Stardate: Unknown

Sisko, Bashir, Kira and Kai Opaka become stranded on a planet ravaged by war where the inhabitants can't die and are unable to leave. Kai Opaka is killed and resurrected, only to learn that she can never leave.

An odd one this one. I must admit, I do quite like this, as it's one of the few chances so far to get off the station for a little adventure.

That being said, I was still surprised by the ending, with Opaka unable to leave the moon. She seemed to have been written as a semi-permanent character for the show, yet here, halfway through the first year she seems to have been written out of it.

The story itself was satisfactory. Not one of the season's bests, but equally nowhere near the worst. It ticks over nicely, throwing up a few moral dilemnas, but you feel that the whole episode was really just a vehicle to get Opaka off the show.

Another good one. The basic storyline of a sideways look at warfare is hardly original, being a sci-fi and Trek staple. But the impact on the characters puts this particular look at the subject in the top rank.

I too felt Opaka was destined for more in the show, and I remember being genuinely shocked at her death, and then surprised that a way wasn't found to get her off the planet. I wonder whether this was planned or whether it was felt there would be more opportunities for drama and conflict with a new Kai in place.

Great stuff. I always enjoyed Camille Saviola as the Kai, and of course another opportunity for the O'Brien/Bashir chemistry to get to w**k.

Interesting take on the war that can never end because nobody dies

I remember being quite taken aback when Opaka dies the first time I saw this. I suppose we may get to see the inner workings of the Bajoran faith

Another solid epsiode (imo) :)

Nice to see even at this early stage the darker feel to the series and also nice that they had to leave the Kai behind rather than coming up with some amazing last minute solution as usually happens in Treks other incarnations :)

The good thing is that I could barely remember this episode so all the stuff about Opaka caught me on the hop a bit

That said, as an episode it was neither here nor there for me. The central premise reminds me vaguely of Star Trek's Day of the Dove, inasmuch as having characters coming back to life to continue fighting an ongoing battle :ponder:

Slightly amused by Dax's incomprehension at O'Brien's idea for tracing Sisko and co - I thought she was supposed to be the science whizz

Some pretty woeful acting by Nana (her wailing at Opaka's "death" was quite awful), and by Siddig again, when trying to get his medical kit back, he was trying to be menacing which meant he immediately started to sound like he was playing Ventikar (sp?) again

I liked the end, though, and the fact that there were no easy solutions :)
