Title: 1 X 11
Description: The Nagus

Quark is appointed as ruler of the Ferengi Empire when the Grand Nagus enters into early retirement; however, all is not as it may seem. Meanwhile, Commander Sisko is concerned that Nog is a growing bad influence on Jake, but is delightfully surprised when he learns that the situation isn't exactly as he had thought.

Ferengi Rules of Acquisition:

#1: "Once you have their money, you never give it back."
#6: "Never allow family to stand in the way of opportunity."

I felt sure this was episode 10 ;)

I've always liked this one.

Great episode for Quark and interesting to see a bit of character development for Rom(sp?). Always makes me smile how Rom changes over the seasons.

Nice to see a bit more of Ferengi culture, although it's fairly obvious the Ferengi have been designated as comic relief to a certain extent.

Nice subplot with Jake teaching Nog to read (assuming I've got the right episode). I like how Jake throws the high handed Federation ethics re getting along with/understanding alien cultures back at Sisko :)

Quark in the airlock is priceless :)

I think this is a pretty good episode with a good, detailed look into Ferengi culture. Always good to see Rom have a decent amount to do although thus far they haven't quite decided what path the character should take.

 I missed this one but I have seen it several times before.

Love the Ferengi based episodes, they are funny and Quark is one of my favourite characters. Greedy manipulative and deviod of loyalty - anything for money, it is one of my favourite aspects of DS9.

This is another one that I really didn't care much for to begin with, but has grown on me more and more with each subsequent rewatch.

Wallace Shawn is simply outstanding in the titular role, and is in every subsequent appearance as well. The Ferengi episodes tend to be received in one of two ways, either people love them for the humour and change in pace, or they loathe them with a passion. I've always tended to like them myself. There are a odd few that don't really w**k, Ferengi Love Songs for example, but most, like this are a delight.

Particularly loved the bit where Nog lets slip that he's been taught by a female Human. The Nagus' reaction is literally

I've always felt the Ferengi episodes were a bit of a mixed bag really. Varying from the sublime ('Little Green Men') to the ridiculous ('Profit and Lace'). Having said that, even the bad ones had some measure of respectibility saved by the performances of either Jeff Coombs as Brunt, or Wallace Shawn as the Nagus.

This episode is one of the better Ferengi eps, a good showcase for Quark, and a nice appearance from Zek. Interesting to see how Rom developed during the seven seasons, although it's clear from the earlier eps, that they weren't really sure what to do with him! Good stuff, very entertaining.

I liked the Nog/Jake subplot too, one of the relationships on DS9 that gets overlooked, I think!

I like Jake... he's everything Wes Crusher (at least season 1 and 2 Wes) isn't. A well rounded, likeable character.

Andrew (HM) :upside:

Spot on there Andrew, on both counts.

Jake was the character Wes should have been. Things are also helped by Cirroc Lofton turning in some truly brilliant performances down the years. I must say I've always enjoyed Aron Eisenberg's performances as well, he comes across particularly well in the DVD interviews as well, although he's a little older than I first anticipated

One of DS9's cornerstones in my eyes has always been it's characters, or more appropriately, it's character dynamics. In most cases you can put any one character with another character and get an interesting dynamic. DS9 was truly blessed with it's character writing.

Well, if you count Emissary as Episode 1, Past Prologue as episode 2 and so on, it is episode 10 :)

Did you have a copy of the New Trek Program Guide? From what I remember, that had this listed as episode 10 (going by the reasoning above).

Sadly there's not much more I can say about this episode! :)

Just going back to Cirroc Lofton, we watched The Visitor earlier, and although Tony Todd usually gets credited with some truly outstanding w**k in the episode, Lofton's performance shouldn't be overlooked either.

An interesting parallel when Jake's left on the station when Sisko disappears. Move forward 3 and a half years and he's left in the same situation after the finale.

I love this episode!

It always starts me laughing, from the moment Zek starts cackling at the beginning

Great episode for Quark. The scene when he's walking through the Promenade looking all regal is hilarious, especially when he realises being Nagus might not be all it's cracked up to be

Love Rom in this episode too, from the way he passes his punishment on to Nog to him having the lobes to plot against Quark

And - shock horror - I actually enjoyed the Jake/Nog storyline in this episode, it was quite touching when Sisko went to find them and found Jake teaching Nog to read :)

Slightly confused about O'Brien taking the class though, as I'm sure it had been said previously that there was no school while Keiko was away

Final word for Wallace Shawn, though. The guy cracks me up. Loved him in The Princess Bride, and he's absolutely priceless here

I'm sure I've mentioned this elsewhere, but again, DS9 made the Ferengi. Sure TNG introduced them, but beyond that first season they were more often than not just wheeled out when everyone else had already been used. DS9 took the species and added another two dimensions to them. If you look down the series, you've got Quark, Rom, Nog, Brunt, Moogi, Zek, they're all brilliantly realised characters! I think Zek is perfect as a character, he's almost comic relief personified, that laugh!

Bit confused about the O'Brien sub teacher bit as well. Aren't they still complaining at this point that things keep going wrong on the station? Why would you then have your most valuable resource unavailable, instead teaching brats? And why would O'Brien do it anyway? Is he teaching them engineering/mechanics??????

The laugh's worth the price of entry on its own

Forgot to mention the bit where he tells Quark he's going to buy the bar off him, the look on Quark's face and then Zek starts cackling - brilliant

Not sure about O'Brien. Maybe he's teaching them to look permanently vaguely pissed off and ruddy faced :ponder:

They're school children being taught by keikole O'Brien. Shouldn't they have that look down by now?

willowroolz - August 1, 2006 01:26 PM (GMT)
:ponder: Good point

Aw, poor Keiko. I'd do her. After Lursa, of course :snooty:

Or was it Betor? :ph43r:
