Title: 4.01 Crichton Kicks
willowroolz - January 9, 2005 09:13 PM (GMT)
My name is John Crichton. An astronaut. Three years ago, I got shot through a wormhole. I'm in a distant part of the universe, aboard this living ship of escaped prisoners...my friends. I've made enemies...powerful, dangerous. Now all I want is to find a way home, to warn Earth. Look upward -- and share -- the wonders I've seen.Mad scientists, pirates, critters, secret formulas, shootouts, musical DRDs, mystic powers, graffiti, hitchhikers with weird hair, and of course lots of gooey stuff: it's just another typical day in the Uncharted Territories for John Crichton. Or it would be, if he had any idea where Moya and his friends were, and a way to get there...

I really like this season opener, its totally different from others John is alone and bonding with a ailing Leviathon and has a new little buddy in 1812.
He has finally had the time to w**k out his wormhole theories drawing all over the ship and seems pretty much borderline insane. Great acting by Ben he could easily carry an episode on his own but then we get the introduction of Sikozu crashing in splendidly as John is enjoying something like Raslak quickly protecting 1812 in his arms.
Sikozu, I have got to say I'm not too keen on her character. Like the idea that she has to hear a language to learn it but it doesn't really w**k very well, how she is able to communicate so quickly from a very small vocabulary doesn't add up.
The idea of harvesting parts of the leviathon is a good storyline and because of our love for Pilot I immediately sympathised with Elack, John's scenes with her are very touching.
You don't mind if we fight for you - bless.
Not too keen on the Grudek pirates but they serve the story and John's Klingon is hilarious as they are very similar.
The Brindz hound doesn't quite convince but it does make for some great scenes, Sikozus ability to climb walls and shift her gravity also the later scenes where John traps it and looks quizzically as it keeps missing the whole
Love Chi & Rygels re-introduction, Chi's wilder look is great and she portrays her emotional wounds from her time away well. So we have a new beacon the price on their heads has now gone up and they have new hunters - as if life was ever going to be easy for them.
Nice to see Chi in action slapping Sikozu around as she sees her possibly treacherous actions. We learn that her premonitions have now changed into seeing the present slowed down and John finally takes this seriously.
| QUOTE |
John: I'm not obsessed. Rygel: Wormhole, Aeryn, Earth, Aeryn, Scorpious, Aeryn, I'm out of fingers. Want me to keep counting on hers? (holding Sikozu's severed hand) |
Rygel is spot on of course, John has been alone obsessing over both and is still doing so imagining conversations with a now weird looking pregnant Aeryn, he is not ready to move on.
| QUOTE |
Severed heads, severed hands. It's a motif. |
A great reference to Durkas head  as Rygel is made to look for Sikozu's hand.
Wonderful ending on the ropes with Chi's ability to slow time down, as ever the plan doesn't quite w**k the way they intended but they get the neccessary results. Great shots
Great ending to the 1812 overture with the painted DRD playing with John, what a cute couple.
A great season opener, again great to see that hideous beard coming off, and credit to the actors in this we don't yet miss the rest of the cast.

