SPOILER FREE
I'm a big film music fan so it was a given that I ordered this before even seeing the mini-series. I've always been a fan of Guy Gross's music for the series too, especially when I thought Subvision's incidental music was so woeful (notice I'm not including the original theme in that statement ;) ).
After seeing the mini (and being reduced to an emotional wreck by the final few minutes which - thankfully - are all present and correct here) I couldn't wait to hear the full soundtrack without the "interference" of dialogue and sound effects. Also, as I have only watched the mini once from start to finish (although I've watched the end several times   ) I am judging this purely on the strength of the music as, apart from the final track, I can't remember exactly what was happening on screen while this was all going on.
I can't go into a lot of detail seeing as a lot of the cues have titles that are inevitably spoilery but, suffice to say, this is top notch material. It maintains the standards of the mini by having big screen attitude, an approach that was taken across the board for The Peacekeeper Wars. For the first time, Farscape has a full orchestral score, as provided by the Sydney Symphony and Cantillation. What this means is that you have a lot of bombast (Peacekeeper Ambush), a lot of louder action-oriented passages (Moya Attacked), and plenty of quieter, more introspective character-driven moments (Chiana & D'Argo), with plenty of drama and emotion provided by the swelling choral accompaniment.
It's first class, clocking in at just under seventy minutes and rivalling even a lot of blockbuster movie scores that I like, and - if there were any justice in the world - should win awards. But then we all know there is no justice, otherwise we'd have been watching season five instead of this magnificent enterprise. See, always a silver lining.
The only thing that strikes me as slightly strange is that there is no closing title music. As the copy I saw cut off before the end titles I was curious to hear the music that was used, but I'll have to wait for the offical dvd release. In any case, the final cue here, which shall remain nameless for obvious reasons, is quite wonderful and brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
Highly recommended.
