Title: Ten Top Stories

ken1701e - May 15, 2004 07:38 AM (GMT)
In The Current issue of SFX magazine they list the ten stories of DR WHO that people really should not miss, they are:

AN UNEARTHLY CHILD
CITY OF DEATH
SPEARHEAD FROM SPACE
THE ARK IN SPACE
GENESIS OF THE DALEKS
PYRAMIDS OF MARS
THE DEADLY ASSASSIN
THE TALONS OF WENG-CHAING
KINDA
CAVES OF ANDROZANI

Would anyone argue with that list and would anyone like to recommend ones they would rather see there??

Hmm, whilst I've heard of them all I can only remember watching two of those Kendo, the last two, KINDA and THE CAVES OF ANDROZANI. I'd have had RESURRECTION OF THE DALEKS and possibly EARTHSHOCK in there though :(

Actually, I'd argue 'An Unearthly Child' - while the first episode is indeed a classic, and one that must be seen, the following three are a very bland exercise in monotony. In it's place I would add a Troughton - while it would probably be Tomb or The Mind Robber, in a prefect world I'd recommend Power of the Daleks and Fury from the Deep :D

What is interesting, however, is to compare the SFX choices to fan surveys:

DWM EPISODE SURVEY (1998) - in chronological order (as I've not got the proper list with me)

The Evil of the Daleks
The Tomb of the Cybermen
The Web of Fear
Genesis of the Daleks (Winner)
Pyramids of Mars
The Robots of Death
The Talons of Weng-Chiang
City of Death
The Caves of Androzani
Remembrance of the Daleks

OUTPOST GALLIFREY SURVEY (2003) - in 'top 10' order
10 The Web of Fear
9 Inferno
8 The Evil of the Daleks
7 The Deadly Assassin
6 The Robots of Death
5 City of Death
4 Genesis of the Daleks
3 Pyramids of Mars
2 The Caves of Androzani
1 The Talons of Weng-Chiang

However, in the long run I'd not recommend people watch early episodes prior to the new series - Who has a stigma for being made on a low budget, and for all the 'recommended stories' I could find at least one thing which someone is likely to pick up on (The rat in Talons, and the Magma Beast in Androzani).

Let them come into the new series fresh and unprejudiced, and then once they enjoy it let them watch the cheap old series :)

I think SFX didnt use any story that was not avaliable on dvd or video and a lot of the 2nd Doctors are 'missing' and therefore never released

It may be cheap but I think <providing you look past that> the majority of the stories were well written and are still great to watch today
