ken1701e - April 2, 2005 06:49 PM (GMT)
What an outstanding episode!!!!!
Not just the episode itself but the revelations found within it!!!!
THE DOCTOR IS THE LAST OF HIS RACE!!!!!
GALIFRY HAS BEEN DESTROYED!!!!!!
what happened? Who was the war against? Will we ever find out?
Not sure about the bicycle pump on the tardis control panel though?
Back to the episode itself, excellent special effects, good story line and well acted - what more could you want.
Now i will sit back and wait for the negative comments ( :whistling: )

Not knowing the ins and outs of Dr Who- was all that stuff about his race. and his planet generally known or was it new and stuff then? That bit with him and Rose at the end surprisingly moving. And it explains why the Doctor has people come along with him.
It was OK, with some very good bits. If I was a kid that bit with the last human expolding would have disturbed me no end. But I'm hoping a no holds barred fantastic episode comes along before long.

Me, too - especially the bit where the Doctor does his little party dance to ` Tainted Love ` :D

we know lots of things about the doc. Those of us that remember the series know all about his planet etc, what we didnt know was the bit about it being destroyed and him being the last of his race - what the hell has happened there???
jamiearmour - April 2, 2005 07:30 PM (GMT)
I Loved this episode
But you knew I was going to say that didn't you? :whistling:
So the Doctor is the last Timelord? Well that puts that bit of continuity in the not needed pile don't it?
But who were they fighting? How could they lose? Didn't they see it coming?
I have my theories, but I won't post them yet. I want to get more clues before I commit myself :shifty:
But overall the ep was
Spectacular
ken1701e - April 2, 2005 07:31 PM (GMT)
maybe the answers will be in the CHRISTMAS SPECIAL.
it would make sense for that to show some of it and also the regeneration into C.E. and also the next one.

I've just read elsewhere on the net that apparently it has been mentioned in a Dr Who book- The Eight Doctor books? Can't tell you anymore than that because thats all I know.

A very good episode and cannot fault it at all!
The fact they disclosed that the Dr was the last of his species has given food for thought.Who were they at war with and for what reason???
More please!

Without saying more to avoid spoilers, this probably refers to the book The Ancestor Cell.
However, it's probably not the best of ideas to jump into this book, as it ends a story arc that has been going for several books before it :)

Hmm. I've just read a bit more- and with saying anymore myself just in case it turns out to be a spoiler, that would be an interesting aspect of the Doctors character.
Do we think this is picked up from some old books or is it just a co-incidence? I can't imagine that Star Trek or Buffy or anything would take a major plot point from a book spin off.
ken1701e - April 2, 2005 08:03 PM (GMT)
I would seriously doubt they have taken this story line from one of the books. It would be a first if they have.
No i think it is something completly new that they have got up their sleeve to reveal later maybe in the season finale or the christmas special but also I think he may find a way to save Galifrey after all.
If the books are important however then maybe this one coming out in june might be the most important in years

Different in tone (and scope) from last week's episode. For all the "the FX are duff" crowd, this one's a nice little repost, they were spectacular throughout.
Like others, I enjoyed this one immensely. The revelations don't mean a great deal to me continuity-wise, but it certainly adds something to the new series. I'm sure more will be divulged as the series goes along.
And, next week's episode looks like a cracker as well
Steve - April 3, 2005 08:55 AM (GMT)
I think the humour in the new series is about the right balance and found the ipod bit quite funny!
Still not as goood as their 'classic' songs-Tainted love & Toxic!!! :p :p :p
willowroolz - April 3, 2005 09:50 AM (GMT)
Really enjoyed it. Great special effects throughout and the story was good too. The ending was very good, although I have to say I miss the cliffhangers. :)
Did anyone else watch it thinking "this Eccleston bloke ain't that good, they can do better"?
Bakhesh - April 3, 2005 12:09 PM (GMT)
Actually no. I thought he was very good, despite him being well and truly in my bad books at the moment. Makes him quitting all the more annoying.
I didn't see last weeks (I know, I'm the only person in the country to miss it). I have to say though, I was very impressed with this ep. SFX were great. Eccleston and Billie were both very good. It was humourous without being silly, and felt fairly dramatic in places. I loved it when Billie was about to get fried by the sun, and was screaming to be let out, and the doctor said "Two ticks!".
Its a shame that it was all done in 45 minutes though. There was loads of good stuff that they skimmed over. I wish they'd spent more time with the repeated mean thingy, or the face of whatsit. Could easily have been padded out over two episodes.
Crichton Kicks - April 3, 2005 03:01 PM (GMT)
The early numbers are still looking ok;
| QUOTE |
Dr Who - 7.27 million audience 36.05 % share Saturday Night Takeaway - 6.02 million audience 30.86 % share
|
A drop-off, but every show loses some of the audience from it's first episode. Importantly it still beat it's ITV competition, and with And & Dec finishing soon Dr Who should find itself up against lighter opposition.

