Chiana and Jool need shore leave, and Pilot needs a break from John and D'Argo's bickering. A stopover on the local pleasure planet seems like just the ticket...if only the crew can stay out of trouble long enough to enjoy it.

 Where to start...

OK, how cool is this episode. Farscape on acid. Obviously done in the style of Lock Stock it was a big risk that paid off. We like risks.

Flashes of the bar. Crichton & co on the pleasure planet.

We have the somewhat strung out Crichton trying to explain his and D'Argo's early return to Moya to the very puzzled Pilot, which is really funny, Pilot is the perfect straight guy.

More flashes of the bar, the girls getting drunk and the boys trying to settle their differences. D'Argo has a lot of issues with John at this point, John is acting to sebacean like according to him and discounting him in decision making. I think the truth is that John is desparate to crack wormholes and is also trying to take his mind off Aeryn and the other John.

John and D'Argo's dancing is so lame but funny particularly D'Argo. They are certainly happy to pull blue and green girls. 'Blue breasts green breasts' Crichton with blue feather in mouth, puts on top, stands in window realises he is wearing stockings cue big girly scream fantastic.

Not to sure that the beach set with the tents is so good as a back drop but the cast were happy to do some outdoor shoots. I do like the 60's feel though with the shapes and colours.

Kinky S & M clothing is a must on this planet which looks quite funny on some of the extras.

Next we come to the show. The Haagi idea is great, stick his tentacles in your eyes eww. Nice creature  raxil gets on my nerves but she is supposed to be annoying so its ok.

Chiana is fabulous as ever, loving her flame twirling. Fetor is suitably creepy, nice snake eyed looking contacts.

So the girls are in trouble, cue D'Argo resorts to caveman behavior. Back door for deliveries, smack. Great revelation that Jool is screaming with pleasure in the bath. Nice acting by the way from both the girls being under the influence of Freslin.
When Chiana has her first sniff at the bar you know they are in big trouble and the shock of seeing the kinky looking red chair and how freslin is made is quite disturbing.

So D'Argo is out gunned and goes back to beat the truth out of Raxil. Lovely inclusion of Scopius on the second Haagi visit. Oh thats just Harvey quite normal
How does scorpy know where the milking room is however?

Love Dandy D'Argo, it looks more like Anthony Simcoe oddly enough. I remember on the first watch being quite freaked out by him but I'm used to him now. Crichton manages to hold it together and not slug Fetor but the reaction of D'Argo to Crichtons handling of Chiana is suprising. He is certainly not over her.

Great night vision shoot out. Small human steps joke quite funny but wears thin after a few watches, its important though as it gives away his presence. Nice tongue lash we don't get enough of those.

Chiana's prophetic powers are seen again, your neck hurt, take those of you don't want to break them, punch. Chiana relishes offing Fetor in the way he deserves however he does sadly die with a smile on his face. Then we see what Raxil wanted all along, her designs for the chair. Perhaps they should have included the deleted scene where this gets smashed.

Lastly great ending, you open the door - no you open the door.
So overall very funny, sexy and slick. I really enjoyed the way the story was told out of sequence and it is edited very cleverly.

Fantastic and great episode for Chi. Big big

John to Pilot: "Hey, you know what? It's a weird universe out there, man. You don't know that, because you're spending all your time indoors."

Oh, where to start? I love this episode. It's my favourite episode of the entire series. Sure there are episodes that are more dramatic, more exciting, more emotional, maybe even funnier, but in terms of flair, direction, sound, editing and sheer style Scratch 'n' Sniff is second to none. It's as though Quentin Tarantino suddenly walked on set and took over. It's all there, from Ben Browder's laconic voiceover, to the jump-cutting, to the music, to the violence, to the drugs, to the swearing (albeit Farscape's own unique take on that particular element). In short, it's a riot.

The central premise, the idea that drives the story, that of freslin and its extraction from the body, doesn't make a whole heap of sense (as Pilot observes, if they'd drained that much fluid from Jool's body she'd be dead  ), and I hate to say that it doesn't matter. But in this case it really doesn't.

Much as Incubator was Scorpy telling his version of events, this is John telling his own story to Pilot in an attempt to bargain his and D'Argo's way back onto Moya, seeing as Pilot has ordered them off the Leviathan for ten days due to their constant bickering (an ongoing theme at the moment). It's a stroke of genius, because it allows them to tell the story in the most outrageous ways they want and we're not to know how much John is embellishing the tale. With that one, simple central conceit they wipe away any plot holes and/or inconsistencies, because all we're relying on here is Crichton's memory. Brilliant.

Raxil to John: "You're not very smart, are you? Now he - (D'Argo) - he's got a brain. But you, you're a bit of an idiot."

Welcome Raxil, aka Francesca Buller, aka Mrs Ben Browder, and right up there with Grunchlk as one of the very best guest characters on the series. And she's funny and creepy and weird, and she uses John and D'Argo for her own ends from the moment they set foot on LoMo. It's hilarious turn by Buller (the accent's brilliant) and I really didn't want to see her go.

Raxil: "Please don't hit me, please don't--" (D'Argo hits her) "Aaagh! ...All right, you can hit me just once. Just once!"

This episode is full of so many great touches that it's hard to remember them all. I love the way they almost off-handedly throw in Chi's second sight, just making it seem so natural and almost inconsequential. The freslin that changes D'Argo's appearance doesn't make any sense at all, but it's very funny. I love Chi's little bop around the table at the start, and the dance D'Argo does when Raxil first sprays him.

John: "What, what doesn't make sense? She nailed him with Love Potion Number Nine!"
Pilot: "It made him dance?"
John: "Well, it's a way to meet girls."

