Title: Book 1: Watchers By Dean Koontz
jamiearmour - March 8, 2005 11:15 PM (GMT)
OK I'm starting the thread early, but I also want to repeat the ground rules.......
If you are going to post about a plot point or event please mark spoilers with chapter and or page numbers. I want the spoilers to be BBC Buffy board size, so no one will be in any doubt. In fact I want the warnings to be clear enough for Lisa's unborn child to know that there are spoilers in your post
We'll be starting on Monday, if you have difficulty getting a hold of the book before then, join in when you can.
I hope 4 weeks will be enough time for everyone to have read the book, if you're having problems let us know and you'll get more time (I'm very flexible)
Above all else, enjoy the book. Don't feel that it's a race. Read it at your own pace, it's a leisure pursuit for heavens sake.
So go forth and enjoy yourselves :D
jamiearmour - March 13, 2005 11:39 PM (GMT)
Righty ho boys 'n' girls. Time to start reading the book  Haven't read this particular Koontz peice in a while, so I'm hoping it's as good as I remember.
For all of you who're reading it for the first time.........
Have fun :fear: :fear: :fear: :fear: :fear:

Just a thought, but it may be better to identify spoilers by Part and Chapter number than by page number as we may not all be reading the same version ;)

:( Still waiting for my copy to be delivered ...
jamiearmour - March 14, 2005 01:41 PM (GMT)
Don't worry little Pixie, just start when you're ready. there's no great rush. You're reading the book for fun. That goes for everyone here, read it, enjoy it, then lets talk about it

Right - that's that one finished (so I started it last week, and I get a few hours reading time travelling into and out of w**k :)).
Will post comments and thoughts later...

I went down to the library today to get this, but they didn't have it, so I think I shall have to buy it instead!

Good advice, I'll have a look round the charity shops near me, and if they don't have it I'll check out WHSmith. I don't mind paying full price, but only if I have to ;)

Well, tonight, both before and after a shortish trip to the pub, I sat down to continue reading Watchers and finished it.
Not sure whether I'm supposed to put my thoughts down in this thread or not, so I'll leave off for now, but I'll just say it was very easy to read and I liked it a lot. :D
And yes, perhaps I'd better go to bed soon. Thankfully no w**k in the morning though...

"I am my thoughts" - March 23, 2005 12:15 AM (GMT)
I've read it before, but will read again to refresh my memory :D
melian - March 23, 2005 12:49 PM (GMT)
Is anybody ready to talk about it yet? Maybe just about the first few chapters?
little pixie - March 23, 2005 03:37 PM (GMT)
 Ooh, `real life` has intervened , shall be good and go and read some more chapters this evening - have enjoyed it so far, though !
( Er, ` real life` and planning my Tv watching schedule for April ;) )
NJS - March 24, 2005 08:57 PM (GMT)
I've decided to re-read this and have got about a third of the way through in 2 nights - it goes down easily due to familiarity.
SPOILERS TO ABOUT PAGE 200 TO FOLLOW
Every time I read this book I feel more for The Outsider. I've just reached the bit where we are first given a few details about him and the bit that always gets me at this stage is "Cut my own eyes out so won't see how people look at me" :tear:
As I said in the other thread I also have a problem in that no matter how many times I read it I still see Einstein as a labrador rather than a retriever - I don't know why - I've never owned a pet or anything but it just feels more "right" the way I imagine him.
Hovis - March 29, 2005 12:35 PM (GMT)
Onto chapter 7 now, so I'm past half way. Really enjoying so far. My first taste of Dean Koontz, and I doubt it will be my last!
Trouble is, I'm at w**k right now, and eager to pick it up again. (Just read a few pages at the tail end of my lunch break. Really must do some w**k!

SPOILERS ( sort of ) up to Chapter 7
Halfway through Chapter 7, really enjoying it ! Like the way that the experiences of the ` mutants ` and the people are being paralleled .
jamiearmour - April 4, 2005 11:21 AM (GMT)
Well, there's one week left people, anyone scared witless yet? :fear: (except me that is :fear: :fear: )
I love this book, I've always been a fan of Koontz's w**k, Hideaway is my favourite of his, but I love this one too
I'm on chapter 11 at the mo' the tension is mounting  :fear: I'm afraid to turn a page (aarrggh) just kidding  Hope everyone else is enjoying it.

This one, Phantoms, Strangers, and now From the Corner of his Eye are my Dean Koontz faves.
If you like this one and want to find out more about DK's back catalogue you may find this site,
Dean Koontz's Official Site, useful.
Oh, and there are some lovely treats for all you dog lovers out there, messages from DK's dog Trixie :lmao: They are hilarious
Michelle - April 4, 2005 06:40 PM (GMT)
I should probably make some notes about it before I have to take the book back to the library this weekend. :)

I just love the start of this book. The way DK describe's Travis's mood and his plan to recapture his youth. That first scene with Einstein is quite terrifying as he stops Travis from moving down the path, and as they flee from The Outsiders unseen presence. I love Travis's confusion and exasperation with Einstein as he gradually reveals his true intelligence, and then the way you are introduced to Nora and find out her history. The way Einstein brings her and Travis together is heartwarming (if a little cutesy :D ). I'm a sucker for doggie stories
