I don't know if anyone else here, like me, is a fan of the w**k of Gerry Anderson. If you are then check out all new Captain Scarlet, instead of puppets (which some people don't like for some reason) this is CGI. Elements of the original format have been changed but, unlike the Thunderbirds movie, Gerry Anderson was directly involved in the making of this, so it should be good.

Didn't know anyone remembered Fireball XL5 :D

I've always been a Fanderson so I'll be watching. :toomuchtv:

I gave in and got the R1 DVD set right before the R2 one was announced :)

Strangely, despite being a fan of the Supermarionation series, I'm really not excited about this!

Of course, the 9:30 start time doesn't help -during the weekend I'm usually asleep at that time :)

Ah. I take it that means 9.30 in the am :stoopid:

Oh :shit:

Matthew Matic - February 3, 2005 01:37 PM (GMT)
I think it might be repeated on ITV2 at a later time, but I'm not sure about that.

I've also now been told that it airs at 10.25am, although I'll still be there at 09:30 to make sure. If untrained equines can't stop me watching then temporal uncertainty certainly can't!

It just all goes to show, communication between Spectrum and the World Space Patrol isn't what it used to be

"CAPTAIN SCARLET ON CiTV!
Hi, and welcome to the first Spectratech Mail from CaptainScarlet.com!

On 27th January 2005 British broadcaster ITV announced that they would be the first channel worldwide to air Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet!

The show will be shown on the children's show Ministry of Mayhem on Saturday mornings at 9.30. The first show will go out on air on 12th February, so be sure to set your alarm clocks!

Here is the official Press Release:

PRESS RELEASE
THUNDERBIRDS CREATOR GERRY ANDERSON BRINGS HIGH-OCTANE ACTION TO SATURDAY MORNINGS ON CiTV IN HIS ALL NEW CGI ANIMATION OF CAPTAIN SCARLET
Gerry Anderson's classic cult character Captain Scarlet is back on our screens in the most impressive animated series to hit kids' TV this century. The breath-taking scenes, mind-blowing action and dramatic storylines in each 22-minute episode of Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet pack all the punch of a blockbuster movie. With production costs of $30 million across 26 episodes and produced in High Definition with Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound, the New Captain Scarlet will bring the cinema experience directly into the home.

Gerry Anderson says, "The New Captain Scarlet is the most advanced and adventurous production I have ever made, taking family sci-fi action adventure to another level and CGI television animation into a new dimension."

Based on the original 1960s series, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Gerry Anderson has cut loose his strings and opted for the latest motion capture system and cutting edge CGI to create this breakthrough TV series for ITV. The puppets have become actors on a futuristic set full of edge-of-the-seat excitement.

Twenty years after man's first steps on Mars, Captain Scarlet and Captain Black, agents of the elite security force, Spectrum, are sent there to investigate alien signals. After coming face to face with the evil Mysterons, both men are destroyed and the Mysterons declare war on planet Earth. Meanwhile the Mysterons attempt to rebuild Captain Scarlet in order to use him as a weapon of destruction against Earth. He manages to escape their control and return to Spectrum, but their genetic mutation of his body leaves him virtually indestructible. Not to be deterred, the Mysterons instead rebuild Captain Black who becomes their primary instrument of destruction.

Stationed on Skybase, it's up to Spectrum to protect Earth from the Mysterons' destruction. Colonel White and his right-hand woman Lieutenant Green head up the operation from Skybase, while Captain Scarlet and his sidekick Captain Blue handle ground patrol. Air defence comes from an all-female squadron of fighter pilots, the Angels, led by the tough and feisty Destiny Angel.

The New Captain Scarlet is produced by Gerry Anderson and boasts an impressive production team including director David Lane, and Conceptual Artist and Director Dominic Lavery who worked on the James Bond movies.

