Title: Ben Browder To Join Sg-1 For Season 9...

Click!A year ago I wouldn't be sure about this, but now I've actually seen BB in action, I think this could w**k well...

Hmm interesting. This could be very good. I wonder what sort of a role he'll play. Will it just be Crichton in SG1 (which may not be a bad thing)?
I've been thinking they need to expand the cast of SG1, if they're serious about carrying it on.

From what little I've seen of Farscape so far I have to say, this is great news for SG1.
On the other hand, why introduce another character instead of bringing back Jonas Quinn ??

Jeez Angel, you never watched Farscape!?! I always thought you were Mr TV Sci-fi.
You must have heard this before, but its well worth your time getting hold of them. Its the only TV show on a par with B5.
I wouldn't mind seeing Jonas come back either.
Crichton Kicks - December 16, 2004 11:31 PM (GMT)
I made the same mistake with Farscape that I nearly made with B5. I wasn't too impressed with the first few episodes so gave up on it. Unlike B5, I never went back to the show to any great degree. Which is odd, as the odd show that I did catch later on I enjoyed.
I've got them all either on DVD or d/l so, soon as my latest rewatches are out of the way then I'll get around to it

I agree farscape is the only sci-fi series to come anywhere near Babylon Five's greatness!
I think it's fantastic news for stargate that Ben Browder is joining the cast. I had pretty much given up on stargate after last season with Colonel O'Neill's limited role and since I cancelled my Sky subscription I haven't seen this season or stargate Atlantas, I'm now looking forward to catching up knowing Crichton will be in the following season!
I was surprised to read that he's 42! Surely that's not right? He doesn't look that old.
I was never taken with Jonas Quinn's character and felt he was surplus to requirements once Daniel Jackson returned. In my opinion his character falls into Samantha Carter/Daniel Jackson territory and as long as both of those characters are still in the show Jonas Quinn doesn't really offer much to the show.

I didn't want to like Corin Nemec or Jonas Quinn when he first came into the show. Replacing Daniel Jackson/Michael Shanks was a pretty tall order. The character only really began to get interesting when they stopped trying to write him into the DJ role. Towards the middle/end of the season I came to enjoy the character a lot, and Corin Nemec did a fantastic job.
I must admit that I was more than a little disappointed with the way he was simply disgarded when it became clear that Shanks was returning. To be honest, I'm still of the opinion that JQ was the better character.

to be honest I was never that keen on the Daniel Jackson character and I wouldn't really care if he was replaced by Jonas Quinn again. :D Maybe Jonas Quinn could replace Samantha Carter as the article said something about she might be taking a reduced role? Nah...That wouldn't w**k either as they would still need another female role.

I think they'll just give BB more stuff to do to fill the gap. He's definitely talented enough to carry the show if needs be.
AT should be there for part of the season, and I'd still imagine RDA will be there, albeit in a reduced role, but I can't see them recruiting anyone else beyond Mr Browder.

Season 9's apparently going to have some sort of Farscape reunion with Claudia Black now confirming that she'll be appearing in a 5 episode arc next year;

