Title: What's It All About?
kicking it old school - January 26, 2005 11:14 PM (GMT)
I've never actually seen Alias, but would really like to get into it as I've heard many good things about it. I've passed the dvds in WHSmith several times and have been tempted to just buy the first season without ever having seen it (I can be impulsive like that! It's how I got into Angel), as it looks quite good. But I've managed to hold back until I find out a bit more about it. So, basically, what is it about? What's the general premise of the show? My favourite shows are Angel & Buffy, would I like it? Thanks.

Yes, get the first season! It's brilliant!
Basically, Alias is about Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner), a spy who believes she is w**king for the CIA. It turns out that she's actually been w**king for the enemy, and the show is about her being a double agent, and trying to take down the enemy while keeping up the pretence that she is w**king for them. Throw in an insane family, lots of different locations, crazy disguises and loads and loads of fighting, and you have a show that is highly implausible, but highly addictive. It's very much driven by character (like Buffy and Angel) and it's one of those shows that, once you've seen an episode, you just have to watch the next one straight away!
Hope you enjoy it!! :)

Thanks for the summary, it totally sounds like my kind of thing. I think I'll definitely be paying WHSmith a visit some time soon.

Think of it as a kind of Mission:Impossible type show and you will get the general idea.

I've now seen 1-4 and the first half of 5 (Doppelganger). I'm still absolutely loving it. Episode 4 (i think) was awesome, best one since the opener. The first episode is so far my favourite. I really like all the characters, Will (I *think* that's his name  unless I'm getting them confused) is really sweet, but he shouldn't keep trying to find out about her fiance's death. Marshall (possibly not his name, but I'm talking about the guy that makes all the gadgets) is so funny, I really like him. Sydney is really lovely (and I never realised how beautiful Jennifer Garner is! Not that I'm jealous or anything ;) ) but the situation with her dad makes me so upset. The show has got me on the brink of tears already, 4.5 episodes in! That's a really good sign, cause I'm not a teary person. In 7 years of Buffy, I cried 3 times. So yeah, it's still going great. Was also fun to see Jasmine (Gina Torres?) pop up in a couple of eps, although she freaks me out a bit.... her lips are so huge  The only thing that's bugging me is how the episode's end all cliff-hangery.. means I have to watch another one and therefore get even less of what I'm supposed to be doing done!

Yep, it's a pain like that. ;) The cliff hangers aren't quite so frequent after a few more episodes though, iirc. :)
goth willow fan - February 11, 2005 12:00 AM (GMT)
The cliff hangers get a bit less cliffhangery about half way through the first season :)

Good to know! Not that it's bothering me that much, it just makes it harder to take a break between episodes.

I remember getting the dvd set over a year ago and not knowing a thing about it. But we sat down, watched it and were so impressed that we got the second season as soon as possible!
IMO, the second season's even better.

I love S2 so much :)

On amazon, the 3rd season is only out on region 1. Is there a date for the R2 release? Or has it not even been shown on tv yet? I wanted to buy the 2nd and 3rd, as I know I'll finish the 2nd off in no time once I get it, and I'll be desperate for more! I'm enjoying it so much. What are everyone's favourite characters and stuff? Mine is Jack, he's so lovely.
Glad to hear the 2nd season is good. I hope it doesn't take too long to arrive. I have to know what happens next!
Margot C - February 19, 2005 11:40 PM (GMT)
S3 has been shown on Bravo (and, I believe Five? probably late at night...). I don't know anything about DVD releases, because by the end of S3 I had stopped caring about ever seeing it again so I didn't bother keeping up with the news on that.
My favourite character is Sydney, cause she's just so the kind of person I'd want to be friends with (if I was, you know...her age...). She's so kind and at the same time, so strong to keep going after everything she's been through. I also love Vaughn   and Jack, Dixon, Marshall, Will, Sloane....yeah, I like all of them :)
Margot
kicking it old school - February 19, 2005 11:51 PM (GMT)
I love Sydney too, I think she's great, but, there's something about Jack that really draws me to him, not sure what. I loved him straight away, from the moment he had a go at Danny about asking permission to propose to Sydney! And my heart breaks for him everytime he gets that sad but not really showing it face :tear:, like when he was watching the video clip of Sydney's mum saying "Jack Bristow is a fool" or something like that. Not sure about Sloane, on the one hand he's evil, but on the other he really cares for people, like his wife and Sydney. I started feeling really bad for him because of his wife and that whole situation with the alliance wanting him to kill her. Vaughn is pretty cool, but only really has one expression - kind of puzzled! Will is so sweet, Dixon is lovely. Francie is the only one I find a bit annoying. I'm not sure why though!
Margot C - February 19, 2005 11:55 PM (GMT)
Yeah, Francie's okay but she doesn't get a whole lot to do.
I love when Jack's being a daddy to Syd, so sweet :)
I think that's whats so great about Sloane - he isn't the typical two-dimensional 'evil character'. He has real emotions, he cares about people, he has some of the same problems that 'normal' people face and at the same time he's this terrifying guy who could kill you before you even realise that he's a bad guy.

