Title: Finished!
Hovis - February 22, 2005 08:41 AM (GMT)
Last night, I got to watch the final two episodes of season 5, and wow, now I've finished watching the show, I can sit back and enjoy the memories.
First of all, thanks to James. Without his 'encouragement' shall we say, I'd have never got to watch the show. Plunging in at the deepend and buying a season of a tv show you've never seen before on dvd is daft, but it was a gamble worth taking, and I knew it was going to pay off after watching a handful of episodes.
The show is completely unique. No other show has that arc that runs through it from start to finish. As one of the fans said on one of the extras on the season 5 dvd, it's just like reading a book, a very good one. All the little threads are there throughout, and as you watch and get more of the story, the threads merge into a wonderful tapestry.
The character development is astounding too. Just a couple of examples... I've said elsewhere that I think the Londo/G'kar relationship is one of the highlights of this, or any other sci-fi show I've seen. The development of Vir from the bumbling buffoon of the first season through to the confident character he is in the last 2 seasons is a great example. In the finale, it comes as no surprise to see that he has achieved the destiny mapped out for him, and he wears it well!
I could go on for ages about how wonderful I've found B5, but I should be w**king!
Take care,
Andrew (HM) :upside:

It's like will probably never be seen again.

Paul's right, it's highly unlikely we'll ever see something afforded so much flexibility again. It's a shame, as both JMS and Ira Behr to a smaller degree have shown in recent years the vast benefit of leaving someone to get on with a job without interfering every two minutes.
Andrew, I'm really glad you enjoyed it. For my money it's still the best series I've ever come across. Sometimes, where DVDs are concerned you just have to take a gamble. When it pays off, it's great
You've still got the movies, and Crusade to go yet though haven't you ?? ;)

Does Andrew have to watch all of the TV movies? I love the show and even I couldn't stand "River of Souls" :fear:

In the Beginning and A Call to Arms are definitely the pick of them.
What a waste of Martin Sheen, River of Souls was

You may also notice my complete avoidance of the subject of "Thirdspace" :fear: The only redeeming quality in that one was the great w**k put in by Patricia Tallman  I got the feeling that the others were "phoning in" their w**k on that one. Or was that just me? :innocent:

That's true, James, and looking forward to them all immensely! Despite Jamie's comments!
Will have to get ordering I guess!

When getting the movie set, make sure you get the US version - not only does it come with all 5 movies for the same price as the 3 on the UK set, it's set to Region 0 (or it's equivalent) meaning you can easily watch it on a UK R2 player! (and I've checked it on my R2-only player as well) :)

That's handy to know! Not that it bothers me which region it is but my brother only has a region 2 player

Thanks for the advice, Phillip, but I already have 'The Gathering', and 'In the Beginning.' Or are the extras on the US version any different?
Thanks,

They both have full commentaries in the movie set.

There's also a feature on 'How science and the series have influenced each other', although given how you've got the other two releases already it's a bit irrelevant :)
I knew there was a reason I held off on the standalone releases :D
Crichton Kicks - February 27, 2005 01:34 AM (GMT)
You can get the R2 release for about £30, or there's the R1 (which is actually R0) with 2 additional movies (each with commentary) for £31.99 from PlayUSA ;)

So much for all the talk about ordering and asking for advice about the merits of the R0/1 and R2 versions! I must have heard the box sets calling to me as soon as I set foot in the first shop that had them in stock yesterday, and well, it's now in pride of place on the shelf.
Looking forward to watching them, but it will have to wait as we are off to Dublin for a few days. Have a good week everyone, and will catch you all when I get back at the weekend!
Take care,

I know it is too late for Hovis .. Actually it's not... Hovis, take back your region 2 copies and order of the region 1 set. I know I haven't got them yet myself but they also have 5.1 sound and you could always sell on your stand-alone copies of the gathering and in the beginning. Also like Crichton kicks said there's not much difference in the price!

I'll be getting the R1 version methinks.

Sleeping in Light is a w**k of art. I've yet to see another hour of television to rival it.
