Title: 3.18 Fractures
willowroolz - December 14, 2004 09:26 AM (GMT)

The reunion of Moya and Talyn's crews isn't the joyous occasion John expected, but there isn't much time to dwell on it, thanks to a shuttle fleeing the Peacekeepers with a handful of escaped prisoners...

 I always find this episode heartbreaking.
John is so excited about Aeryn's return, running around, picking t-shirts
First the disappointment that the first arrival is more escaped pk prisoners and then he runs to greet the pod bounding like a puppy only to be met with a very cold Aeryn no hugs, no smile its so sad
He doesn't know what to think.
Of course from Aeryns point of view it must be equally hard so see an exact likeness of the man she loved and whom she watched die not long before.
D'Argo doesn't know how to help, he tries to console John and also tries to confront Aeryn.
Then there is the scene between John and Aeryn where he tries to get her to talk about her feelings, "fluffy pink slippers, donald duck, mickey mouse, huey duey and louie"
Clearly she is not ready. The other Crichton reminds him in the holographic message that she takes time.
Aeryn also over hears the other John's voice, she must be seriously freaked out and then they replay the rock scissors paper game :( the hologram fading and leaving just one.
The moment in Lolan with the harpoon when Aeryn slips and says yes it will w**k like the Budong :( back to the events in Green Eyed Monster and then the realisation between them that she is talking about the other John.
Finally the ending where John states his quest to destroy the knowledge that Scorpius has of wormhole technology, the others seem doubtful and Aeryn is the first to join his side. Is this to support him or also to fulfil the other Crichton's wish?
These events are the most striking and poignant to me in this episode, the ending leaves me with a lump in my throat.
The rest of the episode is full of fun, the boolite all the effort Jool and Crais go to putting it back together and then it gets blown to bits all over them
:x the way they both scream, we are used to Jool but not Crais.
Orrhn is priceless, the femme fatale of the puppet world, love the close ups on their eyes. Poor old Rygel such an easy victim, the first thing he does when he arrives is smell her presence, the poor guy is desparate.
Like the Scarran and the Nebari Hubero, shame we didn't see more of her/him.
More of Chiana's forseeing which no one yet quite believes or understands. The peacekeeper tech is annoyingly smug throughout glad he gets shot at the end :)
So the crew is re-united finally, the ship seems crowded now doesn't it  Its great to have them back together with the exception of Stark.

This episode always surprises me. The main storyline, about the second group of escaped prisoners, isn't all that interesting. But the stuff that goes on around it throws up some of the best scenes of the season, imo.

John: "Well, there's a familiar face." Aeryn: "Hello, John." |
Ben Browder, Claudia Black and Anthony Simcoe all do an amazing job, and Lani Tupu's not far behind. The early scene when Talyn's crew arrives on Moya is breathtaking in its simplicity, the way it says so much with so little. Crichton's excitement about seeing Aeryn again radiates from the screen, so much so that you can feel his heart break when things don't go the way he thought they would. Claudia Black's expression is incredible, and Lani Tupu plays the scene in a very understated manner, so as not to take the attention away from Browder. It's a very emotional scene.

Chiana: "Not quite the reunion we were expecting, the other Crichton dead and Stark searching for Zhaan's spirit." D'Argo: "Well, with a single Crichton and Stark missing, perhaps it will restore some sanity to the ship." |
I also love the scene where John and Aeryn are carrying out repairs, and then D'Argo comes in to offer John some advice, another excellent scene.
The final two scenes are the best in the episode, as Talyn John relays his knowledge to Crichton as Aeryn looks on. It's certain that Crichton comes out of it with a very different opinion of his other self, and some of the continuity is nicely done, especially the rock/scissors/paper game.
| QUOTE |
| Talyn John: "It's all in my head. Which means it's in yours, too. Wormholes, A to Z. You've probably already heard what we did with it. And that's just the beginning. You could fry a whole solar system. Heh. Furlow is still out there, somewhere, but for right now the Scarrans are back to square one. Peacekeepers...they're your problem. Look at me. Now look at yourself. You know. Don't let Scorpius crack this, whatever it takes. Okay, I'm gonna piss you off now, man. Be smart. Don't push her. She takes...time. Oh, one more thing. [they tie once more at Rock, Paper, Scissors] Good luck, John." |
And then that final scene, which is just a huge cliffhanger, and feels like something out of The Magnificent Seven (or, as I prefer, Seven Samurai). After all the tension between them during the episode, the moment where Aeryn silently goes to stand at John's side, as he announces he is going to Scorpy's command carrier to stop the half-breed's wormhole research, is a wonderful moment, as is the final close up on John's determined expression.
Other highlights:
Hynerian sex
Androgynous Nebaris :o
The Boolite - what on earth was that body part Crais had in his left hand?
D'Argo flying his ship - how cool is that? The whole action sequence as they chase the transport pod is very exciting.
So, yes, it's an episode that I re-evaluate every time I watch it. It doesn't stick in my memory, mainly because of the lack of interest inspired by the fugitives story, but then when I do watch it the characterisation leaps out of the screen at me, it really is that good.
And the set up for the season finale is spine tingling.

John: "Guys. I don't see another option. Scorpius has the knowledge from my brain, and I'm not going to let him shaft the universe with it." Chiana: "You're all gonna die." John: "You see that one Pip, or you just guessing? We choose our own path. This one is mine. I'm going to the Command Carrier. I'm going to stop Scorpius." |
:o

Its interesting, I wasn't looking forward to watching this purely because it is so heartbreaking :(
The side plot isn't that memorable other than Orrhn as the first female Hynerian we see but the crushing disappointment in this episode hangs heavy, its so sad.
A great episode because of this.
Love Lolan chasing the pod in this ep, the pod doesn't stand a chance. :)

Yeah, spot on. It's the characterisation that really stands out. :)

D'Argo: .......the black of course! I mean, far be it from me to say, but I've always thought that the cut of that green shirt doesn't suit the shape of your body. :lmao:
Although, I must admit that I'd always thought so too :shifty:
Poor John. I hate the way his face just drops when Aeryn walks away from him. And they way it is left to Crais to be the bearer of the bad news.
Not much else to say, except the scene between John and the hologram of his double? Fantastic. And the end scene? Amazing.

Hurrah.
The reuniting of the gang. Seems like it's been longer than half a season, but as well as the concept has worked, it's still nice to reunite the characters. Particularly interesting to see the impact of Crichton II's death on Aeryn, especially with regards to the other Crichton. Not quite the reunion he was expecting.
Interesting guest characters also, I couldn't figure out which one of them was the culprit. Interesting also to see a Scarran that didn't appear to be inherantly evil. In fact, it was amusing to see each of certain characters forming bonds with the respective new found friends.
The conclusion was quite powerful as well, with Crichton's realisation that the only way to move forward is to board the Command Carrier. No surprise in Aeryn being the first to take Crichton's side, I wonder if Crais would have gone along had she not have done

 I'm quite sure Crais was only following Aeryn  moving scene though

It did seem that way.
