appearance too.

There were some really good lines as usual. I particularly liked the voice in the background during the traffic jam scene: "It's that Ken Livingstone, innit?"

Too bloody right

Persephone - April 16, 2005 07:35 PM (GMT)
My 4 year old loved the 'fart' jokes, had him in stitches everytime

Twas okay, but yep, the weakest ep so far, though loved the crash sequence at the beginning, and felt so sorry for Rose's Mom :)

Outta Sight - April 16, 2005 07:40 PM (GMT)
Ditto  There've been no bad epsiodes so far and this didn't disappoint either. There were quite a few funnies but my mind's gone blank and I can't recall them at the moment but I remember chuckling to myself when I heard them  Nice to spot the familiar faces, Penelope Wilton as one and the one from Cutting It (can't be bothered to look up her name, sorry  )

I do love CE as The Doctor but I'm getting ever so slightly irritated by his constant grin and "fantastic"'s

Also, that girl who played the real Doctor - wasn`t that Saffy`s friend from AbFab ?

I haven`t been disappointed by an ep. yet - they`ve all had good moments, even if bits of it tonight were a little silly ( unless you`re 4 ). :)

goth willow fan - April 16, 2005 08:03 PM (GMT)
I enjoyed this ep as per usual :)

But, those aliens! Men in rubber suits or what! And it looks like it's all being set up for Rose to bail out the Doctor again

ant - April 16, 2005 08:56 PM (GMT)
I liked that episode, the aliens looked a bit pants but next weeks episode looks fantastic!

Phillip Culley - April 16, 2005 09:17 PM (GMT)
Pah - best episode yet :)

Would have got a 5 out of 5, were it not for the tedious fart jokes.

Yes it was, I recognised her straight away too. :)

Quite a good episode I thought, even though the storyline seems rather too familiar to me, even down to the aliens farting all the time. I can't quite remember where I've seen something like that before though.

That woman/alien who was supposed to the the head of MI5 has always bugged me though, ever since she was in some kids programme years and years ago playing a very annoying character. I can't remember what that was called either.

To the cute little piggy :tear: Why did that soldier have to be soooo mean? :tear: :tear:

The Slaveen, OK, they may have been a mistake. They tried too hard to make them look cute, and then the claws popped out :fear: I can imagine kids around the country sitting and thinking, "Aw they're cute mummy. Ah, Mummy. MUMMMY they've got big claws now!!" and scurrying off behind the sofa.

The fart gags getting tedious? How can that be? Fart jokes are perenial and eternal, except when the doc lets one off and laughs (he can be so straight some times :snooty: )

All in all, a good episode, but severely let down by the fact that the cliffhangers were let down by the (far too) revealing trailer for next weeks ep. <_<

Im_Here - April 17, 2005 10:32 AM (GMT)
this weeks episode was ok, found it quite interesting but the slitheen farting (why?). im glad doctor who is still doing two part stories as thats a great way to keep the story line at a steady speed and not wrap it up too quickly!

Yeah the trailer was a biiiig mistake I thought - You've just left most of your cast in great peril, so yeah lets immediately show them all running about fit an healthy in next weeks ep.

Just peeked at IMDB.com - that was Annette Badland - been in lots of things, but maybe you`re thinking of ` the Worst Witch ` ? :)

Very surprised by that trailer, too - what was the point of the cliffhanger, then ?! :weird:

I've just looked her up on IMDB as well cause I remember her from some kids programme but I don't think it was Worst Witch for me.

I enjoyed last night's episode not as good as last week's but still good. One of the things I particulary liked was all the stuff about Rose having been away for a year - the missing posters and the boyfriend having been suspected of killing her - it added a nice touch of realism to the show.

I wondered why the aliens didn't just strap on the PM ( sorry couldn't think of another way of putting it ;) ) or a member of the cabinet rather than some obsure MP unless of course it had to be someone quite large for them to get into. And I take it UNIT has featured in Dr Who before ?

I totally agree about the preview spoiling the cliffhanger and about CE grining and ' fantastic' becoming a bit annoying. I actually think Billie is turning out to be one of the best things about the show. :)

Just about the whole of the Jon Pertwee era was based on Earth and featured UNIT

I thought this was a really good episode, especially the opening sequence. One of the things I'd missed was the cliff-hanger ending, which was a fundamental part of Doctor Who. Like everyone else, I didn't see the point of the next week bit so I turned it off and didn't watch it. I also wasn't keen on the flatulent aliens. Along with the belching rubbish bin we're in imminent danger of a new version of "Carry On, Doctor"

I'm actually quite surprised that showed this at election time but it was a laugh to see Andrew Marr appearing.

Hmm, I've just had a look myself and couldn't see anything that vaguely resembled what I was thinking of. It definitly wasn't the worst witch. I think it was a show where she was playing different characters each week. It was pretty awful in general though.

Morrish - April 17, 2005 05:40 PM (GMT)
This was the best one so far. Good traditional Dr.Who cliffhanger, good alien storyline, and the only dissapointing thing was Billies rubbish boyfriends crap acting.

Yes he is terrible isnt he and then in the DR WHO CONFIDENTIAL afterwards he showed that he is really that terrible in real life too :whistling:

Phillip Culley - April 17, 2005 09:20 PM (GMT)
I wasn't as fussed about the next week thing - after all there's no chance they'll kill off the Doctor or Rose, and Rose's mum has been built up too much to bump off, so is anyone really surprised that the next week preview shows them all to be alive?

I always saw the cliffhangers as 'how will they get out of this one?' as opposed to just 'will they survive'?

jamiearmour - April 17, 2005 10:30 PM (GMT)
I have a feeling that in "Parting of the ways" ep 13, they're going to have a helluva cliffhanger for the new viewers. How will the doctor survive being shot????? :fear: :fear: :fear: :fear:

I agree there, Phillip, in much the same way as I used to watch the old Adam West Batman. All good fun though!

The flatulent aliens joke wore thin very quickly, though I must remember the show isn't aimed primarily at me, but at people who would find that kind of thing funny, ie kids! However, there was a lot of good stuff, like the Rose back story, that more than makes up for that.

I didn't like the pig thing at first, but when that was explained away as being a joke on the part of the aliens, and a way of taking the rise out of humanity, I understood the point, and it was actually good fun.

Loved the mock news reporting too... I was wondering if the beeb would get any complaints from traumatised people thinking they were real, having tuned in by accident!

Loved the nod to UNIT. The Pertwee era was the one I grew up with, so the Brigadier was always a big hero of mine. Would be fun to see Nick Courtney get a cameo in the show at some point!

Was surprised they showed it at election time though, although having said that, the May 5th date has been speculated about for months, so they obviously knew exactly what they were doing when the programme was scheduled! Loved Andrew Marr too... very funny! I was surprised they'd killed off the PM though! Seeing an obvious Blair-alike falling out of the cupboard raised an eyebrow!

Still loving it though, lets hope they keep it up through the next 9 episodes too.

Andrew (HM) :yahoo:

Quite right, thats Alistair Campbells job isn't it?

I got the impression that the guy who took over as PM was supposed to be John Prescott. He tends to get saddled with crap jobs (like sorting out the firemans strike), but he is the deputy prime minister, so he would take over in an emergency (and is probably flatulent).

I thought this was a good episode, but the fart jokes were so tedious. Personally I thought the Slitheen looked OK. I liked the eyelids. The CGI ones from next weeks trailer looked pretty convincing as well.

The first Dr Who Season 27 2-parter.

Fab

The stuff with Rose was great, especially where you found out her boyfriend had been blamed for her disappearance. Poor guy, he couldn't exactly tell them where she was could he? They'd have locked him up for sure ;)

That's what's been bugging me. John Prescott, John Reid and Charles Clarke are all aliens wearing someone else's skin.

Thinking about it I always thought Andrew Marr is a bit of an alien. Those arms definately belong to another creature.

Personally, I've always believed Tony Blair was an alien anyway. His makers never quite got the smile right. :fear:

NJS - April 18, 2005 09:19 PM (GMT)
Not really sure on this one - I thought the start was an excellent idea with the fate as it were of past assistants both in terms of what they tell their family and having all the knowledge being addressed very well - especially the idea of her "secret" knowledge being blown out of the watrer (literally).

The rest though moved between comedy and serious very roughly imo - I liked the mention of UNIT but surely they'd know about his changing face - bit of a CPD to get them all together I feel.

Nobody metioned Kurt out of Teachers - bit of a comedown to a bit part on Doctor Who :ph43r:

I also liked "Tek me to your leader" :)

I was just a bit disappointed at this one. I rate it highly, but there are just two things that annoyed me a little:

1. The over-use of the fart gag. It was OK twice, but after that it got a teeny bit irritating

2. The rubber costume Pig. You could tell it was a rubber costume Pig, which was a bit disappointing from the SFX point of view :(

Other than that there were some good bits like the TARDIS getting it wrong again; meaning that Rose had been gone for 12 months instead of 12 hours. Mickey was OK again and had to do some more stunt acting :o

But they didn't need to mention UNIT seeing as though they seem to be a tad redundant at the moment (well; even the Doctor is whilst he's being electrocuted)

I look forward to seeing the full scene with the "Where are you" bit from the Slitheen as shown in the ad for the second episode

Oh; and the episode title is most definately "World War Three" :wox:

OK, it's just World War 3 didn't have an episode number so I assumed that it was episode six when in fact it's the concluding part to Aliens of London, right?

if you think about it Rygel doesn't fart he lets wind. :) I found the farting ridiculous and juvenile which can only please the kids. I agree the aliens looked completely crap. They kind of looked like big fat E.T's with claws and the only time they looked half-decent was when they were CGI. The man in a suit versions were awful.

Generally another terrible episode although I have to say that I like Christopher Eccleston as the doctor but mostly I think the stories are rubbish, most of the actors are terrible and Dr Who needs a kick up the backside and dragged into the new millennium to fulfil any potential. Phew that was a sentence and a half.

Again I agree with everybody else about what is on next week's episode that should definitely be removed from the programme and if they still deem it necessary why not put it on after the end credits?
