Miles O'Brien unknowingly triggers a Cardassian booby trap that releases a potentially fatal virus throughout the station. This Aphasia virus results in the crew only being able to speak in gibberish, before inducing a coma in the victim.

Another character comes into focus a little more with this one, Dr Bashir.

Again, peripheral for most of the time so far, with just the odd glimpse, but the young Doctor proves his worth here, as the virus takes hold of the entire station.

So far the Doctor's seemed a little foppish, and despite his excitement at being there, appears to be completely out of his depth at times.

I always liked Alex Siddig's performances on DS9 I must admit. He forms workable dynamics with both Andy Robinson (Garak) and Colm Meaney (O'Brien) quite easily, and it's essentially the lack of that kind of dynamic that have made Voyager, and Enterprise such a disappointment for me on a character level.

The story itself, again, is solid. Never anything more than that, but it gets the job done, it gives the Doctor some good exposure and furthers the 'Cardassians are the enemy' storyline a little.

Was never quite sure about this as an ep. As James said, it's solid. It's also fun, but for me, it doesn't quite make the grade.

Totally agree about the Bashir/O'Brien and Bashir/Garak dynamics. I felt Alexander Siddig did an excellent job on DS9, loved the way Bashir developed. It would be great to think that we could see more of the good doctor at some point in the future, though I suspect we've seen the last of him.

The highlight of this episode for me was the dialogue. Who could fail to smile at lines like 'She's flowery units about the lad herslf' for example! Makes more sense than some of Braga's technobabble anyway.

I've always liked this one :)

Good performances from most of the cast and Julians character is developed further. Liked the interplay between Quark and Odo, which even at this early stage is an important part of the show (for me anyway).

The bajoran doctor coming up with the antidote so quickly seemed a bit daft but other than that very little wrong with the episode.

What makes this episode w**k for me is that the actors manage to talk absolute rubbish and yet imbue it with all the feeling they would if they were making sense. Colm Meaney does it particularly well

I like the fact that they immediately jump to the conclusion that the device was left behind by the Cardassians (or at least Kira says that) but then learn otherwise.

As Dave says, the final solution is very quick and a bit convenient. I would've liked to have seen Bashir solve the problem. After all, it's established that although they may be talking complete bollocks their thought processes are unaffected, so surely he could've continued wo.rking on the antedote

As favourite bits so far go, though, the sight of Quark running operations is just priceless. Or not, in this case

My favourite bit from this one is where Sisko walks in to triage and finds Quark talking gibberish, only to then find that he's fine, he's just trying to get money out of those owing him

Maybe, but he would be completely unable to issue instructions to an assistant or to the computer and in any case could not interpret what the computer was displaying (there was a shot of the computer screen which showed complete gibberish after he was affected whereas before it was readable).

Also the point was made that he was well on the way to finding a cure and the Bajoran Doctor just had to complete the research.

Made you look, though, didn't I?

What does a whizz kid like Bashir need an assistant for anyway?
