John and D'Argo's strained friendship hits breaking point...

willowroolz - December 11, 2004 09:44 PM (GMT)
QUOTE
Harvey: "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to pay our final respects and to say farewell to our dear friend, Commander John Crichton, a schmuck. Mule-headed, reckless, and probably brain-dead before I met him. Alas, his death...is mine, also."

Brilliant. This is really the culmination of all the tension that has been building up between John and D'Argo since Aeryn left and beyond. It all comes to a head when the Luxan believes Crichton has tampered with his ship, causing its self-destruct sequence to begin, with no way of understanding how to stop it. The resulting fight leaves John in a coma.

Within his mind he tries to resolve the problems between the two of them, based on the advice of the others, again in his mind. Harvey presses the need for revenge, Pilot tells him to run and stay out of D'Argo's way, Jool stresses the need to communicate, while Chi wants him to be smarter than his opponent. All of these scenarios are played out in spectacular animation.

As a huge fan of Looney Tunes, especially the Roadrunner cartoons, this episode is an absolute dream combination of affection and homage for me. It pushes all the right buttons, from Guy Gross's award-winning score, which perfectly recalls the music from the 50s toons, to D'Argo's hilarious Wile E. Coyote-esque attempts to catch Crichton's Roadrunner.

All of the old standards are here, and not only that but the variations on them as well. For instance, at several points during the episode cartoon-D'Argo paints a wormhole (read: Wile E's tunnel) on a rock face. Toon John promptly rides through the wormhole on the back of the Farscape module (complete with meep-meep horn). D'Argo, naturally, attempts to follow and runs face-first into the cliff.

Later in the episode, using the same set-up, toon D'Argo plunges into the wormhole. In Looney Tunes Wile E would promptly exit the tunnel being chased by a lorry. Here, D'Argo gets flattened by the Starship Enterprise. :lmao:

QUOTE
John: "I don't want to be like other people. I don't want to be like you. I don't want to stoop that low. Kirk wouldn't stoop that low."
Harvey: "That was a television show, John. And he made Priceline commercials. But if you insist, then look to Kirk the way he really was: savage when he had to be."
John: "He's a fiction, Harv. I know the difference. I'm real. I have to live with what I do."

Similar jokes are played with cannons and rockets, all of which invariably backfire (sometimes literally) on toon D'Argo, and are usually invented, in another amusing twist, by Ozme, a tribute to both the Acme inventions of the Looney Tunes and the series being made in Australia.

There are more up to date references too, in the shape of the Mir space station flying past on a couple of occasions, the MacDonalds symbol making an appearance, and Aeryn's amusing rendering as Jessica Rabbit (complete with the "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way" line), Marylin Monroe and Madonna, among others.

One particular reference has been made redundant in this country, but when toon-John rides up and cries out "God, I love Science Fiction!" he is supposed to be looking at the Sci Fi logo in the corner of the screen.

QUOTE
Toon John: "You gotta admit it, my wormhole looks a lot better than yours."
Toon D'Argo: "You...did not...paint...a wormhole!"
Toon John: "You forgot to make yours swirl. Buh-bye! Well, this little spaceman's goin' home. Lock up the women, and hide the fried chicken!"

Of course, it could be classed as being just a rip-off, but it is carried off with such genuine feeling for the originals that it brings a big smile to my face every time. And it also deals with conflicts between the various characters, resolves them at least in some way, and finally gives D'Argo access to the controls of his ship.

And after the high emotion of Talyn John's death in the previous episode, Moya John gets to die here, too, although not permanently.

QUOTE
Harvey: "Even I don't know if it's too late. We could already be gone."
John: "I love Aeryn. That should be enough."

It's an amusing, touching, nicely thought out episode, and totally different to anything else on this or any other series. It kind of reminds me of the way Joss Whedon threw episodes into Buffy that were so out there they just stood out from the crowd, whether it be an episode without dialogue or a musical.

That's all folks!

I love this episode another huge gamble that paid off. The animation is superb in particular the cartoon D'Argo, I've never looked at D'Argo in the same way after this.

The beginning scene with John and D'Argo is quite shocking, we have just seen the other John die and now this one is in peril. The slow motion sequence emphasises the consequences of D'Argo's rash action and it that isn't all his ship is on self destruct behind them.

D'Argo is in a rage with everyone - hyper rage again. Poor Pilot meekly explaining that his ship has crippled all of Moya's operations that were off line at the time.

:(

And then Pilots offer to Jool and the others that Moya would be able to give them a few extra days :(

Love Jool's and Chiana's argument where they just roll the bed with Crichton down the hall whilst they continue to argue leaving him to fall.

It does take Jool a long time to accept responsibility for her actions. When she does I did feel a little sorry for her must admit but she did deserve to wade in the bad dren

Ok the weird and wonderfull roadrunner based animation, so cleverly used with the wormholes used as the painted backdrops. All the usual cartoon devices are used to brilliant effect. Fantastic voice overs too. The animation is so well done, Farscape goes looney tunes.

