Title: Angel 5.19

Timebomb

So what do we think.

Illyria, I'm really starting to like her. Did everyone elses heart stop when she killed the entire group? For a demon shes very sympathetic for me anyway, very innocent, hellbent but innocent, now that's a combination.

Very clever episode, each flashback revealing more, very Memento style.

A new side of Wes, meet Wes the giggling, gibbering madman. The grief that man has gone through, with Fred and the finding out how he betrayed Angel.

Illyria, rescuing Gunn, off her own back, it would seem. And the cellar demon dismembering his own heart, priceless. Gunn trying to settle back into work, bless.

The Wes and Gunn scene, not too badly handled, it could have been awkward or a slanging match, the writers took an easier route.

I didn't really see the the unempowering Illyria angle coming. With all the time jumping, it was getting a little hard to follow! And Wes' little explanation about not loving IT, but needing IT, small tear :(

I'm glad Angel realised how Illyria could benefit the group, and just how are they going to fit THE Apocolapse into 3 episodes. Will we finally see the Senior Partners. it reminded me a bit of the Pylea arc, the Wolf, Ram and Hart spoken of. So they know of Illyria and vice versa, do we finally got information.

So that's DB's wife, she wasn't as pretty as I'd have thought to be :D

melian - May 20, 2004 03:29 PM (GMT)
And why did Angel want to give the baby to the demons - wouldn't that be wrong?

All in all, this was a pretty fab episode :D

I loved the whole crazy Wes thing, it was almost like he was doing his own Fred impression, you know, from when she would hardly come out of her room!!

I'd already read a spoiler that basically said the series ended with them all being killed, as usual whoever writes these things only got it partly right.

As for Illyria, gods considered her a god, when you're that powerful I suppose things can seem very simple.

I liked this episode, Angel gets back to the top of the Enterprise/Smallville/Tru calling/Angel what to watch first list.

Persephone - May 20, 2004 03:59 PM (GMT)
No spoilers please, I want the final to be a surprise!

I forgot about that Melian, at the end, I remember turning to hubby saying, What, has Angel gone evil again ;)

SkiBore - May 23, 2004 09:54 AM (GMT)
Just re-recorded and re watched this ep – and I’m not sure about the being blown back in time part, I can’t see why the Angel that was travelling back and forth in time with Illyria should replace the Angel that already existed at that point in time after Illyria self-destructs, an explosion wouldn’t have the intelligence to surgically replace one version of a person with another, the second time around there should have been two Angels walking to the sparring room with Spike and Wes.

But then they would have had two Angels and that probably would have interrupted the flow of the episode.

Time travel paradoxes, Mmmmm.

Persephone - May 23, 2004 11:08 AM (GMT)
nooooo Ski Bore you're making me head hurt :weird:

SkiBore - May 23, 2004 03:04 PM (GMT)
Unless . . . Angel had been plucked out of time when he was swept along in Illyria's wake and then dropped in the hallway outside the sparring room by the explosion, but then Wes wouldn't turned and said "Angel, we've been over all this" because Angel would have been time travelling with Illyria and not talking to Wes & Spike.

I feel better now I've got that off my chest, now I can delete the episode.

Sorry - you did say "sanity", right? :P

I don’t have to take this kind of ridicule – if nobody wants to discuss the nuances of the plot then fine – next, we’ll be discussing our feelings about the characters.

I’m of to listen to listen to my Todd Rundgren CD.

Now, about our feelings about the characters... :P

melian - May 24, 2004 11:05 AM (GMT)
Try telling us something we DON'T know :D

willowroolz - May 24, 2004 11:08 AM (GMT)
*Ahem* Willow doesn't appear in Angel enough. That's about it really. :D

melian - May 24, 2004 11:11 AM (GMT)
I'm sure there was at least 1 Angel cast member who would whole heartedly agree with you there B)

willowroolz - May 24, 2004 11:14 AM (GMT)
You had to bring him up, didn't you? <_<

Persephone - May 24, 2004 11:17 AM (GMT)
Does that mean we can talk about the lovely Mr Denisof, mmmmmmmmmm Wes.

DB's not bad either, bit weighty atm,too many tasty blood treats. Spike, never liked blondes except Brad obviously, nice cheekbones though,

So back to Wes, mmmmmmmmm

Am I annoying you yet WR?

Rugged, manly, unshaven Wes. With guns!!!!

willowroolz - May 24, 2004 11:20 AM (GMT)
He's just as married as she is you know!

melian - May 24, 2004 11:21 AM (GMT)
But the thing is I like the character, not the man himself.

You mean a leather clad motor bike riding rouge demon hunter that klutzed everything up ?

Psycho Jack - May 24, 2004 11:28 AM (GMT)
I don’t really have much to say about this tbh. It was a bit of none-episode, nonetheless enjoyable enough.

It was effectively 10 minuets worth of good stuff dragged out over 40 odd minuets. For all I care it could’ve stopped after Gunn came out of the dimension (who could’ve thought it was so simple! ;) )and then moved onto them “fixing” Illyria.

I’m just disappointed that with three episodes to go, there isn’t even the glimmer of hope of a big arc developing. I suppose the end was mysterious enough in Angel overriding Gunn about the baby, but that was about it! I think another important part was Gunn’s attire. The suits are gun and the “street” clothes are back. He is at peace with himself now and I think that’s important for him.

Overall, it was another episode in a long line of “could’ve been but wasn’t”, increasingly reflecting this season.

melian - May 24, 2004 11:28 AM (GMT)
Well, I liked the leather ;)

Right with you there. Things have picked up in the last few weeks but overall it's been a disappointing season. :(

I can honestly only pick up two or three notable episodes this season and that is such a shame. :(

The idea that there wouldn’t be a lean towards arcs, but a focus more on closed narratives was good in theory, but in practice it failed. It worked in much better in S1 because it was new and different to Buffy, not to mention that frankly it was done a lot better.

Persephone - May 24, 2004 11:50 AM (GMT)
I think they were using season 5 as a springboard for season 6, just a shame we'll never know, cos season 6 sounded like it would have been Angel on top form

Sorry, not with you on that one, which probably puts me in the minority  . I do enjoy the show but I've never really liked the characters as much, apart from the ones that crossed over from Buffy. I've found it difficult to invest any emotions in Gunn and Lorne and Fred, which I've found makes it difficult to get really involved in the stories.

Okay, do you want to go back to dissecting plot holes then ;)

There were more on Buffy

Well, probably, but everyone is entitled to their own opinions. However wrong they may be! ;)

For me S1 of Angel was fantastic. It was slicker than Buffy. I do like Buffy, but if I had to choose, Angel would come first.

In terms of Angel, season-wise I'd say 1,4,2,3,5.

LoobiLou - May 24, 2004 12:22 PM (GMT)
I'm with WR on this one (god that's scary  )
I've loved this season!

But that's probably cos i know what happens in the end....