| John: Once upon a time I was happy here, a little on the lonely side but that's okay because Winona only had to start cooking fires, you know, fire whoosh, fire. Module's out of fuel, so it's not going anywhere. So I'm workin' like a mofo and everything is finally coming together on these crates here till you smash through, pissing me off just a little bit. |
I agree, Alex, this is a brilliant season premiere, very different from the others but equally as good.
I like the way the episode starts, fooling us into believing that Crichton has been sitting in the Farscape 1 module long enough for that beard to grow, trying to convince Pilot to let him back on board Moya, when in fact he is actually talking to the 350+ cycle old Pilot of a dying Leviathan called Elack. It's very cleverly done.
It's an awful beard though, even if it is real
Externally, Elack is subtly different from Moya, which adds to the air of uncertainty that laces the episode. The settings are familiar, but the differences are there, from the Pilot's ageing appearance and different gender, to the flaking corridor walls of the dying Elack.
I actually really like Sikozu. She's another of Farscape's wonderful cast of devious characters, and Raelee Hill plays her with just about the right amount of tongue in cheek long-suffering self-righteousness. Her ability to change her centre of gravity comes in handy, and her natural healing also comes in, erm, "handy". Added to that, once she lets her hair down she is a very sexy young woman, with a wicked smile and those green contacts are quite startling.
Gotta love Crichton calling her Sputnik though
| QUOTE |
Sikozu: This is a dying ship. There shouldn't be anyone on board a dying ship. John: Absolutely correct, Tinkerbell. Okay, my turn. Who, what, when, where, why, and how? |
Of course, her reasons for being aboard Elack are unravelled as the episode progresses, and her motives are constantly in question, especially when she attempts to secure a deal with one of the raiding Grudeks using Scarran currency (seeds of this season's arc laid right here).
Once Chi and Rygel arrive the episode kicks up a gear. Pip, in particular, has scars from their time apart that run particularly deep, her visions having landed her in big trouble, under arrest, tortured and raped, she is a wounded character here. And I'm not too sure about Crichton's handling of her in the scene where she tells all, quite violent.
The evolution of her visions, not sure how far ahead this was planned, but slowing down time is certainly useful in this episode.
Fluffy, on the other hand, is quite hilarious in this episode, from the moment he declares that Chi is annoyed because the new wanted beacon has placed a higher price on his head, to his speech to Crichton about his feelings for Aeryn:
| QUOTE |
John: Did she say anything to you before she left? Rygel: Oh, Crichton. For once listen. When a woman who is your wife, your lover - or a slave you purchased to be your wife or lover - leaves you repeatedly, take the hint. John: Well that was the plan, but you know how my plans go. |
And then there's his mutterings about Crichton not appreciating his worth in a crisis, and the laugh out loud moment where he makes very little effort to catch a falling Crichton, wondering why he's bothering before observing "I tried" :lmao:
I love the scenes with Harvey and Aeryn too, mainly because they are such a contrast to the darkness of the rest of the episode, further providing proof of Crichton's state of mind (which is verging on unhinged for much of the episode), and also because Claudia Black looks fabulous, pregnant or otherwise.
| QUOTE |
John: I'm not coming here anymore. Aeryn: Why not? John: It doesn't change anything and it makes me sad. |
Ben Browder does a terrific job yet again. Crichton's berating of the Grudeks in Klingon is hilarious (thank God it wasn't D'Argo who said it, or that could've been a whole different problem  ), and his affection for Elack's Pilot is really quite touching.
He also gets to deal with the Brindz Hound, a fearsome creature despatched by the Grudeks to hunt him and Sikozu down. I love his dance in front of it, trying to lure it in to the airlock
And a new star is born in the arrival of 1812, the pistol-packing, overture-playing DRD who has kept John company all this time. Awww.
Elack and her Pilot's decision to leave the Sacred Ground in order to rejoin Crichton, Chi and Rygel with their other companions is very sad, foresaking the right to die in the place they had dreamed of.
| QUOTE |
| Elack's Pilot: No dream is guaranteed, Commander. The price of age is, we learn to accept. |
A great start to a terrific season. There's a freshness and exuberance about it that's indicative of a show brimming with confidence, flair and invention. It's so sad, then, that it is the beginning of the end.

Violence does not equal sexual tension. ;)

She's a good character, hmmm, going on this episode only she gets on my nerves and didn't really get my attention, if she had died at the end I wouldn't have cared. ]
Thats just my opinion of course

It wasn't that violent. There relationship is a very physical one for friends, it is typical of their relationship.

Sikozu is absolutely essential to the events of this season. She also has the distinct advantage of not being either Zhaan or Jool, imo.
More than that I won't say, cos it'd be spoilery

Sorry, I just find this kind of agressive attitude towards women from our leading protagonist a bit unsettling, that's all. :(

Nice reviews you guys
I think I better spend a little more time thinking of something that you might have missed.
Nope. Can't think of anything :D

I think this is the best opening Ep of the lot!
Ben Browder holds the whole thing together despite over half the cast not being in it, and Rygel and Chiana are both superb, esp Buckwheat.
When he tells Crichton to take the hint, i almost rutured myself laughing, and when he 'tried' to catch Crichton!
Sikozu is an almost fully rounded character from the off(unlike Jools), and her spitefullness reminds of Dark Zhaan(bad Zhaan, naughty Zhaan :innocent: ), who i miss a lot! :tear:
But the guys who steal the show for me are Elack, what a majestic proud brave old girl, and 1812, who, singlehandedly, makes up for all the cute, stupid and meaningless robots we've had over the years in scifi

I love the way that John watches Sikozu's shuttle crash land in the hanger, he just stands there, watching it and sipping on his moonshine, only moving enough to save himself and 1812. He doesn't even look too suprised :p
And Harvey in a Hawaiian shirt. Need I say more? :lmao: :lmao:

It's his reaction to the women walking by that cracks me up
Crichton Kicks - February 21, 2005 08:59 PM (GMT)
I rewatched this one last night (seeing as I saw it when it originally aired on the Beeb ). Love it. The story itself, does absolutely nothing for me, but the episode's made by the character moments.
1812, the crash scene, Harvey Five-0
It was an extremely surreal opener to the season, with the crew seemingly scattered to the four corners. It was a relief to eventually see Sparky and Pip back aboard with Crichton.
I liked Sokozu, definitely a better first impression than Jool's. She looks like she'll add a new dimension to the show.
Im_Here - February 10, 2006 05:40 PM (GMT)
to me this is probably the best season opener as youre still left guessing where everyone is and what there upto.
the story was hilarious too, loved 1812 probably the best drd after one eye  liked how sikozu was introduced and how john hardly flinched when her ship crashed into the boxes, its like he was saying 'ive seen it before and im not bothered' sikozu seemed to me in this episode as jools replacement, a new rival for chianna (we also see jool and chianna get along in next ep) but as we learn more about sikozu we learn she just cant be trusted at all! :lmao:
Great episode
