Title: Episode 3 - Tipton

As the carnival caravan drives through the town of Tipton, a dusty wind lashes a gaunt group of townspeople carrying a pine coffin --an ominous start.
Things only get bleaker for the carnies as they start the set-up. After Samson sends Jonesy and Ben back to town for provisions, Lyle Donovan, an old sport, pays the carnival a visit. He's become the sheriff after moving here to tend to his sick mother. He tells Samson there will be no carnival in Tipton. He won't allow his people who barely have a "pocket to turn out," to be shook down...

Another great episode. More clues about what Ben is doing there, he sees the Big Farm truck from the photo and learns that there is an old lady living there who may be able to tell him more. She has dreams too and tells Ben he has the gift too, I assume meaning Scudder and that he looks like him. I gather that Scudder the man from Ben's dreams is his father.
She also tells him.

And that the last she heard from Scudder was that he went to Babylon.
Justin the Preacher is also defending his new church and causes the death of another person in his path, a councillor who wants to knock the church down. It seems that Sister Iris is onto him as she realises that he may have possibly caused the death.
At this point the preacher seems convinced that he is doing God's w**k.
The Carnivale can't set up here because the Sherrif doesn't want them ripping people off and yet they do so even more so after Ben is recognised as a healer and they hold a revival. It seems the way he is dressed reminds some of the carnivale folk of Scudder, somehow its all linked.
Sampson seems to ponder on Ben's abilities, can he really heal?
More questions

This is another episode that is so well paced and, again, it's the last few minutes that really grabbed me, when Lyle brings his mother to be healed. I could actually feel my heartbeat speed up at that point, and yet it's not an action sequence. Says something about what good writing can do, I guess :)

Wow. Just wow. I can't believe how good this show is after just 3 episodes!
It's just so intriguing, both the Ben thread and the Father Justin thread. It seems silly wasting time thinking about what links them, when there is just so much to enjoy and take in.
It's deceptive, isn't it. As you watch, it all seems pretty slow paced and low key, but then when you look back at the end of the episode you realise that such a lot has happened.
I thought Battlestar Galactica was the best new show I've seen in the last few years, but even after 3 episodes, Carnivale is fast catching up.
Sod the rentals, I'm going to buy it!

 It really is deceptive, the show really transports you there as a bystander. It makes you feel uncomfortable but not too much so that you don't want to see what happens next.
I can't rate this show highly enough. Shame its never been shown on a more popular channel over here.
 for buying it. The second season should be on DVD this year too. You certainly won't be disappointed, I can guarantee you that you will enjoy every episode
:)