Love the cartoon Harvey and Aeryn, and the Aeryn/Dorothy clicking her heels "theres no place like home". Again the pop culture references w**k well, love the Kirk ref: Kirk would never stoop that low.

Again we see even more of Moya and the quelter blade tag sequence has to be one of my favourite scenes ever, Chiana and D'Argo throwing the blade back and forth.

Harveys insistence that revenge is the key when clearly not for Johns shows the difference between them. Great lines from Harvey and John's bike story and his old clothes remind us that he is just a human struggling in this freak show his life has become.

The last comedy scene is fantastic with the lumbering D'Argo falling into Johns traps Tom & Jerry style. It is quite scary how frightening John's best friend has become in his psyche.

Great story, great humour and just love the last scene with John in outer space making up with D'argo ending on the Looney Tunes backdrop.

Forgot to mention the girls both after D'Argo's attention in this episode.

Nice to see Chi & D'Argo on better terms, liked the scene where she gets him to I imagine swear in Luxan bringing the ship to life

Jools line at the end, he's taking me on the first flight.

Even more for the girls to fight about

Not much I can add to your review Steve, I'm a big fan of Looney Tunes too so a marriage made in heaven for me

willowroolz - December 11, 2004 10:18 PM (GMT)
I just reviewed the cartoons. You reviewed the important stuff, Alex.

:) Mine was not in great depth though

Can I just say once again how great was the D'Argo/Chi quelter blade sequence and the music

Exactly

Only its I imagine a very heavy sword

And D'Argo's frustration I have the quelter blade, I have the blade - I thought he was going to smash everything

Nice moment as the ship recognises him though :)

willowroolz - December 12, 2004 09:52 AM (GMT)
What would have made it even funnier is if they'd played the Chariots of Fire music in the background. :lmao:

Didn't love it.

I'm not particularly a fan of cartoons, but I felt the cartoonish aspect masked a rather piss poor story. Sorry guys.

Liked the animation sequence for Aeryn, Aeryn Sun as Jessica Rabbit, and Scorpy well, that's going to be funny

I admire what they were trying to do, just didn't much care for the end product.

willowroolz - January 11, 2005 08:54 AM (GMT)
Heathen

Persephone - January 11, 2005 09:18 AM (GMT)
Charming, so this is what happens when you don't agree, it resorts in name calling :p

Not my cup of tea at all, sorry

They took a gamble with Scratch n' sniff, that worked. This didn't for me :p

willowroolz - January 11, 2005 09:25 AM (GMT)
I'm going to send you my Looney Tunes dvd as punishment :p

What about Jool wading through the dren and falling over

That was funny

melian - January 14, 2005 11:16 AM (GMT)
I'm glad they didn't start out this episode with a 'Previously, on Farscape...' bit. Who needs reminding about the last episode :tear:

As Alex said earlier, this episode starts out with even more john related trauma. This time due to his best buddy, Big D. Poor Crichton. He just can't catch a break

Chi to D'Argo: That was mature.

You tell him girl!!

I love this episode, perhaps even more than Scratch n' Sniff :ph43r: Let me count the ways.....

John: Go away and let me do what I gotta do.
Harvey: Oh, what-- find a reason to live?
John: I got plenty of reasons.
Harvey: Then, give me...... the Letterman List.
John: Earth, Dad, pizza, sex... cold beer, fast cars, sex, Aeryn... love.

I love the way that John gives cartoon Harvey corks in his ears. The way we get to see D'Argo sneaking up on John as he speaks to pilot, and his sheepish look as he gets caught

Pilot: I don't get out much... so, I read.
Shades of John's comment to Pilot back in Scratch n' Sniff.

I love.......D'Argo's Ozme backpack rocket........him getting sideswiped by Mir....the glimpse we get of his boxers (Red with yellow polka dots. Classy D'Argo  ).

I love......the big green pencil, infact that entire John and cartoon Aeryn scene :lmao:

Lets face it, I've practically described the whole episode so far

Harvey: Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to pay our final respects and to say farewell... to our dear friend, Commander John Crichton. A schmuck. Muleheaded, reckless, and... probably braindead before I met him.

Oh, and the slow motion passing of the Qualta blade between D'Argo and Chi? Outstanding

Finally. I love the way John's face just about glows as he tells Harvey that he loves Aeryn. That's why he will live

I'll just stop here

willowroolz - January 14, 2005 11:31 AM (GMT)
It's a corker

melian - January 14, 2005 12:33 PM (GMT)

Love this scene, Harvey already looks like a harbinger of death, the OTT victorian funeral suit looks fabulous.

Yes I like the look on John's face when he survives because of his love rather than revenge too :)

As others have said, another huge gamble, and another gamble that pays dividend.

I must admit to an element of WTF to begin with, but the humour and the animation are spot on once again. Cartoon D'Argo is fantastic  As is cartoon Scorpy

After the last couple of episodes, again, this was exaactly what's needed. Infinite Possibilities is an emotional rollercoaster, literally at times  this one changes the tone and pace perfectly.

Loved the Harvey eulogy
