Title: The Mini Series

ken1701e - February 27, 2005 09:22 AM (GMT)
Finally got around to watching this, this morning (only been on my dvd shelves since the day of release).

Visually impressive with intersting characters etc but Bloody dull!!!!

Anyone who loves this please do not complain that NEMESIS has dull moments ever again because compared to this it is action packed. And if the series is like this then I for one am glad that ENTERPRISE is not.

Sorry - I guess we just all cannot have the same taste.

Sorry to disagree Ken, but the Galactica mini series is a perfect showcase for how you can have a slow pace without sacrificing quality. Nemesis is the very epitome of tedium ;)

The series itself would probably be more to your liking as the pacing isn't quite as slow as it is here.

Bloody hell!

never thought I'd hear those words when describing BSG

each to their own I suppose... :whistling:

But at no point in NEMESIS does events get as slow as they do in this and for so long.

It took me all my time to not fall asleep  during parts of this mini-series (granted I did watch it as a 3 hr movie)

If the series is at all like this then not only is ENTERPRISE better than this but so is DR WHO/FIREFLY/B5/ALL THE TREKS/X-FILES and perhaps even the original.

SORRY TO ALL YOU BATTLESTAR FANS :tear:

ken1701e - March 4, 2005 10:25 PM (GMT)
just reread some of what i have put on this thread and although i still think it was dull in places I want to apologise for some of the rest.

I think i was just not feeling great when i watched it thats all.

I will rewatch it again at some point and then the series as well.

 I'd have to reverse that statement and say that other than DS9 & TNG it was :p

DS9's static nature was it's saving grace, and largely what elevated beyond the tedium that have been synonymous with both Voyager and Enterprise. DS9 didn't have a planet of the week to explore, instead they were forced to simply write better, and it showed. The writing on Enterprise is more often than not lax and sloppy. To a lesser degree, the same was also true of Voyager. DS9 by comparison was quite tight, it's story more consistent, and it's characters easily the best defined of any of the Trek shows.

Back to BSG, there's a way to write slow-paced drama, this was it. ;)

LoobiLou - March 5, 2005 10:43 PM (GMT)
What was slow paced about it? There was a f*cking great big robot invasion! :o

By its very definintion DS9 never felt like TREK to me. Dont get me wrong I still prefered it over a lot of the other rubbish that is on tv but I never liked SISKO (From Episode 1) and by the time Worf joined I just drifted away from it.

Trek -To bodly go where no man/one has gone before, to seek out new life etc - how can you do that on a STATIC space station?????????????

I didn't like him to begin with either Ken. It took me some time to accept him. Avery Brook's style is unorthodox to say the least. But, I have to say, he's probably the Trek character that I've come to admire and like the most over the years. Here's a guy who can handle responsibility. Not of that "We can't marry him off" or "he can't have a family" boll*cks. Sisko's the most three-dimensional Captain there's been, and it makes the character so much richer for it.

You miss the point though Ken. Had they gone down that route then DS9 would likely have suffered the same fate as Voyager and Enterprise. People had already seen that particular aspect of Trek with TOS and TNG, why retread old ground ?? DS9 just took another Trek cornerstone, characterisation, and focused on that as a hallmark of the series. DS9 has the most developed and explored set of characters of any Trek show. That isn't just in terms of the primary cast of characters, but there's also the peripheral groups as well. Just take a look at the supporting cast; Nog, Rom, Vic, Weyoun, Damar, Dukat, Zek, Brunt, Morn, Leeta, Garak etc etc. Take any one of them and they're as rounded, if not more, than any of the other series' principle cast members.

DS9 was the last time the Trek franchise dared to be brilliant. It was unique in that Berman/Paramount gave Ira Behr almost complete creative control. In light of recent and current opinion of Berman, that's very much a good thing. ;)

laughitupfuzzball - March 6, 2005 01:07 PM (GMT)
I agree Sisko is a great character, he doesn't blindly follow regulations and uses his own morals to judge situations. He's not afraid of going it alone and as James says has true relationships with his crew and family. He is allowed to have deep friendships, allowed to lose his temper and also re-evalutates Starfleets decisions.

The importance that cultures have good or bad is highlighted brilliantly in this series and what makes it more interesting. DS9 isn't as black and white right or wrong, lines get merged as we see what motivates the different species. :)

Its a good point worth making, but Morn?!? Surely he was the epitome of one-dimensional-ness.

Maybe I just shouldnt have watched the three hours all in one go

I gave it half a seasons chance (Not sure which one though, there was a big war going on, possibly involving romulans? and maybe some people that looked just like them?) Didn't take to it though, the very fact that it was a trek series was the final straw

Sounds like one of the later seasons.

It's the most un-Trek of all the Trek shows

Haven't read through the rest of the thread as I don't want to be spoiled ( ).

Watched the first 1hr 50 mins last night and was very impressed. The acting was good, the characters interesting and the plot engaging. Looking forward to watching the rest and getting S1

The Cylons seem to have a few more weapons in their arsenal as well ;)

One of the things that impressed me most was that how well the characters were introduced. Sometimes in a new series the characterisation is a bit heavy handed but I thought they got it pretty much spot on :)

EDIT: I've rewatched it a couple of times recently and I've got to say, having just re-read this thread, that I thought the pacing of the mini was just about spot on.

The first hour could be described as slow, but I think - like Dave says - the characters are introduced in such a way during that time (and you're fed quite a lot of information in a very subtle way) that it makes it even more interesting to go back and watch after seeing the rest of the series.

As what is effectively an elongated pilot episode, I think it's pretty damn impressive.
