| Gideon is basically carrying a First One (or technology) around with him. It could be since the Box is almost/is older than the Shadows, the cure of the Plague may be hidden in it. What exactly is the box, it speaks, has thought, could it be, like in "River of Souls" soul globe, someone or something trapped within it- but unlike RoS, something dark and evil? If the box contains the racial memory of First Ones could it be, that the makers of the box encountered the Drakh Plague, and this is the method of their preservation. With the Box calling the shots of some of the destinations of the Excalibur, will it lead the crew to it's Homeworld? The Change of using Gideon as the voice of the box, may foretell an obsession with the box could develop. Gideon would rely on it too much, the Box with it's nature for lying at certain times and not on others could lead to conflict between Gideon and the other characters. Most notably Galen, as the box foretold the betrayal seen in "The Well of Forever". The Box is very manipulative and may continue using Gideon until he is not needed. Since Gideon is a gambler and believer in Box's advice, whence Gideon's usefulness is spent, it will simply pass to another in a game of chance. The same way Gideon acquired the Box. The Box exhibits prophetic qualities (e.g. "Do not trust Galen"), with the voice change of the Box, could it mean that Gideon may become the Box. The darkness of the Box, could refer to the change that Gideon might go through (since the reason Gary Cole was hired was his role on "The Brady Bunch Movie" and as Sheriff Lucas Buck in "American Gothic"). His transformation would occur if Gideon were to break the Box, when he would realize it was using him ("I don't like being used" - 'Visitors from Down the Street'), thus whatever may drive the Box, be it a First One, might escape into Gideon. One fact from JMS also remains, whoever has owned an Apocalypse Box, has died under strange and extremely unpleasant circumstances. From the new Psi-Corp. Book from J Gregory Keynes, "Final Reckoning: The Fate of Bester", it is stated that the cure to the Drakh Plague has been found in 2271, and people were free to travel to Earth. This leads to the question what is the Excalibur up to in 2271? One other question remains, who else on the Excalibur knows about the Apocalypse box? |

| This isn't official, but it seems that the most likely candidate for knowing about the box is Lt. Matheson. Galen wouldn't know, because he would, quote, "throw it out the nearest airlock, then run screaming" Max would have exploited/stolen/sold the box already How would Matheson know? In the words of Mr. Bester, "I'm a telepath, figure it out." So, Matheson accidentally finds out about the box, even though he isn't supposed to. (Mr. Jones, New TP rules, etc.) As I said, just speculation, but it makes the most sense to me. |

| There are six more Apocalypse Boxes scattered (hidden) through out the cosmos (source: The Crusade Bible). I believe that Gideon's box is secretly using the Excalibur to locate it's fellow boxes. Pure speculation on my part. I believe the other boxes may contain contain a scattered and evil First One that was split into six boxes and hidden by it's own kind as a form of punishment. This leads to the possible answer of what happens when the cure is found earlier than expected. The Apocalypse Boxes join, become one (JMS has said that there is a "living creature" contained within the box) and feed off Gideon's soul, controling him and his ship. The box now has Gideon's voice, but this could be that Gideon is becoming part of the Box. |