I love Harvey's brief visit, the little drumroll he does on his chest and the way D'Argo starts chatting up the two women in the bar, leaving John out of the bargain entirely. And what about the Hangi, Kabaah? Looks like a hammerhead shark with tentacles. But he's so posh.

Oh, and the varying looks of exasperation, disbelief, annoyance and disgust that play across Pilot's face during the course of the episode are a joy. And what about the music, that sets the tempo right from the off and even replaces the closing theme. And, oh, the end of the teaser, when John and D'Argo wake up in the window: John's reaction to their predicament is hilarious. And the way his Southern drawl comes out when he enters the auction, too.

John (voiceover about Fe'Tor): "Does this guy just scream Vegas or what?"

If I had to pick one episode to show to someone to get them into Farscape then this wouldn't be it: it's too weird and too outrageous and it'd probably go straight over their heads. But that's wrong. In a way, with the notable exception of those aboard Talyn, Scratch 'n' Sniff sums up everything that drew me into the show and made me a fan. It's got the acting, the dialogue, the humour, the quirkiness and - above all else - the balls to attempt something different.

D'Argo: "What, he didn't believe you?"
John: "No."
D'Argo: "Well, what was that thing about a slim duck?"
John: "Slam dunk!"

Genius.

John: "You would argue with a lamppost."
D'Argo: "I would not. Open the door."
John: "You open it."
D'Argo: "You open the door."
John: "What, you're a girl? I'm not going to open the door for you. Open the door."
D'Argo: "I'm older than you, show some respect. Open it."
John: "You can't open it? I'm not opening the door."
D'Argo: "I'm not opening the door. You open it."

I love it when they mess with narrative structure. Not enough tv shows do this, which is one of the reasons I liked Boomtown so much.

laughitupfuzzball - November 27, 2004 10:17 PM (GMT)
Agree with loads of what you have said. I like that its Crichton's memory too and that we are reliant on his version, I'm sure D'Argo's would be very different.

Sorry I seem to have spelt some of the characters names wrong  I was too eager to post.

I have to disagree on Raxil though, I wanted to punch her myself. She did play the character very well, she was supposed to be a nasty little dealer type but I really did enjoy those punches.

The style of the episode suits the content perfectly and the music totally contrasts with the seriousness of the issues.

You didn't mention the chair. I love it when Fe'Tor is guiding Jool to the milking room and she is excited and then sees it. Oh the horror :fear:

I found her really funny. Not sure she was supposed to be nasty, just devious. She has some great lines, too. I did like the way they slowly unravelled her motives.

Maybe I've spelt them wrong.

laughitupfuzzball - November 27, 2004 10:26 PM (GMT)
Yeah but at the end its revealed that she is nasty, she doesn't come over as being nasty until the end true. Maybe its just jealousy I generally don't like her and enjoy it when she is slapped about  She does have some great lines though.

I did like her as one character but thats in S4.

Do you ever look at her characters alongside him and think "Nah, that looks so wrong!"

Anyway, I'm glad we've disagreed on something at last. I was beginning to think you were me.

laughitupfuzzball - November 27, 2004 10:35 PM (GMT)
I can't think of any other shows that could actually pull something like this off. Especially in 45 minutes. How did they manage to fit so much in in such a short space of time.

Its so quick paced and packed with so much. I can declare by the way that I liked Jool in this episode and start to like her from here on. Chiana wins the show however. :P

LMAO love this ep

I can't believe I enjoyed an ep so much that had slutty Chianna doing that Monroe voice, which I hate, and Jools screaming a lot, but omigod comedy genius.

Farscape goes to the Beach

Stand out scenes

Crichton's scream as he realises he's wearing stockings in public

D'Argos' other alterego

D'argo dancing

Crichton/D'Argo on the pull

John trying to explain what happened to Pilot

Fantastic. Fabulous. Stupendous. Need I say more?

I remember the first time I saw this episode. It was a good job I was watching and taping at the same time as I missed most of the episode through laughing! As soon as the last note of the truely hilarious lounge music from the end credits finished I ran the tape back and watched it all over again :D

I think this has to be one of my most watched Farscape episodes ;)
Some of the images in it are forever engrained in my mind, especially the fishnet stocking incident!!

I wasn't sure what to make of this one to begin with. Luckily, it turned out a hell of a lot better than the previous episode.

The aftermath scenes of Crichton/D'Argo being turned over were hilarious  and D'Argo's dancing

As far as the humour goes, this one is pretty much a showcase for everything about Farscape that works, to that regard. Hilarious, whilst at the same time able to conduct a competant plot.

After the last few episodes, and considering where the show's about to go, this one was pretty necessary. A bit of levity

This is the episode I've watched more than any other. The John and D'Argo interplay is just brilliant, setting up Revenging Angel. Stylistically it's one of the show's triumphs. And it's just so damn funny

:) I think its something Farscape manages to do really well, breaking up the tension with cracking comedy episodes, no matter how serious it gets for them there is always room for laughter :)

Im_Here - June 23, 2005 07:52 PM (GMT)
this is probably the best funny/wierd episode of farscape ive seen, the way chricton and D'argo bickering is hilarious but when they've been drugged and in the shop window where is wearing stockings made me howl with laughter, i also like the lock, stock type narrative in the episode!

whats everyone elses thoughts on this episode!

willowroolz - June 23, 2005 08:42 PM (GMT)
There are threads for every Farscape episode, all you need to do is change the search options at the bottom of each of the season forums from "Last 30 days" to "From the beginning" and they should all show up ;)

Any problems, let me know :)
