Title: 3.15 Infinite Possibilities Pt 2
Description: Icarus Abides
willowroolz - November 27, 2004 11:49 AM (GMT)

With Charrids outside and the Scarran dreadnaught on the way time is growing short. And while the planetside half of the crew faces a deadly betrayal, those aboard Talyn have troubles of their own...

Overall a fabulous conclusion to this two parter. Again its full of energy and face paced and full of action.
Great opening as it turns out that Harvey hadn't really taken control of Crichton and it was his last ditch attempt at revenge and how close was Aeryn to killing him! The only thing that doesn't sit with me is that Harvey would be willing to kill John rather than leaving him alive for Scorpius to recover the knowledge later.
Whilst revenge is the driving force behind Scorpy's personality and the clone reflects that, I can't help but feel that his sole purpose for being is to remove the data and that is too valuable to Scorpy to have revenge take the precedance. Just my opinion and it is a great dramatic scene nonetheless.
So John has everything freedom from Harvey, wormhole knowledge unlocked and Aeryn's love, things can only go bad from here.
Great to see Rygel is alive and love him asking for more food to carry on despite his wound.
So Furlow betrays them all kills Jack and gets away with it. Poor Jack being shot in the back although I'm not sure how much sympathy I should feel for the ancients after the burden they placed on John.
Its hard to predict what Furlow will do next in this episode and I was taken by surprise by her last minute betrayal. Being Miss wormhole not good enough. Everything comes down to her act of betrayal everything would have gone to plan and had a happy ending if it weren't for this.
We do however get a fabulous dune buggy chase. Aeryn typically blames John for their gun not w**king he does seem to be a bad luck magnet.
The sub plot on board Talyn adds to the tension and great comedy from Stark posing as the snivelly Banik slave. The idea of using the transponder to give Talyn the capacity to see and target the Scarran is a great little twist added to this episode.
The best moment for me has to be the face off with the Scarran dreadnaught, Crais's seriously delivered declaration of war followed by Starks
"They must be terrified"
Then we have the crushing blow, John has to expose himself to radiation he has no choice, his clutching of sand in despair tells it all, they were so close and yet he knows his fate instantly. We now see how dangerous the wormhole knowledge can be it could destroy a planet and we see the dreadnaught reduced to nothing.
Claudia's portrayal of Aeryn's pain is wonderful. After John's success at destroying the dreadnaught her anxious wait for his voice to come over the coms is heartbraking.
Then we have the death scene goodbye to John, his peacemaking with Crais, his quip to Rygel that he can't have his things and the tragically touching scenes with Aeryn. We know there is another John out there but it is still so sad and the final scene, Aeryn wrapping herself in the blanket with John getting the last warmth from his body showing her reluctance to let him go reduces me to tears every time.
It is an episode full of action, great dialogue far too much to mention, comedy and pathos.
Again big thumbs up.

Harvey: "Officer Sun...next time...be more decisive. Shoot quicker. A soldier must not be weak. Weakness means defeat."
Okay, I’m going to make no apologies for this: I’m going to gush. Icarus Abides is absolutely, frelling magnificent. It’s one of those episodes that, as soon as it’s finished, I just want to restart it and watch it all again. It’s that good.
I’m not going to waste time (for once) going through the details of the plot. It picks up exactly where Daedalus Demands left off and rattles on from there at an incredible pace, all the more remarkable in that it covers so much ground and yet still leaves time for a full five minutes of the heartbreaking final scene.
John: "I got it. Aeryn, I got it ! It all fits, everything fits! I know how to do this, I can build this thing, I know what it does."
Aeryn: "Can it destroy the dreadnaught?"
John: "...It could destroy a planet."
So we finally get to see what a wormhole can do if it’s used as a weapon. In what is possibly the single most spectacular effect I can remember on a tv show (at least, until The Peacekeeper Wars turned up) Crichton uses Jack’s displacement engine to destroy the Scarran dreadnaught. It is a truly awe-inspiring and terrifying moment, in essence showing us exactly why he is now hunted by both Scorpius and the Scarrans. Imagine this level of power in the wrong hands. Without hitting us over the head with the obvious, Farscape makes a statement about the world we live in today.
In the meantime Furlow proves herself to be completely duplicitous, first killing Jack and then double-crossing John. Not quite sure what happened to the Charrids she was dealing with – if she killed them, what happened to the bodies?
Crais: "Scarran dreadnaught. This is Captain Bialar Crais, Peacekeeper. Approach any closer, you will be engaged and destroyed."
Stark: "They must be terrified."

Rygel proves himself to be a real fighter, whilst in orbit the Scarrans make a play to take control of Talyn, ably fought off by Crais and Stark.
Aeryn: "You know this new knowledge you've got in your head?"
John: "Yeah?"
Aeryn: "Can you use it to get home?"
John: "Yeah."
Aeryn: "Let's do what we have to do here and then we'll go."
Once Jack unlocks the information stored in John’s mind, Crichton realises that he can go home, that he can create a wormhole to do this. But he doesn’t want to go alone and, finally, Aeryn fully commits herself to him, prepared to leave behind everything she knows in order to be with him.
How heartrending is it, then, to have all their wishes fulfilled only to have them cruelly ripped away? Having chased Furlow and the displacement engine across the planet surface in a thrilling dune-buggy sequence (brilliantly shot, and how cool was Aeryn when she stood in front of the Charrid pursuer?) John effectively sacrifices himself to save the others, closing the open casing on the device’s nuclear fuel compartment.
The sense of doom that takes over the episode from that point is unbearable, knowing that, even if he survives the destruction of the Scarran vessel, Crichton will die. Even if it is manipulative in the extreme (knowing that the other John still exists) the death of this John is one of the most emotional sequences I have ever seen. All of the actors are amazing. Lani Tupu portrays Crais’s newly found respect for his adversary so well, but it is – once again – Ben Browder and Claudia Black who are quite stunning. I had thought that Claudia had given her all back in The Way We Weren’t, but her performance in the final scene here is just breathtaking.
And Ben Browder? Well, death scenes are so rarely completely convincing, often laced with melodrama and overacting. But he is totally convincing here, and deserves all the accolades he gets. And what a dream it must be for an actor to be able to play the death of his or her character, and the leading character at that, with the assurance that they’ll be back the following week.
It’s a fitting end to a quite superb two-parter. As Alex has already observed, it’s hard not to double-check that this isn’t the season finale.
And go on, admit it: you cried, didn’t you?
I do, every time.
Aeryn: "I'm very angry."
John: "Me too."
Aeryn: "We had good times."
John: "I wouldn't change it for the world. You made me...a better person."
Aeryn: "That wasn't hard... I love you, so much."
John: "I love you."
Aeryn: "I would have gone to Earth."
John: "I'm sorry you never got to meet my dad -- my real dad, I mean. Sorry I never met your dad. I'm sorry about a lot of things."
Aeryn: "No. Don't be, I don't want you to go like that."
John: "I won't. ...Huh."
Aeryn: "What?"
John: "They say it's a lucky or an unambitious man who goes when he's ready. That said... Scorpius is gone. I'm at peace. I don't...hurt. I...I did some good things. I'm proud of my life. And I'm with you. ... Don't worry about me. I've never felt better."

Very Mad Max 2 ish. One of the hi-lights of the season!

Definitely. Very exciting.

I must say when I first saw these eps I was so exited. It is a real change of pace and really is Farscape at its best. There is so much to take in and they maintain the tension brilliantly.
Good point about the Charrids, however Furlow did know the lab inside out so probably had some hidey holes.
willowroolz - December 6, 2004 11:09 AM (GMT)
I think it's testament to the quality of these two episodes that, even though we haven't seen them since Scratch 'n' Sniff, the absence of D'Argo, Chi etc isn't that noticeable. :)
laughitupfuzzball - December 6, 2004 12:38 PM (GMT)
I think the inclusion of Jack and Furlow gives it a season 1 feel. It is totally different to Scratch n sniff and no we don't miss them there wouldn't be enough room for them in the episodes anyway.
I know one of the reasons that they used the cast split was to be able to concentrate on the individual characters more and it really pays off. Hats off to the writers
:)

What did you think of Harvey trying to kill John with him?
willowroolz - December 6, 2004 02:55 PM (GMT)
I think that Harvey really didn't believe that Aeryn would pull the trigger. I understand your comments in your review, but I think he was so sure of himself that he felt he could walk up to her and disarm her. Of course, she did pull the trigger. He underestimated her. :)
laughitupfuzzball - December 6, 2004 04:07 PM (GMT)
Ah, very possibly I hadn't thought of it that way.

I already saw the rolled eyes mister :whip:
This will be brief since
You've already covered everything, and I'm anxious to watch some more
Wow, it's like a testdrive. The writers find a way in which to deal with the wormhole knowledge, give Crichton a way home, kill off one of the Crichton's, solve the Scorpy chip, and reinstate the threat the Scarrans possess. Hats off to the writers. Off course there's always the other Crichton on Moya, alive, still with chip, lack of knowledge, no hope of getting home, and again, alive  Suberb
What can you possibly say about Claudia, she made me cry.........................again :tear: :tear:
I did say it would be brief
(up there with my other fav eps)

:) It made me cry too. Very well written as you say Lisa.
Its a totally different show to that of Meltdown just a few eps before, this is Farscape at its best
melian - January 14, 2005 10:54 AM (GMT)
As Lisa says, there isn't much more to say that hasn't already been covered :D
And yes. I did cry. For about 20 minutes. I think I started when John was exposed to the radiation and didn't stop till the end of the credits
It must have been hard for Crichton to see 'Jack' die. I mean he knew it wasn't his real dad, but still......
And I fervently wished that Jack had been able to tell them about Furlows betrayal before he died. Then none of the rest would have happened. John and Aeryn would have been happy...... Oh well, as they say, if wishes were horses and all that :(
Shellshocked. Thats how I felt when I first watched this. It's still how I feel after the 4th or 5th viewing. The last 10-15 minutes are just brutal. CB and BB are just fantastic in the death scene. His speech. Her stoicism as she watches him die. The way that she can barely bring herself to touch his face to close his eyes. As she climbs under the blanket with him. It is all too easy to forget that there is another John out there.

That's the beauty of it. It's incredibly harrowing and emotional despite the fact that we know Crichton will be back the following week. :)
Crichton Kicks - February 16, 2005 11:06 PM (GMT)
A fantastic conclusion to the 2-parter.
This episode pretty much has everything, with Crichton freeing himself of Harvey, and unleashing the knowledge of the Ancients, only to have it all snatched away at the last.
The episode works on a number of different levels. It's a satisfying conclusion to the actual plot, it takes the 'wormhole' arc that bit further, it advances certain characters, as well as setting up events both on a plot and character level further down the line.
You wondered how long the 2 Crichtons storyline would play out for, and fair play to them for stretching it out as long as they did, but what a way to bring it to a conclusion.
The final scenes are moving, even though you know he'll be back next week, they kind of got to have the best of both worlds. A great death scene, ramifications of the death, but at the same time, said character will be back.
Shame about Jack, and If I'd have been Crichton I'd have popped a cap in Furlow's fat ass.
A fantastic episode.
