Title: Forever Considered A Failure???
Description: or not?
Craig G - March 25, 2005 02:05 PM (GMT)
was just thinking . . . (which can never be a good thing :) )
seeing as the show was cancelled after a 5 season run, rather than completeing a full run of seasons and ending with the end of the story without cancelation. Unlike buffy which ended without cancelation.
Will this mean that the show will always be considered a failure. Or if not a failure, then a not too popular show?
Or was this always destined to happen, being it a spinoff show rather than an original show?
and in that regards, does that mean that shows such as farscape are a failure also, or does the creation of the mini series get rid of its 'failure' status???
just curious as to how you lot look at the cancelation and what it means for the show?

Personally I don't see Angel as a failure, to me it was better than Buffy. It was a success with the critics and it lasted quite long for a cult show imo.

Just because it didn't last as long as Buffy did, it doesn't mean it's a failure. It lasted five years which is a long time considering it was a spin-off.

You don't get 5 year failures. It doesn't matter that the show was eventually cancelled, the main thing is the length of time it lasted.

I don't consider Angel a failure. I mean it may have only had five seasons, but they were all different and they were all good. The arcs for each season were interesting and I sometimes liked it more than Buffy.

I don't think its the length of time that matters, its the quality of the programme. Obviously that can be affected by the lengt of time the programme runs for, but I think thats the main criteria.
In that respect, no, Angel wasn't a failure.

It's not exactly quality that measures the success or failure of a show, it's simply how many people watch it. There are plenty of not so good shows, and shows of much lower quality than that have been going for years, and they're not failures. I don't see Angel as a failure at all, it was on for 5 years, which shows it was strong enough to get enough viewers to keep it going that long. A lot of shows get cancelled before the end of the first season, so there's no way I'd call 5 years a failure.

ah, maybe 'failure' was too strong a word, maybe i should have used a different word. :)

Totally :p I think you should have stuck with not to popular show :) I mean failure and someone's favorite show in the same sentence :fear:

dont get me wrong. I love angel the series. I thought that some of the shows seasons were better than what buffy had to offer.
i just was curious as to whether it will go down in history as just another cancelled fantasy show. Or will be forever loved by its fans (including me) and in 20 years time people will still love it to pieces :)
but asking this question in an angel message board was always destined for biased answers lol
:D

Very true :p
In answer to your question.. To the non-fans and people who never saw it, it'll just go down as another cancelled fantasy show, but to it's fans it will be forever loved! or at least will be by me. :D Forever's a pretty long time for it to be loved though . To be honest, I can't really see it still being watched in thousands of years, like those greek plays.. but it'll still be watched for as long as its current fans are alive (and not bored of it :whistling:)

A good way to keep the show alive is force your children to watch it,if you already don't

At the end of the day, a TV show is put out there to make money. Obviously there's a desire to tell stories too, but I can't think of any long-running shows that ultimately caused a financial loss to their production company.
Imo, if you're considering whether a show was a success or not, you look at how long it lasted. But if you want to know how good a show was, then you look at the quality.
buffy_fan1 - March 27, 2005 10:01 PM (GMT)
Hi Craig I don't think you can consider any shows that runs for 5 years a failure give that American TV is very cut throat, just look at what happened to Point Pleasant it was meant to be the next big thing and the producers are already planning for it to be cancelled by writing a finale, and Tru Calling before that. Angel was great and had identity of it's own 5 year is a long time in tv I think it did very well.

I think the fact that it was a spin off will forevr mean it will be known as a lesser version of Buffy which is so sad because it was it's own show it stood without Buffy and was very different to Buffy but will always be her little sister.
Think it will always been known more as a spin off than a cancelled show! think people expect spin offs to be cancelled early and expect the main show to do better. It's just the way the cookie crumbles!

Would Angel have lasted if it started now, or after Buffy had finished?
It's just that shows seem to be getting cancelled earlier and earlier...
prophecy girl - April 13, 2005 08:53 AM (GMT)
season five was a failure (blame WB and their idea to have more audience)
