Description: It'll be book buying time soon

Does exactly that it says on the tin
Mine would be The Moon Palace by Paul Auster, read it at university on a whim - completely blown away

Haven't really got a favourite book, I read so much it would be impossible to choose.

Same here, that requires much thought. I have to pay my respect to LOTR but I wouldn't say its my favourite. I have a soft spot for Sound & the Fury - William Faulkner. :)
Crichton Kicks - November 30, 2004 05:30 PM (GMT)
Greg Bear's Anvil of Stars.

I usually answer these things instinctively to get round the too many to choose from problem.
Watchers by Dean Koontz.
Margot C - November 30, 2004 09:48 PM (GMT)
I could never choose a favourite book. I love To Kill A Mockingbird, but if I say that it looks like I never read anything that I don't have to for school, so that's out. ;)
I went through a Jostein Gaarder (author of Sophie's World) phase when I was younger, and I still really love The Christmas Mystery even though it's totally childish, so I guess that's probably one of my favourite books.

Easy question - Dragonlance Chronicles by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman. :)

Must say I'm really enjoying those - nearing the end of book 2 now

Actually just thought of a favourite book.
Legend by David Gemmell - The best book about a siege situation ever!

Another person with good taste ;)
There's probably at least 6 Gemmell books that would be close to being my favourite book.
Still, far too many books I really enjoy to pick just one, perhaps we could do a top 10 (or possibly 20  ).
Nick - December 1, 2004 04:52 PM (GMT)
I'm unlikely to buy someone's top ten (or 20); favourite yes, top 10 no :D
Hovis - December 2, 2004 02:14 PM (GMT)
Blimy Nick,
A difficult question.... too many to mention!
But I guess two of my faves are 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Wuthering Heights.' My most read book is 'Earth Abides' by George R Stewart, a post apocalyptic novel set after an epidemic wipes out most of the worlds population. Great stuff.
The best book I've read this year is 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time' by Mark Haddon.
Take care,
Andrew (HM) :upside:

Technically isn't that a series and not an individual book? ;)
As is Lord of the Rings. ;)
goth willow fan - December 3, 2004 03:31 PM (GMT)
Actually Bill, technically The Lord of the Rings is one book that was published in 3 parts :p

Well, I've got it in one volume, so I don't care, I'm counting it as one book. :p ;)

I thought it was great, and I also would class it as one of the best books of the year. :D

I dont really have a favourite book but my all time favourite story is A CHRISTMAS CAROL. I have 6 different versions of it filmed and the book as well.
Once wrote an alternative ending where Scrooge reforms then fixes Tiny Tim and then dies the following christmas and you saw him welcomed through the gates of heavan.

Bah Humbug  Ken
My favourite book would have to be Reaper Man, by Terry Pratchett. Death gets the sack and starts w**k as a farm hand. Absolutely hilarious.
But then again, since it is the season, I have to give an honourable mention to "The Hogfather" another Terry Pratchett book starring Death.
Hmmm, I seem to be developing a death fixation. I've always thought I needed therapy, now I know for sure :lmao: :lmao:

I have got a few of Pratchett books, my favourite of which is MOVING PICTURES.
Very very funny!!!
jamiearmour - December 11, 2004 09:01 PM (GMT)
Try "Soul Music" It's the story of music with rocks in, that makes you roll. Another hilarious take on the world by Mr Pratchett.

Think I am getting THE DEATH TRILOGY at christmas so hopefully sometime in the new year I will get to read them. I know REAPER MAN and MORT is in there but what is the third one?
jamiearmour - December 12, 2004 01:57 AM (GMT)
The third book in there is "Soul Music" You are a lucky man indeed. All 3 books will have you in hysterics
ken1701e - December 12, 2004 11:20 AM (GMT)
Looking forward to them already
2 weeks to go...

Isn't Terry Pratchett an author of Sci-Fi novels, the books you've described Jamie seem more contemporary than the Discworld type thing???

A good choice Ken. One of my favourite stories. Sorry if anyone out there is a bit sensitive to these things, but I find it a much better illustration of the best bits about Christmas than the original Christmas story!
My fave version is the one with George C Scott as Scrooge, and sometime Trek guest star David Warner as Bob Cratchit. Big kid that I am, I love the Muppet Christmas Carol too! Great fun!
Did you catch the ITV version on Sunday? A modernised version, with Ross Kemp as 'Eddie' Scrooge? I thought it was surprisingly good, although a few liberties were taken with the story.
Better run,
Take care,
Andrew (HM) :upside:

He has written some scifi novels (for kids) like "Only you can save mankind" a funny take on "The last starfighter" type movie.
He does predominently write discworld novels now though (thats what pays don't you know) The death trilogy that Ken and I were discussing is set on the disc. His writing is insightful, intelligent and above all, hilarious.

I love the Discworld novels (the few that I've read anyway). DEATH is funny, I really enjoyed Mort and Reaper Man.

At this time of year, I would reccomend reading "Hogfather." With death pretending to be the discs version of Santa, some of the presents kids get are outstandingly good choices.
Plus the character of Teatime is one of the funniest and scariest fictional characters ever commited to paper.
melian - December 22, 2004 02:11 PM (GMT)
Hmm. Favourite book.
Maybe From the Corner of His Eye by Dean Koontz.
Or any of the Red Dwarf books.
It all depends on what mood I'm in :D
