Title: Astonishing X Men - Joss Whedon
Hovis - November 11, 2004 05:06 PM (GMT)
Hiya,
Has anyone been reading the above? I was a big X-Men fan as a kid, and loved the movies. I'm a big Joss Whedon fan too, and to me, Joss and the X-Men seems a match made in heaven. I haven't been able to track these comics down, although I understand a graphic novel will be available in the New Year. Just wondered what the general opinion was on these books? Are they as good as they ought to be?
I read Joss's 'Fray' graphic novel months back, and loved it. JW seems to know his way around writing comics, so I'm hoping for big things with this.
Take care,
Andrew (HM) :upside:
Mmmm, maybe I should get my old 1970's marvels out of the loft and have a good old read up!

Yep, I'm reading it - just bought issue 6 today in fact.
And it's very good indeed!
jamiearmour - November 11, 2004 06:23 PM (GMT)
Hovis, I would heartily reccomend this book to anyone willing to listen to me rant about how good it is, (and even to some who aren't). Joss Whedon is an amazing writer (well duh) and he has made me like Kitty Pryde (a feat hitherto known as mission impossible). He even brought back Lockheed the dragon YAY.
Read it!!!!
It is perhaps The greatest title out there right now. (Yes, that includes spiderman and Strange, and Identity Crisis).
Buy the comics now while they are still relatively cheap. You could see them as investments if you need further justification. ;)

Thanks!
I think I'll take your advice and search out the comics as well as awaiting the graphic novel release!
Take care,

But can I find them all online, or in the shops? Nope, of course I can't! Grrrr.... looks like a trip to London at the weekend!

Hey Hovis, I've noticed my local FP is selling a collected edition of the first 3 issues for about £3. If you can't get the originals then that could be a back up plan?
The first story arc just came to an end. Very cool final page. :D

Yeah that's how I got the first 3 parts - you'll be very lucky indeed (and need a big wallet) to find the original issues.
Wasn't that last page great :o
btw I've just started getting Uncanny as well (bought the last 6 months worth) - that's also pretty good - and may put that final page in context ;)

I haven't picked up any of the other X-books (with the exception of X-Calibur) since Grant Morrison left. Xcalibur is highly underrated IMO.
On your reccomendation though, I might try and pick up Uncanny. Who's writing these days?
I am looking forward to the new XMen/FF crossover. I've seen some of the art by Pat Lee, looks cool. Am I the only on to think that he should be hired to redesign the sentinels???

Hiya, Jamie
I've ordered one to five online, still waiting for a delivery. The only comic shop for miles around laughed at me when I asked, and said they'd been selling like hotcakes!
I've also ordered the Graphic Novel version from Amazon which I will get on release, which they say will be in Feb.
Looking forward to a good read-up now!
I also have 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' to read. Been a big fan of Alan Moore since I fell madly in love with Halo Jones from 2000AD back in the 80's!

It's Chris Claremont again.

Halo Jones was a fabulous strip!

Presumably you've read Alan Moore's Watchmen Andrew ??
I was so close to getting that one this morning. Only £12.99.

Yes I know but as long as it doesn't involve time travel/clones/future children from an alternate timeline, I don't think I'll mind

Actually, I haven't read 'Watchmen'. I should have done, as I've thoroughly enjoyed all the Alan Moore stuff I've read. As well as Halo Jones, I enjoyed the 'Future Shocks' and 'Time Twisters' he did for 2000AD as well as other bits and bobs. (Did he do 'Skizz' too, I can't remember now, but we are talking arounf 20 years ago I guess!)
So 'Watchmen' goes on the list too.
I got the 'Astonishing X-Men' back copies yesterday. I read number one last night. (I'm planning to take it slowly and savour them!) And thoroughly enjoyed it. Great stuff. It's good to see The Beast (the other Dr McCoy!)
Oh, and the latest SFX has screen shots of the Fantastic Four movie. From the look of them, The Thing looks amazing. (Feeling like a 10 yr old here now!)
Take care,
Andrew (HM) :upside:

Widely regarded as one of the best graphic novels ever written Andrew ;)
I'm not sure I'd quite go that far, but it's damned good

I tempted with the TPB myself now after all this talk Andrew ;)
Crichton Kicks - November 26, 2004 04:30 PM (GMT)
Seeing as I was in town today I thought I'd check out FB and see if they had any back issues of AXM in stock. They're usually pretty good and have the last 3 or 4 in. No joy whatsoever, not only no backissues but no copies of the latest issue left either
Guess it's going to have to be the TPB then

Finished reading the 5 issues I have last night, and was blown away. I guess I'm going to have a struggle to find number 6, but I'll have a good look.
Terrific stuff. I admit I'm way out of date with some of the characters back stories, but such is the economical nature of Joss's writing, I learnt a lot as I was going.

It should be easy enough for you to find issue 6. It was only released 2 or 3 weeks ago. If you do have any problems let me know, my local Forbidden Planet seems to have more than it's fair share of them, I could post you a copy.
goth willow fan - November 29, 2004 11:55 AM (GMT)
Yep FP here had loads of issue 6 when I was there on Saturday. I was kind of hoping 7 would be out last week :(
