Stargate Atlantis co-star Rainbow Sun Francks ("Aiden Ford") will be a recurring character in the show's second season, executive producer and series co-creator Brad Wright told GateWorld. The change in status means that Francks will not appear in every episode, and will not be listed in the show's opening credits.

But the new season will start with major developments for Ford, a character many fans regard as under-developed in Season One. "We have plans for him as a recurring character in an arc that extends through at least the first part of Season Two," Wright said.

Francks himself was looking forward to the coming season when GateWorld spoke with him in London in November. "Season Two is going to be fun. From what I've spoken to the writers about, there are some very interesting things in line for Ford," he said. "'If you weren't interested in Ford before, you definitely will be,' is all I can say. I can't let any of it out because it's all speculation right now, but what we've spoken about is extremely exciting."

To fill Ford's shoes the producers will also add a new regular character, Ronon Dex, to the mix (story). Dex is currently being cast.

Actor Paul McGillion ("Carson Beckett") will also become a regular cast member next season, Wright confirmed. "In fact, that's how we thought of him most of last year," he said. "It just wasn't formalized yet."

Great news about Paul McGillion though :thumbsup:

No loss there :)

But hurrah on McGillion - he's the one character on Atlantis I've liked the most, and I was surprised he wasn't in the credits from the start (from what I remember my copies of the first 2 episodes didn't have the opening credits for some reason...)

Pilot episodes rarely have opening titles/credits ;)

I was surprised also though. The amount of screentime he got in the opening two-parter I assumed he was a regular character. At least they've seen the light now though. The characters on Atlantis are growing on me for the most part. Mckay's the obvious favourite, and both Shepherd and Beckett are coming along nicely. Shame about Ford though, at least they're not carrying on with the pretense like Enterprise continues to do :rolleyes:

Episode titles yes, but I can't think of any other premiere stories that had no actual opening credits, as opposed to:

Buffy, Angel, all the Star Treks, The Shield, Six Feet Under, CSI, 24, SG-1, Babylon 5....

all of which had credits - Atlantis was the first series that I've seen which omitted them! :)

Can't remember if mine had actual credits or not now. Presumably not. Hmmm.....

I can't remember if it was on Rising or Hide and Seek, but I seem to remember one episode having the series title/logo just flash up on screen at one stage in lieu of the credits...

My copy has credits for the premiere;

That was what I was thinking of when I mentioned the one episode with the title flashing up on-screen :)

And to be fair, those credits don't tell you who the actors actually play :)

Sounds a bit contrary to me. He's not going to be in it as much, but at the same time they're going to do a lot more with him.

He was definitely underdeveloped in series one, but I do quite like the character. That said, I do approve of series having a large and varied cast. Why should every character appear in every episode? I think this was one of the things that DS9 really proved. They never felt the need to put sisko (for example) in every ep, and were quite confident to spend a double ep looking at the relationship between Odo and Garak, or Worf and Martok.
