Title: advice for the new DR WHO assistant

Ex-Who companions Nicola Bryant (Peri) and Louise Jameson (Leela) have been giving the benefit of their experience to new companion Billie Piper.

Alongside an extensive profile of the pop-singer turned actress, the two former Who assistants had plenty to say about fans, skimpy costumes, and the huge recognition factor of Who.

"It sounds like a cliché but when you join Doctor Who you are entering an extended family," said Nicola Bryant. "I still attend conventions around the world, and get incredible fan mail."

Louise Jameson also vouched for the fans. "What's really incredible about Doctor Who is how loyal fans are."

On the subject of costumes, Nicola hoped that Billie wouldn't have to put up with quite as much as she had. "My first scene had me in a bikini and I seemed to wear revealling clothing for the rest of the series." Louise agreed: "Leela [was] strong and tough... but I also had to wear a tight leather costume."

Both actresses were clear on how big an impact Doctor Who has had on their lives, with Louise warning that "Billie should be aware of the huge interest. It can take you by surprise."

"But she's probably used to coping with the media by now."

Leela was the original Zena Warrior Princess. I don't know where they intend to pick Billie up from. I can't imagine her wearing a purple suit and trainers for the whole series.

Everything I've read highlights Billie/Rose to be a 'modern-day' companion, so I'd expect the TARDIS to suddenly contain tight clothes and t-shirts that only go down half way :)