I started downloading S3 last night, decided to finally get back into it :) Think I’ll need the second half of S2 as a reminder though, I completely lost track towards the end and missed the last few.
There again I might just download 1,2 and 3 – It would be good to own them all on a hard drive
(1.75 of 7.74 gig complete so far  )

Season two was sitting in my room waiting for me when I got home, which was a lovely surprise  much faster delivery than last time.
I've watched the first ep, and woah, so emotional. I was not geared up for something that would be so difficult to watch. It made me cry, twice (first time properly crying watching Alias). A single tear for Dixon at the beginning, that whole speech was absolutely heartbreaking :tear:. Then the whole Will situation just had me in floods of tears . It's so dramatic. I love it.

Have now watched the first 3 and a half episodes of season 2. This show just keeps getting better. I'm really creeped out/intrigued by Sydney's mum. I'm sure she's up to something, but at the same time, I get the feeling that she just wants to know her daughter. Perhaps I'm being too naive :p. I'm still so sad for Will, he's being so brave. I'm really warming to Sloane  which is weirding me out. I love Jack as much as ever, Francie's still irritating me, Sydney's still great, and is it just me or is Sark somewhat sexy?
kicking it old school - February 24, 2005 10:29 PM (GMT)
Have now watched up to the end of the 5th episode. No idea why I keep updating everyone, perhaps I just like the sound of my own... er, typing? Well, actually, I like reviewing them cause it makes me think about it more. Anyhoo... I'm so upset by Sydney and Jack, they're right back at sqaure one with the distrust & the not talking. I think Sydney's being a bit harsh on him, but then again, I'm blinded by my total adoration of Jack! The whole training children to be spies is *very* creepy though. I'm happier for Will now, he seems to be doing ok and Francie's not annoying me so much (and she painted the restaurant the colour Jack advised, yay) And, how much is Marshall the funniest thing ever on tv?

I was exactly the same. At the same time, I find Irina terrifying, but I also desperately want her to be as "good" (for lack of a better word) as she's saying she is.

Wow. I've watched up to the end of passage pt1 and wow. wowowowow. I think it just might be my favourite episode so far. I love the interaction between the three of them all together - kind of redefines a dysfunctional family. Jesus, that episode was amazing. I was actually buzzing at the end of it, and lost for words. The bit with the three of them in a row shooting everyone else - so great. I'm squeaking with excitement as I type this. I love this show so much. Then the three of them walking away with U2 (I *think*) playing in the background. Wow. Could this show get any better?
Oh, and I'm in love with Sark
kicking it old school - February 27, 2005 04:12 PM (GMT)
Ok, I went crazy this morning and watched from passage pt2 to the end of A dark turn. Talk about emotional rollercoaster! So at the moment it looks like Irina has betrayed them properly this time, but I really hope she hasn't, I'd really warmed to her, and I really wanted Sydney to have her mum back. I was a trusting fool, just like Sydney and Jack  ....unless she's setting Sloane up? The alliance is destroyed, but Sark & Sloane are still at large, which was kind of expected. It seemed way too convenient that they could take down the whole alliance in one sweep like that, especially as Sydney got the info about server 47 from Sark! I love Marshall more than ever, he's absolutely hilarious and so sweet, he's my 2nd favourite character (after Jack, obviously!). I was terrified when he was kidnapped. :fear: There's been a severe lack of Will in the last few episodes, that was their only flaw really. He had the odd scene, but I'd like to see more of him. Oh, and Francie's dead? Wasn't really too sad about that one :whistling:
I'm not really sure if I'm that keen on the Sydney/Vaugn relationship, it doesn't seem to w**k for me, don't know why. And aww, Dixon :tear: I felt so sad for him.
A question: how did Sloane find out that Sydney and Jack were double agents? Has it been said already, or am I going to find out soon? If it's already been said on the show, sorry for asking! After over 5 solid hours of Alias I'm a bit sleepy
"I am my thoughts" - February 27, 2005 05:06 PM (GMT)
Well done on the marathon! Not really surprised that you've become that addicted right about now, as at this point Alias really becomes something special.
The whole double agent thing will explain itself eventually. Stop looking for spoilers ;)
