Title: More On Browder's Role

Executive producer Brad Wright answered many nagging questions about the future of Stargate SG-1 in today's installment of Chicago Tribune columnist Maureen Ryan's "The Watcher" -- including new details on actor Ben Browder's new character.
"He's the F-302 pilot (our Earth-designed space fighter) that led the squadron that fought Anubis in Antarctica," Wright revealed. The climactic battle took place in the Season Seven finale, "Lost City, Part 2." "He was badly injured when his fighter crashed, nearly killed -- but was was promised a place on SG-1 if he made it back to fighting form." Executive producer Robert C. Cooper recently said that the character has played a role in SG-1's past, which will be shown on-screen through flashbacks (story). The character's intended name has not yet been cleared through legal channels.
What about comparisons made by some between Browder and SG-1 co-star Michael Shanks, who many say look alike? The two characters won't be related, and "once we've shaved Ben's head it will be far easier to tell them apart," Wright joked. "We'll come up with something. I'm not worried about it."
The producer is also unconcerned with comparisons that might arise between the new character and John Crichton, the character Browder played for four years on Farscape -- originally Stargate's companion series on Friday nights when the show moved to The SCI FI Channel in 2002. "SG-1 is a unit of the U.S. Air Force and so he should be an officer, but it's a very different show. ... I think Claudia [Black, 'Vala'] and Ben should bring a few Farscape fans aboard, but that's not why we're doing this. They're great actors."
"Claudia has already proven herself on our show," Wright said. Black appears in the upcoming Season Eight episode "Prometheus Unbound," and will appear alongside Browder in a 5-episode arc in early Season Nine (story).
Wright also confirmed to the Tribune that Browder's deal as a series regular means that he will appear in the entire, 20-episode season -- and, should the show continue to an astonishing tenth year, Browder would continue as well.
"Season Nine will have a new beginning with a new enemy," Wright said. "I think once you've seen the end of Season Eight you'll understand why we're doing that. Yes, I hope there will be crossover between the two series [SG-1 and Atlantis]. I have an idea, but I'm still w**king it out."

Sounds interesting.
A tenth season not entirely outside the realms of possibility then. Not bad considering every season since the 5th has been anticipated (at the time) to be the final one

It does sounds pretty good, doesn't it. I'm totally divided though. Part of me wants them to do something new and different with this character, so you can't draw comparisons with Crichton. Another part of me would be happier to see an exact copy of Crichton at SG1. Crichton was such a good character, and it would be nice to see the character in a different environment.
I'm sure they'll will go for the first option, and I have faith that it will probably w**k quite well.
Series 9 sounds like its shaping up nicely though. I'm glad they are adding new elements, and not just letting the series peter out. I can see SG1 running for another 3-4 years now.

They're putting the pieces into place aren't they ?? Covering their bases so to speak.
The driving factor behind SG1 was for a long time RDA/O'Neill. Over the past couple of seasons that's changed, and the cast is now a lot more ensemble than it used to be. In fact this probably started when Shanks (temporarily) left and Corin Nemec came into the show.
The situation at the moment kind of reminds me of that facing the X Files in seasons 8 and 9. Duchovny and Anderson desperate to leave, eventually securing reduced roles (or no role at all), with new blood bought in to carry the show.
The mistake that the XF made was to cling on to the elements that were the original cornerstones of the show. Scully for example, during season 9 was shoehorned into numerous episodes just to give her something to do and show the audience that she was still there.
MGM on the other hand seem quite content to play into RDA's and AT's needs to be elsewhere.
The acquisition of Claudia Black and now Ben Browder could easily be a masterstroke, securing many more years of SG1. I'll be interested to see how next season goes, if Browder can carry the show, it'll last for some time yet methinks.

Considering how much exposure the rest of SG1 got in the episodes, (Jackson aside), she had to ;)

The addition of any of the fine actors from Farscape can only be a plus to any show

browder will be great in SG-1 as he was great in Farscape. it will also take the pressure of RDA and his dodgy knee :doctor:
the show creators said in one of the DVD commentries they have enough material for 10 seasons, so with any luck

BEAU BRIDGES JOINS THE CAST OF 'STARGATE SG-1'
MORE STARS BURST THROUGH THE 'GATE'
Beau Bridges, Mitch Pileggi and Lou Gossett Jr. Join the Casts Of SCI FI's 'Stargate SG-1' and 'Stargate Atlantis'
NEW YORK -- February 7, 2005 -- Hot on the heels of the exceptional January premieres of 'Stargate SG-1' and 'Stargate Atlantis,' SCI FI Channel and MGM Television Entertainment have scored a casting hat trick, welcoming three-time Emmy winner Beau Bridges, Oscar winner Lou Gossett, Jr. and sci-fi favorite Mitch Pileggi to the 'Stargate' family.
Bridges will join the cast of 'Stargate SG-1' as General Hank Landry, the new head of Stargate Command. When Jack O'Neill is promoted to oversee Homeworld Security, he hand-picks Landry to be his successor. In addition to being committed to a regular role on 'SG-1,' Bridges will also cross over to appear in a few episodes of 'Stargate Atlantis.' Gossett will also join the cast of 'SG-1' in a recurring role as a Jaffa leader who vies with Teal'c for political control of the new Jaffa nation.
Bridges and Gossett join returning cast members Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge and Michael Shanks, and newest team member Ben Browder, who plays Lieutenant Colonel Cameron Mitchell. With these fresh casting additions, 'Stargate SG-1' - currently the longest-running sci-fi drama on American television - is primed for even greater success as it enters its ninth original season.
X-Files alumnus Mitch Pileggi will take on 'Stargate Atlantis' in a recurring role as a hard-nosed colonel who butts heads with Dr. Weir (Torri Higginson) and Major Sheppard (Joe Flanigan).
Production on both 'Stargate SG-1' and 'Stargate Atlantis' is set to begin in March 2005 for summer premieres on SCI FI. |

Interesting casting choices!
Though I must stop reading all these threads as I don't want to read anything that will spoil the rest of the current seasons for myself :D
laughitupfuzzball - February 8, 2005 01:26 PM (GMT)
Yes I should have put Spoiler up really sorry
melian - February 8, 2005 01:37 PM (GMT)
No!! I didn't mean for you to do that, just that I should try to resist looking into all the threads with info on the new series for both shows :(
It's all me, I have NO willpower ;)
laughitupfuzzball - February 8, 2005 01:40 PM (GMT)
Ahh, I have none either
melian - February 8, 2005 04:27 PM (GMT)
And guess what? I'm back again :lmao:
It's like a disease. There should be some sort of group support system. Spoilers Anonymous or something.
"Hi there. My name is Karen, and I'm addicted to spoilers"
laughitupfuzzball - February 8, 2005 04:37 PM (GMT)
:lmao:
So why do like spoilers so much
because you can't sleep until you know more, more, more
Its the little tempting teasers that say 'read me' 'read me'
 yup I'm the same
melian - February 8, 2005 04:57 PM (GMT)
You promise yourself that each time will be your last, but by now you are no longer even fooling yourself. Somebody stop me!!!!
Crichton Kicks - February 8, 2005 06:27 PM (GMT)
I'd heard the Beau Bridges one rumoured last week, but everytime I tried to confirm it with Gateworld the damned site was down
I think all three castings are adding a massive touch of class to both shows. Bridges and Gossett Jr. are fantastic acquisitions and I've always loved Pileggi's performances on the XF.
It certainly looks like next year's Stargate is going to be interesting.
Sad to hear of O'Neil's promotion to Homeworld Security though, presumably that means RDA's role is even more limited next year :(
That being said though, one of my criticisms levelled against the XF in it's ninth year was that they just had Scully around for the sake of it....
laughitupfuzzball - February 8, 2005 06:52 PM (GMT)
This is what Ben had to say in his interview with Gateworld re RDA:
| QUOTE |
BB: It is a chance to be different. But the idea that you can replace an existing character on the show is absurd. You can't replace Richard Dean Anderson. It's impossible. And whatever the circumstances are that involve him being less involved, I think it's advantageous from a production standpoint to have four members of a team going through a gate instead of three. And I think it facilitates the stories, as well. I think at a certain point you need that.
GW: So you believe you're going in to facilitate the stories, not nearly as much as replacing Richard Dean Anderson.
BB: Well, that's how I view my job. You're talking to a guy who has not been involved in a show for a year. I'm not writing the show. I'm not producing the show. I'm not directing the show. I'm coming in to do a job. And what I hope is that it's going to contribute to the process. You cannot come into a situation and try to remake, rearrange what exists and what works. You try to find a way to add, not change. |
Crichton Kicks - February 8, 2005 07:00 PM (GMT)
Still sounds ominous :(
Still, besides that, it sounds like year 9 could be great
