Cult | News | 17 December 2004 Star Trek: Generations Review: It's the special edition of the one where Kirk dies.
Corset-lovers rejoice! Star Trek: Generations is being re-released on DVD in one of those super-duper extra special editions.
In fact, this release really does deliver on the extras. There are absolutely masses of them - almost too many, in fact.
Some are great, like the deleted scenes (I like watching Kirk doing orbital skydiving as the next geek), and production featurettes (like how the whizzy Stellar Cartography scene was done, complete with wry comments from Patrick Stewart). There's a nice tribute to Original Series designer Matt Jefferies (although, given the context, a date caption on the footage of him might have been a good idea).
As usual, the effects get simply masses of coverage. Now, don't get me wrong, I like watching a model Enterprise crashed into a gravel-covered office carpet as much as the next geek, but there's so much of it! After the third or fourth effects extravaganza, I was imagining the SFX guys forcing the film crew to interview them at batleth point.
Speaking of batleths brings me to Creating 24th Century Weapons. Now, I like a ridiculous replica Klingon knife as much as the next geek, but I didn't need a fifteen minute documentary about the bloke who makes them. And unless you're deeply interested in milling machines, neither do you. An excess of dull, tangential extras like this bring the overall quality of this release down.
Still, it's hardly a damning indictment to say that a DVD has too many extras, and this release is sure to please all hardened Trek fans. Even those with more of a passing interest are sure to like the snazzy, Stellar Cartography-based menu at least, and the film isn't too bad either. |
I can't wait to see the orbital skydiving after hearing about it for sooooooo long :D

The old Section31 website hosted a vid clip of that scene for a while a couple of years back. It's a nice scene. I for one will definitely be picking this one up. Generations is my favourite Star Trek movie, I'm in the minority I know, but it's a rare instance of practically all aspects of the movie coming together and w**king well.

I can't believe you guys haven't already picked up the region 1 since it's been out for nearly three months now and is much cheaper than the region 2 :o

I learn't my lesson with my Region 1 copy of TVH. The packaging isn't half as good. I want my copy to be the definitive edition, in terms of contents and looks

while I don't really like my case for the new special edition of Star Trek generations I'm less fussed by packaging. Instead I would rather save money over fancy packaging. I think in terms of content its going to be virtually identical to the region 2. I went with a region 1 copy because it only cost me about six quid... Yes £6! On release and I've had it for several months. I reckon you'll do well to find the new region 2 upon release for less than £13 which is more than double.

I can wait. A dvd-rip will suffice until it comes down in price. I pickd up the R2 edition of TWOK for £6.99.
The packaging doesn't normally bother me, but the Region 1 versions of the SEs are pretty poor.

The only region 1 special edition I have is generations. Are the region 1 special edition cases normally big chunky, extra thick ones? Because that's what mine is like, it has the same sort of case as my region 1 copy of Die Hard 3.
I also usually wait for DVDs to come down in price before making a purchase. I managed to pick up the region 2 special edition's of the original motion picture and the wrath of Khan for £4.49 each :o ... Pretty good bargain hunting if I do say so myself.

Not bad at all
Yes, the Region 1 releases are the 'chunky' ones. Compared with the Region 2 releases they just look like they've been done on the cheap :(

We'll have to wait till Thursday to get it  So we'll have to fight our way through all of the frantic husbands and other straight boys who have completely forgotten that it was Christmas, and take our chances in the City centre  :fear: :fear:
