Title: Coming To Terrestrial?
star_fury - January 23, 2005 03:44 PM (GMT)
Does anybody know when battlestar galactica is coming to terrestrial Tv and which channel it will be on?

I don't think it will be heading to terrestrial. Sky helped finance BSG :)

I still wouldn't be too surprised to see it turn up terrestrially at some point though. It's an easy way of Sky recouping some of their outlay. Give it 12 months

I'm not sure James. There really isn't a precedent atm. Sky make/finance so little shows, I don't think any have made it to terrestrial yet.

There's sense in them not letting it hit terrestrial for a certain period of time, but after that it gets counter-productive. Flogging the series to terrestrial 12 months down the line gets you 1) Cash, and 2) A great incentive to terrestrial only viewers to get Sky before Season 2 airs.
There isn't really a precedent as you say, that being said, it's possibly the first show that they've invested in to any great degree that suits itself to terrestrial television.

I wonder if they might push to get it released on dvd and make their money back that way before releasing it to terrestrial channels?
Persephone - January 23, 2005 08:21 PM (GMT)
I guess it comes down to whether Sky's investment only covered their first run exclusivity, (is that a word   )
But yeah I take your point, hopefully a terrestrial channel would be able to make a deal with Sky. But at this point, I'd seriously doubt it would go the Beeb, maybe channel 5
Crichton Kicks - January 23, 2005 08:27 PM (GMT)
As I understand it, Sky's investment was quite substantial, to the point of their attitude towards the show counting for something in the decision on Season 2.
I'd imagine that if Sky really didn't want the show to hit terrestrial TV then that's pretty much what would happen, it wouldn't.

To be quite honest, I hadn't realised that Sky had put in so much money. I guess it's going to depend on how hungry for money they are. Okay, there does seem to be a decline in interest in Cult shows, by the public atm, but there are still a few out there, who could be tempted to get Sky just to see BSG.
It's true, Sky could make a hell of a lot of money selling it on to say channel 5, but loads more Sky subsciptions could halt that.

If nothing else though, Sky should be applauded for taking the chance. The Beeb and the rest of the terrestrial channels should take note.

I have to say that I didn't even know Sky had put any money into BSG.I agree with Angel Sky should be commended for that & The BBC should follow this example.
I suppose if Sky have exclusive rights due to part financing the series the most likely Channel would be five, since I believe they are owned by the same company? Something to do with Murdoch?
goth willow fan - January 25, 2005 03:03 PM (GMT)
Certainly I know at one point Murdoch was going to buy heavily into five, but I'm not sure if that ever actually happened.
His plan was for five to become a terrestrial feeder for Sky Digital, sort of a "look what Sky One viewers saw last year folks" channel.

That would have been quite good. At least Sky tend to treat genre television with a little respect.
