Title: 4.02 What Was Lost Pt 1
Description: Sacrifice
willowroolz - January 9, 2005 09:15 PM (GMT)

As Jool and D'Argo are reunited with the remains of Moya's crew, Jool's archeology background is uncovered once more. Although it's unlikely she'll wind up back in Grunchlik's freezer this time, the stakes at this dig are just as high, enough so that The Old Woman may sacrifice John's life to protect them...assuming Commandant Grayza doesn't capture him first.

I had forgotten about the deleted scene in Crichton kicks that they use in the previously section on this episode.
I remember when I first saw it I was thinking what an earth did I miss and then read what happended in the magazine.
Its a shame they didn't have time to fit it in because it is quite an important scene between Scorpy Braca and Grayza showing what has happened to Scorpy's position.
I really like these episodes, love the planet it looks great and the tunnels wonderfully shot especially the cliff scenes.
Poor D'Argo, he gets close to Jool and she still doesn't defend him. What has been going on between them
It is nice to see Jool's enthusiasm for the dig and also Chi's apathy towards it considering what she went through. We see John's disappointment that they haven't heard from Aeryn :tear:
We still don't know what to make of the old woman, firstly inducing Crichton's visions and then deciding that he must die now he knows too much - a great scene by the way. The old woman hallucinations in the red cloaks are very freaky!
The Oo-Nii creature does look like a B movie monster  and its really funny when he starts talking.
Love the idea of Scorpy being turned into a lap dog even if really bizarre.
And Grayza bad bad woman although can't say that I blame her, poor John can he possibly be any more abused.
Great episode full of action wish the rest of the season was like this

I like this season too. Maybe it's because I knew it was the last one? I don't know. I just remember enjoying most of the episodes :D
laughitupfuzzball - January 25, 2005 11:01 AM (GMT)
The arc based episodes I loved it was the stand alone stories that just disappointed me in this season

That confused me when I first saw it on the beeb too. I was glad they included it in full on the dvd though, it's a very good scene, and I love Braca's superior attitude towards Scorpy in it.
I've never been entirely sure whether I like this episode or not. It (and part 2) has quite a different feel to it from any other episode in the series. The location w**k in Marubra is gorgeous, and the episode looks great (the show always made fabulous use of locations, such as Scorpy's Gammak base and here), but I can't dispel the thought that it's a bit messy in the execution.
But then it's done this way deliberately. There's quite an effort here to throw the viewer off balance, especially where the old woman is concerned and the way in which both she and Grayza manipulate Crichton. The editing at times seems to be off-kilter on purpose, and it works very well, especially where the Oo-nii is concerned.
Am I the only one who got freaked when the Oo-nii started talking? :fear:
And what exactly is Commandant Cleavage? She's not Sebacean, is she? Her colouring makes her almost look part Nebari
And what about that "titty swipe" (that's what they called it on set, don't blame me), the ability that turns men to putty...?
I love the scene where she's in the bath, the look on Braca's face is priceless when she tells him to come closer and kneel
The relationship between D'Argo and Jool is nicely done, stretching back to Revenging Angel and beyond, it's nice to see that it wasn't simply forgotten about, and equally nice that it wasn't played upon to the point of being blatantly obvious. That makes it doubly upsetting to see how Jool really views Luxans - even though it's absolutely in keeping with her character. Poor D'Argo.
Chi's momentary flash of jealousy is well played too, as is the continuation of the emotional fallout of her experiences away from Moya.
And D'Argo finally names his ship, Lo'La, after his wife Lo'Laan.
Jool's Interion compatriots aren't the friendliest bunch in the universe. They appear to look down upon all and sundry, especially Vella, who doesn't even bother to try and conceal her contempt for both Crichton and D'Argo.
The planet on which her archaeological dig is based, Arnesk, had once been the home of a mysterious order of priests, who had somehow managed to maintain peace between the Peacekeepers and the Scarrans for over 500 generations. Vella has uncovered two of the three Darnaz probes that had made the planet uninhabitable and killed the inhabitants over 12,000 cycles beforehand.
And yet the old woman enquires why, if the priests had been killed, are there no skeletons? For some reason she seems determined to stop Vella uncovering the third probe, and works her mojo on Crichton, giving him visions of the past (and what looks like a particularly unpleasant animal sacrifice).
Crichton never really seems to be completely in control in this episode. If it's not the old woman blowing mysterious powders in his face or sticking insect remains up his nose, it's Grayza, who has suddenly begun to realise why Scorpius thinks Crichton is so important.
Her ways of gaining Crichton's knowledge, though, are quite different from Scorpy's, seducing him by her slightly less than honest means. Poor John doesn't seem to have a clue what's going on.
And then there's Scorpius himself, subjected to his own Aurora Chair (much to Braca's amusement) and with his coolant rod replaced by one which turns him into little more than a subservient animal, it appears that the Peacekeepers don't take kindly to their orders being ignored and one of their command carriers being destroyed.
In the meantime, up in orbit, the Elack and her Pilot are slowly dying, while Rygel looks on and Sikozu tinkers with Crichton's Farscape module and takes it down to the surface to warn the others after detecting a Peacekeeper transmission.
And there's still no sign of Aeryn.
I think the series' switch from a standard 4:3 aspect ratio to 16:9 gives it an even more impressive look and scale and Rowan Woods makes brilliant use of it.

Yes, I think it was done on purpose to give it more tension, keep us guessing until the end :)

I think I much preferred this epsiode (and the second part) this time round, probably because of things that happen later ;)
