Title: 1x16 Eyes

Sinclair's decisions the last year catch up with him, when an internal affairs investigator arrives to test the crew's loyalty to Earth Force with the help of a telepath. And Lennier shows great interest in Garibaldi's attempt at assembling a 1990's motorcycle.

After the poor <very> two episodes that went before this one I wasnt holding out a lot of hope but it was a pleasant suprise that this was actually very good.
Sinclair, Ivanova and Garibaldi were all excellent although once again I thought Garibaldi had the best line.

Obviously Sinclair has made a bitter enemy in Bester for him to set this up but with only 6 episodes left until the end of the season and I know Sinclair is not the commander in the next one I can only assume something very major is about to happen.
After last week I was having doubts about this series, now I cannot wait for it to continue.

And I hope you recognised the certain telepath who was guest starring? :)

Yep, thankfully back to normal after last week's poor showing. I liked this rather a lot. Good to see that those consequences that were referred to several episodes ago are coming to the foreground. Not that I expect that to be the last of it by any means. I suppose I'm kinda disappointed that it's already been mentioned a couple of times that Sinclair is not in the next series. I can only assume if would have been a greater shock had I not known. Seeing as I don't have the dvds and couldn't therefore check the covers, it would have been fairly easy for me to stay unspoiled. Oh well. :rolleyes:
Onto the next... :)

A very good episode, made all the better by the presence of the always excellent Jeffrey Coombs.
Sinclair once again shows himself adept at twisting the rules to suit himself, as he did with the striking miners. Ivanova seems terrified of the Psi Corps, wonder why.
Particularly liked the idea of Lennier building the motor bike.

Don't worry, you weren't the only person guilty of discussing this particular spoiler. ;) :lol:

This was okay but some of the acting was a little OTT I thought. I didn't think it was that much better than the previous 2 but then I didn't think they were that bad anyway.

Interesting episode this one. Possibly my favourite none-'essential' episode.
The consequences of Sinclair's recent actions over the past year finally come home to roost. There's a lot of important information here as well. One line actually encapsulates the current state of affairs in the B5-verse pretty well;
QUOTE
You've made enemies Jeff. You know what's going on back on Earth, Mars, all over the Alliance. The President's being attacked on all sides. Off world groups are screaming for independence. Earth Force is falling apart. Anti-Alien groups spreading their poison everywhere. Psi Corps pulling strings.....
Garibaldi's assessment is apt. The whole political situation is like a cauldron at the moment.How long before things come to a head ??
There are also a couple of interesting questions that come to mind. Telepaths aren't allowed in military service. Why ?? Ben Zane and Bester are friends ?? The whole investigation has powerful backers ?? Earth Force and Psi Corps in league ?? Just does to what extent Ben Zane represent Earth Force though ?? There's also the little nugget towards the beginning of the proceedings, that certain regulations are being rewritten to suit Psi Corps. Garibaldi again asks the right question;
QUOTE
Who's running Earth Force....??
It was interesting that Ben Zane enlisted Garibaldi to work on his behalf gathering the information required. The only disappointing thing about the A-story for me was the abrupt manner of it's resolution. Although I loved Sinclair's put down of Ben Zane;
QUOTE
I've faced death, on the line....where were you ??
There was also the story with Ivanova. We've known of her dislike for the Psi Corps for some time. She's also idealistic, choosing to resign her position on principle rather than submitting to an involuntary scan. And what was the significance of that surreal dream ?? Dreams have an important role to play with certain characters, is Ivanova one of them ?? Is there somekind of hidden meaning there ?? Or is it another red herring, something else that Joe's famous for scattering here and there to throw us off the scent ?? :blink:
There were a couple of other things worthy of note;
Firstly the Garibaldi/Lennier B-story. An interesting dynamic. Not two characters that you'd think spend any amount of time together, but for me it worked well. But then, both Garibaldi and Lennier tend to bounce of anyone pretty well. Loved the little one-liners;
QUOTE
But if I kill him, I'll start a war....
QUOTE
A sign...of sexual prowess...and rebellion
Or Garibaldi's eventual joy at discovering the bike actually works;
QUOTE
It works ?? Get outta here !!
QUOTE
Yes...of course....
:lol: :lol: :lol:
And the final scene of Garibaldi and Lennier tearing along the station is a picture in itself. All in all, a lovely bit of product placement :lol:
The other thing of merit was the character of Harriman Grey. Jeff Combs needs no introduction here I'm sure, and here, again, he brings a quality that any show would be lucky to have on a permanent basis. The character himself I seem to recall later turned up in one of the earlier B5 novels.
Decent episode. The best for a while, and gets the momentum going again towards the end of the season.

Yeesh, I've gotten a long way behind here....
But no matter.
One of the things I really like about "Eyes" - and, indeed, B5 as a whole - is all those references to past events. Unlike, say, Trek, B5's creator/producers assume the viewer has an attention span of more than five minutes. It's assumed the viewer can remember events that took place several episodes ago. It's a simple enough thing, but too often it's assumed viewers simply want instant gratification and don't care about building a mood or a theme over several episodes. It's one area (one of many IMO) where B5 has it all over Trek.
That said...there's a sense of something building through the episode. What is ben Zane's problem with Sinclair? Is it just that he was passed over for command, or something more? Why does he second Garibaldi?
What's with Ivanova's loathing of Psi Corps?
How cool was it that Lennier built the bike in five minutes? :lol:
There's a lot to like about "Eyes". Not one of my absolute favourites, but definitely one of the better stand-alones.

Another good episode after the so-so last couple.
I always thought this was a little too similar both dramatically and thematically to "And the Sky Full of Stars" You could swap Ben Zayn for Knight One and not notice.
Having said that there is alot of good stuff here - Psi Corp medling etc

I'm guessing B5 doesn't have any laws about the use of vehicles in pedestrian areas, then. :p
A very good episode - was good to see all the pointers to various events throughout the series of where Sinclair had "danced along the line to make things w**k", as it were. :) I also enjoyed the way each party was using Earthforce beauracracy to backfire eachother.
Ivanova's dream sequence had that "slightly cheesy yet very creepy" feel to it, especially with Psi-Corps in masks. Props to the make-up team for the cold sweat too!
As well as Ivanova's numerous always-great quotes, Garibaldi also gets points in this episode for his mutterings on Lennier: "How can I kill him without starting a war..." (or something like that) :lol: Also, on that thought, it was amusing to see Lennier's eyes seem to light up on the concept of "sexual prowess and rebellion"... :D

Yes, I did. "What a surprise..." :p

Same here, the problem with this one being that Gregory Martin isn't that convincing as Ben Zayn, he overdoes the bulging eyes a bit too much. Jeffrey Combs is always good value, he manages the right level of slimey and creepy.
Still a good episode, though, and interesting for the backstory of what's happening on Mars, not to mention the subtle (and not so subtle) hints in the direction of Ivanova and Talia. Ivanova's nightmare is quite disturbing, too.
I'm sure Garibaldi got the specs of the bike wrong, though :lol: ;)
Love the final shot :thumbsup:
