Anyone else a Terry Pratchett fan?

I'm a Pratchett fan. As sure as the world travels through space on the back of 4 enormous elephants that stand on the back of the great World Turtle A'Tuin.
Uhm, I could have just said yes, couldn't I?
I've not had any sleep you see.

Gah! I don't think I can pick a favourite, my favourites are Mort, The Fifth Elephant, Thief of Time, Good Omens and The Science of The Discworld.

For me, anything with Carrot, Vimes and co in it

Any of the City Watch books.

I read, some time ago, that the director Terry Gilliam was thinking of making a film version of Good Omens, which annoyed me because it's the first book I was going to make a film of when I became a film director. ( I can dream! ) Just thinking about turning the story into a film script though gives me a headache. It's not as easy as it might seem, you would practically have to rewrite the story for the medium of film, inspite of the fact that it's very visual and film worthy to begin with.

I like what I've read very much, I just havent got around to reading any more yet. I want to though. In fact, when I've finished what's currently in my "to be read" pile, I think I'll start at the beginning of the Discworld series and read all of them. What's the first one called?

Its called The Colour Of Magic.

Thanks. I think I might have read that one actually...can't really remember. I won't mind reading it again, anyway, so it doesn't really matter :)

The first 2 are OK but he really hit his stride with the 3rd one, Equal Rites.

Ooh would definitely agree. The first Discworld book I read was actually Mort, followed by Equal Rites (naughty, naughty not reading in order ), but I think if I had actually started at the beginning and read them in the right order I wouldn't have gotten into them so much.
melian - March 18, 2005 09:37 AM (GMT)
I made that mistake. The first book I read was Equal Rights, but when I was persuading my dad to read the discworld books I gave him The Colour of Magic. Big mistake. Huge! He didn't even want to bother with any of them after that :(

Yeah, the first one I read was Mort, which I loved. I don't remember which ones are the other 2 I've read, but if I had started with either of them I probably wouldn't have bothered reading any more (as is evident by the oh so lasting impresssion they obviously made on me ;) )

I started with The colour of magic and The light fantastic. I liked them at the time, but it I suppose it did take a while for me to read any more of them. I kept umming and ahhing about buying Equal Rites, but in the end didn't. I borrowed some later ones from the library a year or so later (around Reaper man, Moving Pictures), and that's what got me back into them, and I quickly acquired them all so I could read in order. :)

The first one I read was that free one which got given away with SFX magazine - can`t remember what it was called, but it was one of those Tibetan type ones - anyone remember what it was called ?! :D
Anyway, it got me into the series.....

I think it was later than those - I shall stop being lazy and look on Amazon for it !
It was one of those books with the suitcase with legs, I think. Anyhow, it converted me to the Discworld side !

If you were helpless with laughter over Shanghai Noon, enjoy satirical British humor and terrible puns, or just need your Pratchett fix, grab this book. Unfamiliar with Terry Pratchett and his Discworld series? It's time to discover one of the funniest, most literate, and most thought-provoking authors writing today. The Monks of History live in a Tibetan sort of area known as "enlightenment country." Their job: "to see that tomorrow happens at all." A mysterious Lady wants time-obsessed Jeremy Clockson to build a totally accurate glass clock. It will trap time and stop it, eliminating humanity's irritating unpredictability. This would make the Auditors, who observe the universe and enforce the rules governing it, very happy. It would also put Death out of a job, which the Grim Reaper isn't happy about. Fortunately, the History Monks have encountered this situation before; in fact, Lu Tze, the Sweeper, has personally dealt with it before. Even better, he has a new, gifted apprentice, Lobsang Ludd, the "thief of time." This time, they'll stop trouble before it can start! To add chaos to the mix, there's the Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse--the one who quit before they became famous.

 You know I even put that one on my suggestion list but then deleted it thinking "It wouldn't be that one, it's too recent".

Yup, I`m a recent convert ! I rapidly went from ` What on earth is all this Discworld nonsense ` to ` Terry Pratchett is our leader !`
