I thought I'd start a new topic here, as Ken's one hasn't been touched since September.
I've just started subscribing to the Stargate:SG1 partwork that's been knocking around the newsagents. (Yea, yea, I know, an expensive way of buying it! ;) :D ;) ) Due to a mix up with the subscriptions, I've had dvd's 2, 3, 4 and 5 sent to me as back issues, with no. 6 the first subscription issue. This kind of defeats my object of getting the episodes in bite sized chunks. The other problem is that I receive the Pilot episodes as my first free gift with the first subscription issue (any day now, I hope!) so I still haven't seen it! Grrr!
Anyway, just a few comments on each episode as I go, a la my Trek ones on the Beeb board, tho hopefully not so verbose!
First disk:
The Enemy Within
Good stuff. Kowalski infected by the Goa'uld larva, and running amok. A good introduction for me to the series. I've seen the movie, and enough of the show in the past not to be worried by not as yet having seen the pilot. I have to say, all the main characters are immediately likeable (and boy, doesn't Michael Shanks look like James Spader!) I'm going to like this show!
Emancipation
The SG1 crew run into a tribe, reminicent of the Mongols back on earth, who have little idea how to treat women. A fun, though unchallenging episode, feeling in many ways like a ST:TNG story. Enjoyable, and wow! Carter looked great dressed in local costume!
The Broca Divide
Another episode like the last one... enjoyable but not challenging. The crew come into contact with a group of people, some of whom are infected by a virus which turns them into primitives. Naturally, earth scientists cure them!
All in all, an encouraging start, very enjoyable. And looking forward to the next instalments.

Hey Hovis/Andrew, hows things?
The show only gets better. You have a fair bit of catching up to do, but it will all be worth it (Trust me  )
Is this your first time through Hove?
If so, there are a few dull eps in the first few seasons, but its worth it in the long haul. Like you say, some of the early ones are a little like TNG eps, but they do start to find there own feet by about season 4.
As for these eps, I though Enemy Within was pretty good. Its a shame that Kowalski gets killed so early on, as he seemed pretty likeable. He does crop up in a couple of alternate reality eps later though.
Emancipation was pretty rubbish. I always think that you wouldn't survive long in the space exploration business if you tried to impose your set of values on every culture you meet (although they are of course Americans).
Broca Divide is one of my faves from Season one. I think its the first time when you get to see what RDA can really do. I though he was excellent when he was devolved, but still trying to communicate with Frasier. I thought Frasier was pretty dopey not to realise the cure though. As soon as she mentions histamine levels, it seemed pretty obvious it would be something to do with the Anti-Histamines Daniel takes.
See ya
