Title: The Next Book!!!!

jamiearmour - April 5, 2005 06:58 PM (GMT)
Don't worry, you've all got a few days left to finish "Watchers" but we need to think ahead now.

can we have nominations for the next book, nominations will be open till Friday and then we'll have a poll over the weekend, most votes wins and that'll be the book we read next. OK?

I want to throw my suggestion into the ring right now.

It was my first suggestion for the first book, but I love it so much I'm nominating it again.

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.

You'd be hard pressed to find a funnier apocalypse.

Havent even managed to start the first book properly.

Dont mind what we read next though

I haven't even started Watchers yet!

Um, I'm gonna suggest one of the ones I bought recently; I haven't read it yet so I don't know if it's any good or not. The Rule of Four, by Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason - the blurb compares it to the Da Vinci Code (as did the Independent review) and I found it in Waterstones for £3.50.

Thirded  for Good Omens

Recently came across this book, quick plug for it...

Pirouetting on the boundaries between sci-fi, the crime thriller and intertextual whimsy, Jasper Fforde's outrageous The Eyre Affairputs you on the wrong footing even on its dedication page, which proudly announces that the book conforms to Crimean War economy standard.
Fforde's heroine, Thursday Next, lives in a world where time and reality are endlessly mutable--someone has ensured that the Crimean War never ended for example--a world policed by men like her disgraced father, whose name has been edited out of existence. She herself polices text--against men like the Moriarty-like Acheron Styx, whose current scam is to hold the minor characters of Dickens' novels to ransom, entering the manuscript and abducting them for execution and extinction one by one. When that caper goes sour, Styx moves on to the nation's most beloved novel--an oddly truncated version of Jane Eyre--and kidnaps its heroine. The phlegmatic and resourceful Thursday pursues Acheron across the border into a Leninist Wales and further to Mr Rochester's Thornfield Hall, where both books find their climax on the roof amid flames.

The Eyre Affair - first chapter on Amazon.com?

You can read the first chapter here - click excerpt - since the original string seems too long to post, this takes you to the ` look inside the book ` page.

I haven`t read much of it, since I started reading Watchers instead.

maybe Da Vinci Code is the obvious next book seeing as a lot of people on the board have obviously already got it or want to read it?

Trouble is alot of us have read it so recently.

Good Omens sounds fab though. I haven't read that book in at least a couple of years

And the Eyre Affair sounds like it could be interesting too ;)

I'll be putting the poll up tonight, so we'll have till a week on Friday, that'll be the 15th of April, to get all the votes in. The winner will be announced Friday night or Saturday morning, giving us all the weekend to hunt down whichever book it is.

Any questions or objections, let me know, so I can ignore you :whistling:

OK, nominations are closed, now we vote.

And remember, a vote for Good Omens is a good vote :whistling:

Anything else is BAD :ph43r:
