The Ultimate Guide to FileSharingLast Updated: May 29, 2004Article Introduction:Since this is a board of Cult T.V., it's only natural to talk about filesharing. It makes everything easier, and in many cases is the only method watching our favorite shows. Please recognize that this is in no way complete and if anyone has anything to add, pease do.
Well, when I hear filesharing, I immediately think of Napster and the good old days.
The fact of the matter is, Napster is no way to get anything, no matter how legal they say it is. Well, with the demise of Napster came many clones, tools and even entirely different internet protocols that are far more capable and more secure.
Summary of article:FastTrack [KaZaa, K-Lite, ect.]

=================================================================
FastTrackSummary:This is the most common filesharing network of all time and has roots that lead to Napster, but is pure Peer-to-Peer and doesn't go through a server to work like Napster did. This means it can never be shut down. You would have to shut down the internet. You search for files through your client, but you can also have verified files posted on websites special hyperlinks (sig2dat://) or magnet links (version 2.6 and above).
Method of Download:It downloads a file from beginning to end and until it is finished, the data is saved as a .dat file. The file cannot be shared on the FastTrack network until the file is complete.
Notes:This is the network is losing popularity fast as it has many fake or bogus files as people name files incorectly, is a great way to spread viruses, and is watched by the R.I.A.A. and other "anti-piracy" groups more than other networks. This doesn't mean it has lost all of it's integrity. If you have the right client, and know how to search, it can still be a great way to get files.
Clients:KaZaa Media Desktop <---a client litterally filled with spyware. You can supposedly get a "clean version" by paying Sharman Networks (the creators of KMD)
K-Lite K++ 2.4.3 <---a great client with the spyware stripped and many extra capabilities added for security, stabilty and much more. This client is illegal.
K-Lite 2.6 <---This is still under development and is legal, but you have to get two files from the KMD (which is easy to do). This is being made to eliminate connection issues Sharman created by making it so older clients wouldn't be able to connect to the FastTrack Network. Although Sharman failed miserably, the new version of K-Lite has many options the original KMD 2.6 doesn't have, and it has a few interesting features K-Lite 2.4.3 doesn't have.
There are other K-Lite clients based on K-Lite 2.4.3, which are really just versions that comes with tools that are more up to date. There are also other clients to connect to the FastTrack network, but the ones listed are the main ones.

BitTorrentSummary:A completely legal internet protocol. All it's clients and tools are legal as well. It was devised to save bandwidth in the distribution of large files and became incredibly popular neing used in distrubution of anime, but now anything can be found through torrent downloads. It is also a great way to distribute Linux CDs. It's method of download qualifies it as a file-swarming protocol as opposed to a file-swapping protocol. Any questions may be answere by viewing
Brian's BitTorrent FAQ and Guide.
Method of Download:A file or files is downloaded in random fragments from whomever you connect to and once you have a piece, it is shared with everyone else downloading the file(s). Since files don't have to wait for completion to be shared, it is a file-swarming protocol, instead of a file-swapping protocol, which must wait for the download to finsh before it is shared. A download is started by executing a torrent file usually by clicking on a hyperlink on torrent websites, but there are torrent searching programs that give the user greater control. All torrents aare maintained by a tracker to make sure downloaders find eachother. Download speeds always get faster the longer the files is being downloaded.

IRCSummary:IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, and is quite possibly the original FileSharing network. IRC is mostly used for chatting, but is also a great ay for downloading files. It started with Unix, and is a command-line tool to chat and download files. Don't know what Unix is? Well, it's an operating system with thiry years behind it. That alone says a lot. I believe IRC started in 1988 itself, but that's still older than any other peer-to-peer has ever lasted. IRC is always the network to get files first, and like BitTorrent, the network and clients are perfectly legal. Not recommended for newbies.
Method of Download:It downloads from beginning to end, and seems to have the highest speed out of any network. You can definately reach your maximum possible download speed with IRC. Downloads can be started by visiting an IRC search engine site to log you into the proper IRC channel where you can request the files you want using the proper commandline switches. Files aren't shared Peer-to-Peer. Programs, known as bots handle the distribution of files and they respond to the download requests, so it can be referred to as leeching, but that's the way IRC works.
Clients:mIRC <---not free
mIRC (old versions) <---the older versions are free
OMEN mIRC Scripts <---Not a client, but adds functions to mIRC
There are more clients, add-ons, and scripts for mIRC, but I don't use it much. They can be found by doing a bit of searching.

Other Means of FilesharingThere are other networks out there like:Newsgroups
LimeWire
DC++ (Direct Connect Protocol)Ares (use the lite edition and uncheck "NavHelper" to NOT install the spyware it's packaged with)
SoulSeekMute <---Aimed at greater security and annonimity
Ants P2P <---Aimed at greater security and annonimity
and many many more. It would take much too much time to get into all of them, but if anyone has anything to add, they can.
Multi-network tools:Shareaza is a multiple network client that can use download files from the EDonkey2000, Gnutella, BitTorrent and Gnutella2 (G2) Networks.
KCeasy supports the FastTrack, Gnutella, and OpenFT networks (version 0.11 was the last version that connects to the FastTrack network)
There are other tools like this, many for Linux/Unix, but I don't know of too many.

How to Play What You've DownloadedThere are two key things in watching files downloaded through P2P. You need the right codec and a capable player.
What is a codec? It stands for "compressor decompressor." EVERY video file you will find is compressed using some codec. Pure uncompressed video is about a Gigabyte per minute, so it's neccesary. Having the proper codecs installed on your system will make sure you system "understands" how to display the compressed video. When a codec is installed, it is system wide. It will work in any player that can handle that file type. Install as many codecs as you like. The more you have, the less chance you have of having an unwatchable file. Just don't install different versions of the same thing on top of each other.
Recommendations:I have both on my system. If anything goes wrong, I have something to fall back on.
VideoLAN is a player with all it's own codecs, so you install it and it should be able to play almost anything on it's own. A new version was released on May 21, 2004.
The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack has all you need to watch pretty much anything. It has codecs and capable players, one of which is Media Player Classic, which is a great player.
Winamp is excellent for audio. It can even be used for streaming video, but I would recommend the above player for video. ;)
Players That Suck:These are players that are just plain bad. And with the above links, you won't ever need them again.
Real Player
Quicktime
Windows Media Player

SecurityBefore you use any Peer-to-Peer application, you need to take care of basic system security. Everyone should have a firewall (whether it be software or hardware) or a router, an anti-virus, and some means to remove and prevent spyware.

Peer-to-Peer Software to Avoid at All Costs!!These are spyware filled programs and should be avoided because there is always a free, and spyware-less version that works better.

*=This was actually an accident on suprnova.org. There used to be a pop-up that advertised "The Original BitTorrent Client" that was actually a fake filled with spyware and the creators of Suprnova.org got rid of it
How likely are you to be sued by a company like the R.I.A.A.?The truth is, not much at all. The chances are literally one in a million. Most people got letters and didn't get sued, but they were only people who were doing MASSIVE downloading of songs without protection and were doing what would be considered illegal, but if I were to get into specifics, the R.I.A.A. could be proved wrong. It's just that people are afraid of them. You may not be doing anything illegal depending on where you are.
How legal is it?That all depends. If you're using K-Lite 2.4.3, that is illegal because it's giving away copywritten software. You can avoid this by using the completely legal BitTorrent or many others. After that it all depends on what you use it for. If you're downloading say a movie ripped from t.v., wouldn't that be legal? It was freely on t.v. It all just depends on common sense more than anything. Just use your head.

Keep in mind, this is only a summary. Each FileSharing application and protocol have their own unique way of working and if you run into a problem, it can be answered by doing a little searching. The lists may have duplications and/or broken links. As stated below, I used lists posted on the FileSharingTalk forum.
Guide initially compiled by Xero Grid with much information gathered from the
FileSharingTalk Forum using lists from junkyardking, thisiswhoweare, and sharedholder on May 22 2004.
