A particularly strong episode this one, helped in large by a fantastic guest performance. I'm not a Kira fan by any stretch of the imagination, but this is undoubtedly one of her better episodes this season. There's a great moral dilemna all the way through the episode, and it's a joy to watch the story unfold. When DS9 did this kind of episode, it did them really, really well, as we'll next see with the episode Duet :)

Now this is more like it. I do like Kira, and not ashamed to admit it, although I seem to be in a minority here :) ! Even better now that Kira seems to be developing a character of her own, rather than just being a hastily constructed Ro Laren substitute.

A great character for Kira to flex her muscles against... Mullibok is terrific. A well written, well acted episode. You can feel for Mullibok, and also feel Kira's frustration, and her conflict of loyalties. I feel Nana Visitor always portrayed Kira's internal wrangles over her terrorist past and ideals, and the realities of life post occupation and war.

And of course, being a sometimes shallow male, nice to see Kira without the jacket!

A part of my not particularly liking Kira stems from the knowledge that the part was originally intended to be Ro Laren. With Ro being a favourite of mine from TNG I was particularly disappointed to not see her transition from the one series to the other. That being said however, even if that weren't the case, I always found Kira to be a little too abrasive.

A good ep this one and one I always enjoy rewatching :)

Mullibok is engaging and well acted and Kira comes across well. Definately one of DS9's strong points this type of episode, generally well written and the moral side of things is sensibly stated rather than being too in your face or patronizing ala Voyager or Enterprise.

(I've always liked Kira as well Andrew :) )

 I've always enjoyed this one and its interesting to see Kira slowly letting go of the past. Her instincts are to side with the farmer but she is slowly coming round.

I like Kira because she is strong and forthwright, possibly because I'm female I like to see strong female roles more and she is one of the strongest written of the Star Trek genre.

Compare her to Jayneway and she is 1000 times more likeable :) Jayneway was incredibly one dimensional whereas Kira grows within the series, and has conflicts with herself. Despite how aggresive she can be she does think about her actions and realises sometimes she is wrong. :)

Very good episode this largely due to the Hollywood veteran Brian Keith who manages to be both lovable and infuriating at the same time.

While I'm no fan of Major Stroppy this is her best episode thus far. Shows how she must leave her past behind and move on. The scene where she torches Mullibok's cottage is particularly revealing. Not so long ago she would have shot anyone else for doing that.

I also enjoyed the Jake/Rom subplot which seemed to turn everything on it's head. Quark outsmatred by his nephew and Rom only buying land at the insistence of a [I]hew-man[B]

I was interested to read in the Companion that Peter Allan Fields felt that Brian Keith's portrayal of Mullibok was too "soft". It's an interesting thought, but I doubt if the episode would have worked so well had we not been able to sympathise with the character. He's certainly stubborn enough, and the end is a nice touch, as he turns away from Kira, betrayed :)

Have to put in a word for the set designers. The look and feel of Mullibok's homestead is nigh on perfect, so well created and lighted, in fact, that at times it's hard to believe it's on a set

I particularly like the speech that Sisko gives to Kira when he beams down, it's very good, very heartfelt. And yes, Avery Brooks is growing on me again :)

I even like the Jake/Nog sub plot in this episode, their confusion over the self-sealing stem bolts and the ultimate conclusion. The look on Quark's face as he works out what's going on is brilliant

This is one of those episodes that I really enjoy when I'm in the right frame of mind, a static character piece that at other times I might find a little slow. This time around I found it totally captivating

a static character piece

I honestly can't think of a series that consistently did it better. B5 did it well at times, with G'kar and Londo more often than not, but ultimately B5's arc-building denied the series the chance to explore it's characters through individual episodes.

It's strange, I remember loathing him when I watched the series for the first time. Now, I'm completely captivated by the character/actor every time I go through the series. The later seasons in particular he's fantastic.

One other thing I picked up on when going through the DVDs, and I don't think we have anywhere specific to talk about the 'extras', but throughout all of the interviews at the end of each season I love the use of stills. I can't think of a one that they've shown that doesn't capture the moment perfectly.

Haven't seen any extras yet but I'll be there soon :)

Forgot to mention Dax telling Kira about Morn

Would I be right in thinking that the name Morn is a play on Norm from Cheers, in that he's always sitting at the bar in Quark's?

Yep Morn is a Homage to Norm
