"Trekkies" go warp at end of TV series
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Star Trek" fans from around the world have gathered at the gates of Paramount Studios in Hollywood to protest the impending cancellation of the television series "Star Trek: Enterprise".

Carrying signs reading "It's Not Just a Show, It's a Responsibility" and "18 Years of Loyalty and This Is the Thanks I Get?", more than 100 people massed at the gates of Paramount on Friday, where "Enterprise" is produced, to show support for a franchise that has perhaps the most loyal fan base in the world.

None wore costumes, however, in a departure from many gatherings of "Trekkies".

The UPN network, which like Paramount is a unit of Viacom, said earlier this month it would end "Enterprise" in May after four seasons on air. But the fans are not letting it go quietly.

Paramount and UPN officials declined to comment.

"'Star Trek: Enterprise' ... is quality television, unlike a lot of the reality you see on TV today," said Candice McCallie, the Texas-based publicity director for Web site TrekUnited.com and an organizer of Friday's protest.

And organized it was -- attendees had professional laminated badges, posters and even permits from the L.A. Police Department to block the sidewalks around the studio.

Although the original series created by Gene Roddenberry ran only from 1966 to 1969, at least one version of "Star Trek" has constantly been on air since 1987 -- "The Next Generation", "Deep Space Nine", "Voyager" and now "Enterprise".

The current series is something of a prequel, set in the earlier days of human space exploration and the "Star Trek" universe, well before those other series took place.

"Enterprise" is tied for 150th place in ratings this season, according to Nielsen Media Research, but McCallie argued "Enterprise" peaked creatively this year.

"It's some of the best 'Star Trek' we've seen in the 18 years it's been on," she said.

Fans are so dedicated that TrekUnited has raised more than $48,000 (25,000 pounds) to give to Paramount to potentially produce a fifth season of the show.

I surely can't be the only one who wished that Paramount had paid Bill Shatner to turn up for a few minutes to shout through a loudhailer "Get a life!!" :lmao: :lmao:

So that was the entire American viewership wasn't it?

I don't understand the Neilsen rating system (who does?) but that doesn't sound good does it?

Paramount will be sighing with relief. 100 people won't worry them too much.

Some of the best television in the last 18 years ?? WTF have they been watching ??

Enterprise's Neilsen ratings have always been pretty low, often coming in last (or if it were lucky second last) for the time slot. It is however, extremely popular in d/l circles. Offhand, I've a feeling it's the most d/l show.

jamiearmour - February 26, 2005 10:37 AM (GMT)
So! It's all your fault then? You downloaded it. You killed the ratings? You killed the show!

Thankyou

goth willow fan - February 26, 2005 10:38 AM (GMT)
wow 100 people.

Paramount must be quaking in their boots at that overwhelming surge of protest outside their gates.

jamiearmour - February 26, 2005 10:45 AM (GMT)
They've also raised $48,000 towards self financing another series :o So that's like another $30,000,000 to go then?

If they did manage it though, wouldn't they all be entitled to and exec producers credit? The end credits would need a couple of ad breaks in it

Crichton Kicks - February 26, 2005 10:50 AM (GMT)
Methinks they need a reality check.

It was cancelled with good reason, it was poor. And considering that in recent years we've seen shows like Firefly, Angel and Jeremiah cancelled, they've little right to complain too much

Well there are usually around 170 shows on the list, so no, it isn't very good at all.

While its nice that they care so much about its future, I am baffled as to why. I thought even the least discerning of Trek fans didn't really care about Enterprise by now, but apparently not. In a time when there are so many truly excellent shows airing, I don't think it'll be missed all that much.

Aren't they going to be doing protests at various places around the world too? Oddly enough one of them is outside of BBC Television Centre. Should someone tell them that the BBC don't show it?

jamiearmour - February 26, 2005 10:54 AM (GMT)
You used the right word there Eddie, "discerning". I think these people are the lunatic fringe of trekdom.

Am I the only one whos is thinking that Carl will be the only person to turn up to the protest outside the beeb? :lmao: And probably in full starfleet uniform as well

I'm sure C4 will be breathing a sigh of relief

You're right Eddie, at a time when you have BSG and a potential renaissance of SG1 next year, I doubt I'll be missing it too much.

Heh, and I wasn't even thinking of those, largely because I just couldn't get into Galactica at all and SG-1 kind of lost it for me somewhere around s5.

I think as a whole tv is at the highest point it has ever been at though, but sadly not a lot of it is actually thanks to genre programming. New shows like Lost and Carnivale are certainly pushing things, and hopefully the success of the former will lead to networks daring to make more sf/fantasy based shows. Fox are moving forward with a show that sounds similar to Lost but set in space (oddly enough, not called Lost in Space), but I expect that'll be cancelled after a handful of episodes.

Kind of went off on a tangent there, but no matter.

Crichton Kicks - February 26, 2005 11:57 AM (GMT)
SG1's been on the wane over the past few years, with them continually trying to figure out ways around RDA's reduced role, but with Ben Browder on board next season, I'm expecting a return to form :)

Galactica, for my money, is one of the best things since B5 ended. I've been a fan of Ron Moore's stuff from his time with Star Trek. Carnivale is another great show. The second season is shaping up to be a massive step forward from year one, which in itself was bloody good.