I was joking. As I said in the Rose thread, he is very good ;)
Sadly, the knowledge that he won't be around for very long made it seem to me like there was a clock ticking during the episode, in more ways than one. :(
Crichton Kicks - April 3, 2005 03:26 PM (GMT)
Apparently they suspected he might not be around for that long and wrote the season accordingly.

Just watched this on BBC3 - quite good but I have doubts about the self-contained story per episode format - I used to like the cheesy cliffhangers.
Good use of humour again "Off to speak to Michael Jackson" being the highlight :)

Doesn't the series break into a number of 2/3 parters after the first few episodes though ??

Don't know the details - I'm taking it as it comes.
Forgot to mention did anyone else think SG-1 replicators? :)

Not quite - of the 11 remaining episodes there are 2 2-part stories; the other 7 are standalone :)

Yeah, in "Confidential" afterwards the guys from "The Mill" were saying how many effects were in that episode, "more than in Gladiator" apparently. I wonder why they keep mentioning Gladiator when they talk about their w**k? :whistling:
Why don't they just say "We worked on Gladiator, and this stuff is harder!" and get it over with

Loved it, more than 'Rose,' I think. In 'Rose' there were one or two points where I thought 'hmmmm' in an unsure way, such as the belching wheelie bin, but this week, I thought there was a good balance between the humour and the serious... and I loved the 'ipod' crack too. Very funny!
Effects were great, and the guest 'aliens' were a mixture of excellent (Cassandra, the face, and the strange looking blue slug thing), and also slightly camp like the blue steward... Doctor Who without a touch of campness is just unthinkable!
The wee spider things were excellent too.
Already desperate for the next episode. That looks fun too!

It had a little less impact than Rose, but I enjoyed it. It beat Star Trek's teleport special effect
There were some great lines and I liked when Cassandra exploded at the end. I'm sure The Mill were very happy to do that after some pretty difficult animation with her beforehand!

My comiserations Laura :(
I thought it was great, even better than last weeks
It was nicely done the way you saw Rose suddenly realise that she was not in Kansas anymore :D and even better when she then thought about the fact that she had, for all intents and purposes, run off with a stranger :lmao:
The Dr was really sweet, doing a bit of 'jiggery pokery' with her phone so she could call her mum :D
I must admit that, although the fact that she can't talk properly drives me insane, I am enjoying the easy banter between Rose and the Dr, right from the start they really seemed to hit it off

Fangy and grrr - April 4, 2005 06:49 PM (GMT)
I thought this weeks episode was ok but not as good as last weeks. The strenght's of the series so far for me are the characters of the Doctor and Rose. I like their relationship and I liked that we got some character development from the both of them with Rose realising the enormity of what she'd done in agreeing to come with the Doctor and the Doctor revealing a bit of himself and his story. It's also funny. It has a very nice understated humour to it. :)
The weaknesses so far imo are the actual plot's or stories. The're very simplistic and what plot there is they rush through. It really needs a more juicy and complex story for the show to take off for me.
That said next week's episode looks good.