The world premiere of Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet will be on CiTV's MOM on Saturday 12th February- Vanessa Hill, Series Editor of MOM says:

"We're all extremely pleased to have Captain Scarlet on MOM; it's a fantastic animation. Viewers expect high quality programmes and this certainly fits the bill. We hope that viewers of MOM enjoy the series as much as the presenters and production team have".
Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet is the ultimate adventure in Outer Space. Exciting, atmospheric and full of dramatic tension it's definitely worth getting out of bed for!"

goth willow fan - February 11, 2005 10:16 AM (GMT)
It's MoM itself that starts at 9:30 :ph43r:

That means that CS will probably be shown in 2 chunks with inane crap in between :ermm:

MoM is on at 9.30. Gawd knows when Captain Scarlet will be shown

Or in how many segments :(

Matthew Matic - February 11, 2005 02:02 PM (GMT)
I've been told that, according the sky+ boxes, CS is scheduled for 10:30 and is apart from Mom, so hopefully no inane gibberish in the middle

B*llocks.

I've only just noticed this thread

No doubt it'll be online in the next day or two. I'll be looking forward to this, CS is really the only GA show that I had any time for. It was a lot darker than the others.

Thunderbirds, Stingray etc always came off as second best to Star Fleet on the supermarionation front

PinkMonster - February 12, 2005 12:43 PM (GMT)
I loved it too.

I just can't wait to have it on DVD.

And I can't wait for next Saturday to see more.

There's 26 episodes as well isn't there ??

PinkMonster - February 12, 2005 03:05 PM (GMT)
Yep-26.

But we'll only be seeing the first 13 eppys in this run, then the rest in September.

Pretty much in the same way that Sci-Fi handles SG1 in the States. I prefer that to be honest. Should a second series be made, the wait inbetween seasons won't be too long.

13 episodes now will take us into May, so it's only about a three month wait for the rest of the series.

I enjoyed the show a lot and I'm looking foward to next week to see more. Even so I don't think we can really judge the series until at least the third epsiode, when it is no longer the opening two-parter but is self contained. I do think, though, we can already see that this new version follows in the spirit of the old.

I do have two negative things to say, although I do admit that I only think these as I am a big fan of the old and complete newbies would have no trouble with them. These points are:
1. Barry Gray hasn't done the music, and the drumbeat that changes scenes is different.
2. It's CGI and not puppets. As The Duke said to me earlier, a great part of the old series is seeing things like a puppet reach for a gun, then cutting to a real human hand picking up a gun, then cutting to a puppet with a gun stuck on its hand. That kind of stuff just had its own charm.

All in all, though, I'm not dissapointed and look foward to being very happy with it as the season progresses.

willowroolz - February 12, 2005 08:02 PM (GMT)
Yeah, the new theme music was a bit disappointing

Agree completely about the music - not great.

As for it not being puppets - so what? The CGI is fantastic and the characters can be so much more dynamic. (and I'm talking as a fan of the original) :)

Matthew Matic - February 12, 2005 08:28 PM (GMT)
I know CGI is good and the series won't be any worse for not having marionettes, but you gotta love those puppets

Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet received its world television premiere on Saturday, February 12th, 2005 with the screening of the opening episode, Instrument Of Destruction - Part 1, in a 10.30am slot on ITV as part of the network's Ministry Of Mayhem children's programme. Announced only on January 27th, the news of the series' debut so early in the year was a surprise both to viewers and members of the cast and production team, who had not expected transmission to take place before the autumn.

Gerry Anderson told FABNews, "This came as much of a suprise to me as it does to you. When we shut down production for the Christmas break, everything was still on course for an autumn premiere, but things have changed very quickly since the New Year.

"ITV found a slot that will give the series maximum impact on ITV childrens' television. We had completed and delivered the first 13 episodes, so it made a lot of sense for New Captain Scarlet to air sooner than we had originally thought."

Ministry Of Mayhem series editor Vanessa Hill told FABNews, "We're all extremely pleased to have New Captain Scarlet on MOM - it's a fantastic animation. Viewers expect high quality programmes and this certainly fits the bill. We hope that viewers of MOM enjoy the series as much as the presenters and production team have."

Sadly Hill's respect for the series was not reflected in its presentation, and many viewers were disappointed to find the first episode split into two ten-minute chunks separated by fifteen minutes of an inane quiz game in which the presenters and members of the studio audience attempted to determine the true identity of the mother of Lee from boy band Blue.

There were also three cuts made to the episode: a fight between Scarlet and Blue in the Skybase detention area (10 seconds), a fight between Scarlet and Blue on the White Falcon hangar deck (20 seconds), and the whole of the end title sequence (30 seconds). The CITV DOG (Digital On-screen Graphic) appeared in the top left-hand corner throughout.

Anderson Entertainment is negotiating with ITV for uncut repeat screenings in a later timeslot, possibly on ITV2. However, a decision on this may not be finalised until the ratings for the opening episodes on Ministry Of Mayhem have been assessed. Negotiations are also ongoing with a digital channel which specialises in action/adventure animated series. The uncut episodes will also be released on DVD in October.

New Captain Scarlet is currently scheduled to run for 13 weeks on Ministry Of Mayhem. The remaining 13 episodes, which will not complete production until July, will air as a second series in the autumn.

The initial series of New Captain Scarlet on ITV comprises the following episodes:

Instrument Of Destruction - Part 1  (February 12th, 2005)
Instrument Of Destruction - Part 2  (February 19th, 2005)
Swarm  (February 26th, 2005)
Rat Trap  (March 5th, 2005)
The Homecoming  (March 12th, 2005)
Mercury Falling  (March 19th, 2005)
Circles Of Doom  (March 26th, 2005)
Rain Of Terror  (April 2nd, 2005)
Skin Deep  (April 9th, 2005)
Chiller  (April 16th, 2005)
Trap For A Rhino  (April 23rd, 2005)
Heist  (April 30th, 2005)
The Achilles Messenger  (May 1st, 2005)

The news of the series' early arrival on British television was announced at the opening day of the London Toy Fair at the ExCel centre in Docklands where the Japanese toy manufacturer Bandai unveiled a stunning range of New Captain Scarlet action figures, vehicles and utility equipment. These are scheduled to go on sale in June. A wide variety of merchandise from other manufacturers - including books, games, posters, apparel, confectionery and calendars - will be tied to the broadcast of the second series in the autumn.

Interesting. I thought I detected some cuts in there <_<

Just another reason to get the dvds in October then

Here's the official website

Matthew Matic - February 19, 2005 11:37 AM (GMT)
A bit of a later start time today, but less inane gibberish in between parts so that was OK. I thought the second episode was similar in quality to the first, good overall. I do find the pace a bit fast though. Maybe that's what kids today want but I prefer programmes where I start to get bored in the middle.

Next week we have the first standalone espisode 'Swarm', I'm hoping that, like the original, it will start with 'This is the voice of the Mysterons...' and a little Riddle-me-ree about what dastardly deeds they hope to get up to. At least then we wont have to listen to that music. I put my fingers in my ears and hummed the original theme tune during the openging sequence today.

I'm getting used to the new drumroll now, might even be better than the original.

In summary, so far I think spectrum is more green than red

goth willow fan - February 19, 2005 12:09 PM (GMT)
Good ep again.

Though why do we have to have a ticker in huge letters across the bottom and why a recap before the second chunk? Surely we can remember stuff we saw a few minutes ago!

willowroolz - February 19, 2005 12:39 PM (GMT)
Bollocks! I set it to record from 10:30 to 11:15 so I didn't have to sit through all the surrounding drivel and, thanks to the later start time, managed to miss the frelling end of it

Not happy <_<

As an old bugger whith no children I'm no expert on kids tv. Is it always this bad?

And why is CS in this slot anyway, instead of having it's on slot, as it used to.

I've decided that I'm going to wait for the DVD set before I catch it :)

So... is it still as "adult" as the original? (No, that's not as in "indepth on Paul & Adam's relationship... you know what I mean... :p )

Part of the intriguing thing about the original was how nasty things could get, yet being in a children's slot makes me wonder about that... would we still see Captain Black crushing some poor mechanic w**king on a car by activating the car lift and squishing them both agaisnt the ceiling? Sadistic as it sounds, it's those wonderfully evil things that made Captain Black so great...

Well he did kill a businessman in the first ep by locking him in a car and putting it in a crusher. :)

They've had to cut it, too, which indicates that it's not in the most appropriate timeslot

It's made me dig out the dvds of the originals, though, and they're still brilliant. The Captain Black puppet was always superb