I think you're right with Lost. The genre needs something to spark a flurry of interest again. I remember back in the early 90s, TNG fired the network imagination, and later both The XF and Buffy have done the same. Let's just hope that Lost is half as successful to that degree

Haven't heard about that show on Fox, sounds interesting, but Fox ?? You'r right, unless it hits stellar ratings straight away it'll probably be gone inside 6 episodes :(

Eddie - February 26, 2005 12:41 PM (GMT)
Well I keep saying that I'll try Galactica again at some point. Probably if I can pick up the DVD set on the cheap or something. I really despised the pilot but found the first regular episode to be a fair bit better, but never really stuck with it.

I'm not actually liking Carnivale as much this year. Too much padding compared to the previous year. Its still far above most things on tv but I find the episode packed with revealations, two episodes of filler structure they seemed to have settled into a little irritating.

I think Lost will be the show that changes things for now, if only because of the ratings its getting. Hopefully it'll signal that continuity heavy genre shows do have an appeal, although it'll probably cause a whole slew of dodgy knock-offs.

The Fox one, if I recall correctly, is called Darkside and revolves around a bunch of astronauts stuck on the darkside of the moon and various ancient mysteries and the such. Hopefully it'll last longer than a handful of episodes, but I'm not all that optimistic. That said though, Fox haven't cancelled any of their new scripted dramas this year, so maybe they are improving. Or maybe its that they only launched one new show this year.

I think that's a fairly safe assumption unfortunately.

Re Darkside, that does sound interesting. I'll give that one a go.

Fox's Point Pleasant is on the verge, can't remember any other new shows from Fox this year. They did screw over Tru Calling of course

Eddie - February 26, 2005 12:51 PM (GMT)
Ah, I actually forgot about Point Pleasant (was only thinking of House), so two new shows. I can't see PP making it either. Which I can't say I'm all that fussed about.

Nor me. It's a shame though, it sounded fantastic beforehand. It was built up as being very Twin Peaks-esque. Perhaps that was giving it a little too much to live up to.

Eddie - February 26, 2005 01:00 PM (GMT)
Indeed. I try and remain generally indifferent about anything until I see it no matter how much hype there is. The best shows tend to be the ones that arrive with little fanfare anyway, as something like Carnivale demonstrates. I thought that looked awful beforehand.

I was pretty much looking forward to that, knowing that Ron Moore was attached.

Having said that, Ron Moore was also attached to Galactica, and I thought that was going to be the biggest stinker of the year before the mini series aired. It looked awful.

$48,000 has been raised to help save Enterprise-this should just about pay for new opening credits...

I'm not bothered that Enterprise has been cancelled but I would say is an extremely poor time for science fiction/cult TV programming. Admittedly I haven't seen stargate Atlantas & BSG yet but there really isn't anything I care about one television any more. While I hope stargate S G 1 is going to get better I don't really have high hopes for it but fingers crossed Ben Browder makes a huge impact.

What else is there at the moment Smallville, Point pleasant, the 4400, urm Carnivale... I think that's it. Only carnivale is really any good and I think it could be better if more of the story was supernatural related rather than about the carnivale.

If you ask me the genre is in trouble , unless BSG is as good as people are saying, and needs something special right now.

Eddie - February 26, 2005 03:09 PM (GMT)
Well I never really said that the genre was in a great state, just that television in general is. I've shifted more toward non-genre programming over the past couple of years, but I don't know if thats down to a lack of good material or just a change in my tastes.

As for the genre though, the only shows I'm really with at the moment are Lost and Carnivale. I could rattle off a whole list of shows that have elevated tv as a whole, but those are the only two sf/fantasy ones. I really do think the success of Lost (and to a lesser extent, BSG) will bring about a whole host of new genre programming, in the same way the X-Files did when that originally aired.

Scifi/fantasy seems to go in phases. We have a few great years, and then nothing until something big comes along and revitalises it again. I personally think we're entering that stage again now and the next couple of years should be rather good for the genre.

I know what you mean I've done the same and currently watch no end of none genre TV. I don't think it's a changing my tastes more that there's less good sci-fi to actually watch. I can't say I really care about any of the non-genre shows all that much although some of them are quite entertaining... I Certainly do not care enough to buy the DVDs or even watch repeats.

If you ask me it is, but people are split on that one. If you like it, you'll love it.

I thought The 4400 was pretty good, I'm looking forward to the second season.

The main problem is that for the past 20 years you've had something strong leading the way; Trek, XF, Buffy etc, but now you don't really. Yet, anyway.

I applaud   any action by any idividual in the states in the bid to have ENTERPRISE saved.

Yes there are those of you here who obviously dont like the series but I have loved it, even more the longer it has gone on. Yes series 1 was poor, yes series 2 wasnt much better but the same could be said of NEXT GEN and DS9!!!

Season 3 on the other hand was very good and I have enjoyed all of season 4 that I have seen.

Its a shame that the efforts of these individuals will probably not make any difference, as the only channel that would make sense reserecting ENTERPRISE is the SCI-FI channel and I cannot see that happening.

What a pity - the next 3 seasons could have been something wonderful!!!!!

Keeping silent on the demise of Enterprise until I've actually seen season 4. Just over a week to go now, wihoo!

But I have to say, having only seen up until the end of season 3, I'm with Ken. From the little I've read of what you guys say, I'm not holding out too much hope to be honest.

The show itself may not survive, but I liked some of what Manny Coto had to say in the message James posted earlier, and it would be a waste if some of those ideas weren't explored. Season 5 in novel form, anyone?

Maybe I should crank up Word, and have a go myself, lol!
