When Quark is caught cheating from an alien delegation from the Gamma Quadrant, they exact revenge by turning the senior crew into the playing pieces of a game of life and death. Only Quark can save their lives.

Hmmmmm
This one's usually lambasted from all quarters, but I have to say I've never disliked it that much. It's nowhere near the best of the season, and isn't really anything other than average, but many people quote it as the worst episode of the season. I can't justify giving it that tag, especially whilst you have episodes like The Passenger and If Wishes Were Horses around
The tone I found quite reminscent of many TOS episodes.
It's a Quark vehicle primarily, and works as such, as he gets rumbled cheating the GQ visitors. Again though, the GQ race has unknown and exotic technology at their disposal. Those GQ types appear to be quite ominious
Some of the tests that face the group of characters in the game itself are creative, others are cringeworthy at times.
At the end of the day though, not as bad as people make out, but still far from brilliant.

Can't really see how people can rate this as worse than 'If Wishes Were Horses'
I've always found this to be quite enjoyable. Nothing too significant happens but the Quark scenes are fun, particularly the grovelling

Another one where the episode's reputation isn't really justified. It's ok though. A good opportunity to see more of Quark again, giving Armin a chance to further flesh out the character.
I like James's point that it's very TOS in tone, I hadn't seen that before, and yes, it is. A slightly substandard 'Shore Leave' perhaps, where things aren't quite what they seem. And the GQ doesn't actually seem to be that friendly a place. Who knows what nastiness lurks out there? ;)

I used to hate this episode. I mean, can you see Picard or Kirk playing hopscotch ;)
It is growing on me thought, largely through Quark grovelling and then, as the game takes him over, he stops playing the safe route.
Now, I'm not one of those who study every scene lookin for flaws in continuity and the like but one thing did occur to me. When the Wadi arrive on DS9 they want to be taken to Quarks, mentioning it by name. Now, since the Wadi are the first visitors from the Gamma Quadrant, how did they know it was called Quarks?

I don't care what anyone else says - I love this episode :)
The whole attitude of the Wadi is wonderful - everyone gets dressed up to welcome them (although why is Sisko getting worried about First Contact when Vulcans did it 3 weeks ago?), and all they do is turn up, say hello and ask for Quark's  Then at the end, they teach Quark his lesson, and then pack up and bugger off before anyone gets to do anything!
Then there's the infamous Chandra/Allamaraine sequence - I love Sisko's face as he realises just what levels he will have to stoop to in order to get out of the game :)

That was funny. I found Kira's hopscotch across the screen hilarious too, the look on her face was priceless
Not a bad episode. James is spot on with the Star Trek comparison. I'm not quite sure how Quark made the leap from Sisko, Dax, Kira and Bashir going missing to them being his pieces in the game, but there you go
I also like the fact that everyone (including the viewer) thinks they're in so much danger when really they weren't at all
Not bad, not brilliant, but still fairly solid for such an early stage :)

All this DS9 stuff is making me want to watch it again
Might just be some of the dross from TNG I've watched lately though

That's what I've been saying about how solid these eps are for so early in the series, in comparison to other series I like, TNG being one of them :)