The enthusiastic response of the stars themselves to Stargate SG-1 is unequivocal. Browder is a self-avowed fan who watches the show with his son, and he and co-star Black were joking with fans at recent convention appearances about her ‘new leading man’ Michael Shanks, with Browder wanting to kick his ass in at least a ‘three story arc’. Now Browder will have all season to kick Daniel Jackson’s ass, while Black has been raving about her experiences on set filming “Prometheus Unbound” with Michael Shanks.
“When I guest starred on Stargate I was one of those people who was in awe of everything around me,” Black told TV Zone for its 2004 Yearbook issue. "It was an absolute blast and I was lucky enough to bring with me all that I had learnt as an actress from doing Farscape. It was wonderful to be able to walk onto a new set in a foreign country and be able to get on with the people and do the w**k quickly as well as deliver a solid performance. It was just an amazing experience and the cast and crew were very good to me.
"As soon as I read the script, I fell in love with the character of Vala. She’s a hoot. I thought it would be a wonderful acting challenge for me. What I especially liked was that the action...was very much self contained. It was its own story within the episode, and that allowed me to be introduced into the Stargate world, at a comfortable pace. To top it off, I was w**king mainly with Michael Shanks and the director Andy Mikita, both of whom are extremely kind and giving.
"Fortunately, as with Farscape, the onset environment is both encouraging and collaborative. For example, I noticed that Michael Shanks had a great deal of excellent input and Andy Mikita respected his opinion and was keen to listen to him. As an actor, it’s preferable to be thought of as part of the wheel that turns as opposed to something that makes the wheel stop.
“I can’t tell you what a buzz I got from w**king on Stargate. It allowed me to test my acting wares and get out there in front of the camera and really takes some risks. At one point Michael Shanks said to me, ‘It’s all up to you now’, meaning that I had made some very specific choices and was either going to fall flat on my face, or make it w**k. Andy Mikita was terrific about it. The more he encouraged me, the more I pushed. We were all w**king together to achieve a common goal and I loved every minute of it.”
Black loved it enough to step in for the absent Tapping and accept an ‘at least’ five episode arc in Season 9, with the inherent uncertainty of balancing out her recurring role as Vala with Tapping’s dual commitments to her new baby and to her own recurring role as Carter.

It should invigorate the series to some degree, hopefully. Of course if BB pans out, a tenth season isn't beyond the realms of possibility ;)

An American sci fi series reaching a 10th season????

The only other Sci-Fi show that had the potential for 10 seasons was The XF. Had they dropped GA completely from the 9th season and focused entirely on RP and AG then it had a chance. Instead it was trying to cater for both worlds, often involving Scully for no good reason other than to remind viewers that she was still there.

Here's some more on it, might be spoilery?
Shanks Welcomes Browder To SG-1
Stargate SG-1 star Michael Shanks told SCI FI Wire that he was pleased to hear that Farscape's Ben Browder would be joining the cast of the SCI FI Channel series when it kicks off its ninth season next year. "I'm a big fan of stirring the pot," Shanks said in an interview. "Not that we've become complacent, but I'm a big fan of introducing new elements."
Browder joins the cast as a new character, a seasoned lieutenant colonel who becomes the latest member of SG-1. "We've worked on the show for many years, and we've worked with the same three other actors," Shanks said, referring to co-stars Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge and Richard Dean Anderson. "If it's just those four people on the screen, yeah, we could have a great rapport, but when you introduce a new element you always have that inhale of breath. It's like, 'Ooh, what's this going to do?' That's what guest stars are for. You get complacent when you sit on your butt too long and you w**k with the same group of people. You get used to the dynamic, and you get spoiled and lazy. I think introducing a new element tests you, and it also shakes it up a little bit. And I think, without taking anything too much away, the introduction of a new person is going to up the stakes and sort of have everybody doing a tapdance to figure out where this is all going to fit."
SCI FI no doubt hopes that Browder's presence will both attract new viewers to the show and keep SG-1 fans—particularly those who've bemoaned the decreased presence of Anderson—in the fold.
But Shanks insisted that that end of the equation was not his concern. "Whether Ben brings a SF cachet to the table, ... I don't care," he said. "That's not my business to worry about whether or not he's going to bring in viewers. My job is to find out how we can w**k together and how it's going to be positive and what kinds of good stories we can tell. If his reputation in that regard is spot-on, that's all I care about, and it sounds like he's got a positive reputation."
The remaining new episodes of Stargate SG-1's eighth season kick off Jan. 21, 2005, in a new Friday 8 p.m. ET/PT timeslot, followed by the new episodes of Stargate Atlantis at 9 p.m. and the new original series Battlestar Galactica at 10 p.m. The ninth season of SG-1 will begin airing in the summer.
