Forced into an uneasy alliance, President Roslin and Commander Adama do their best to lead the military into battle and the civilians to safety. Gaius Baltar, the corrupt genius who inadvertently helped the Cylons infiltrate the government's defense systems, has been rescued, treasured as one of humanity's last great intellectuals. No one has yet discovered Baltar's involvement in the Cylon attack — or that he is still haunted, and possibly controlled, by visions of the seductive Cylon "Number Six". Aboard the Galactica, Baltar's superior intellect ironically leads to his designation as the authority on all things Cylon. Outnumbered and outarmed, Adama reluctantly concedes that President Roslin was correct — this battle was lost before it had begun. With no choice but to flee, humanity's survivors set out in search of the mythic 13th Colony of Kobol ... a legendary planet known as Earth.

this is really a post for both parts of the mini-series.

I LOVED IT

Having missed this mini-series and the first series shown on Sky I have finally given up waiting for Sky to repeat it and rented the DVD. I have to say I was a little worried I wouldn't like it since everybody seems to be singing its praises. Anyway I didn't have high expectations for the mini-series of BSG expecting a mediocre pilot if you will and for things to get much much better than during the season. After an hour of watching I had to fight the urge not to log on to my computer and say "wow" :o right there & then. Anyway considering all the back story and character introductions I'm extremely excited about the possibilities of this series.

I can't believe Ken thought it was dull! :o It was far from dull and it seemed like so much was going on I was already excited about watching the first season and hadn't even finished the mini-series. :D

Because I watched it on DVD it wasn't split into two parts so I watched about an one hour and a half or so on Tuesday night and the rest on Wednesday night . I wish I had started it earlier on Tuesday so I could have watched it in one sitting because it was so fracking good :D .... Mind I prefer the sound of frelling from farscape.

I'm still not sure what I think of Starbuck being a woman since I still vaguely remember "Face" from the A-team in the role first time round. Don't get me wrong I love strong female characters I'm just uncertain about a woman with the arrogance of a pilot. It's quite strange how they have changed things around but kept everything the same, well just about any way.

So far so good and there seems to be lots of likeable characters and hopefully good stories ahead. The special effects were pretty damned amazing for television and had a nice blend of futuristic and retro with the technology. Like Jamie said I liked the missiles instead of the usual lasers/phasers and the nukes added a realism to to the destruction of the human race.

I really liked the sound of the drums during the action sequences which added tension and an intensity to what was happening. There were more likes but I can't remember now.

I can't remember exactly the few dislikes I had, generally though I thought this was fantastic and all in all this look like the most exciting piece of new sci-fi TV in a long time and for Ken to even suggest Enterprise or Nemesis are more interesting is complete insanity, no offence Ken. :)

The worst part is now i have to wait for the first disc from season one to be sent from my rental Que in the meantime I just can't wait to watch more episodes. Does anybody know when season 2 will be shown in the UK?

I forgot... Oh my God... right at the end there they shown Boomer is one of the Cylon's so she must be a sleeper. :o :(

...and how could I forget No. 6

So... You liked it then?

The series is, if anything, better than the mini, and there are no really weak eps.

It's likely that the UK won't get to see S2 first like what happened with S1.

how did you guess I liked it :p

I had a feeling that the US would get it first I just wondered if there was a rough UK date of when it's expected? Is there a US date yet?

There are rumours of a July start for series 2 on sci-fi.

Boomer :o. As soon as we found out about sleeper agents, I was trying to guess who it was and everytime someone new came on screen I was like "it's gotta be them, no them, no it's definitely that one", but for some reason I didn't suspect her.

I watched the whole mini-series in one, so it's all kind of merged together and I can't really remember what else happened in this part, so not much else to comment on specifically apart from..

I'm not sure if this is the right thread to post my review. I saw a miniseries (it ends with the revelation of the two Cylon agents -- one which I expected, the last one I didn't expect).

One of the reasons I put off watching this for so long was my unfavorable impression of the original, very cheesy show. I began watching it when it was originally broadcast but gave up after a few episodes -- maybe about the time Jane Seymour disappeared from it.

The previews to this remake didn't look much better but after hearing good things from this board, I decided to try it.

Overall impression:

Fast-moving with exciting battlescenes accompanied by thrumming a la Hong Kong actioners.

After the superb opening in the diplomatic arena between the old man and #6, there came a discouraging montage of familiar background building (maverick pilot, troubled father-son, lusty couple, dying woman). The storytelling never disposed of the soap opera elements. It just made the palatable with good writing that made each thread equally interesting so that there was no sense of loss when the story switched from one to the other.

Generally, the acting is very good. Of the main characters, I thought Grace Park was the weakest. I read that she was runner-up to Katee for the role of Starbuck. I suppose I can see why. She's extremely pretty but she could never have embodied the role of Starbuck as Katee does.

Once again, I surprised to find another Brit sneaking in under the radar. Jamie Bamber does well, particularly in the first scene with Olmos where he angrily reveals the cause of their split.

Even you Brits should start recognizing British Columbian scenery (green vistas, towering mountains) by now. Which explains the number of Canadians. Grace Park and Aaron Douglas are from Vancouver BC (near the filming location). And Callum Keith Rennie, too.

Good production values. Superb -- no, outstanding -- soundtrack. I wish more remakes could outdistance the original as much as this one has.

I am 35 so I remember the original to some extent too. In a way I feel lucky as the original was more aimed at kids so I quite enjoyed it. Seeing as the modern version is clearly aimed at adults I feel lucky again.

The modern version is so adult I am sympathetic to it being given a suitably adult rating. I doubt kids would understand or even relish the earthy and sometimes horrific stories presented. I have just started watching S3 and some of it is horrific. Not suitable for kids that is for sure.

One thing I like is that there is a mystical spin in the stories which thankfully do not push some religious line but merely suggest something like religion springs up in all human communities. Desert religions are harsher(Christianity, Islam) while Buddhism springs up reflecting a more moderate climate. I am not that interested in anthropology so I am not sure what the writers have in mind with Galactica.

One thing I had not noticed until I read it somewhere is that the Colonists have a religion with many Gods while the Cylons have one God which is closer to Judaism, Christianity and Islam. I do not know what significance this has in relation to how the protagonists relate to each other. sk

The original series had the Bible as inspiration -- Moses, I think, with Earth being the Promised Land. And Lorne Greene played his role with a Biblical quality about him.

I was surprised how much religion appeared in the new show (I've only seen the mini-series, remember). The creators may only be continuing the religious parallels -- but this time, making it more emcompassing. Or they may be religious themselves. But, as an atheist, it didn't play so large a part as to bother me.

I was more surprised to see the parallels to American government tho. The "President". And I believe the lady was the "Secretary [or Minister] of Education" (a current post on the Cabinet). And, when she is sworn-in as President, the first sight of the swearing in is a practically a direct steal of the real-life swearing-in photo of Lyndon Johnson on Air Force 1 following the assassination of John Kennedy. An American couldn't miss it.
