Title: Pk Wars Pt 2 Discussion Thread
Description: Spoilers!
willowroolz - November 2, 2004 09:25 PM (GMT)
Here's the place to discuss Part II of The Peacekeeper Wars.
There will be spoilers.
willowroolz - November 2, 2004 10:12 PM (GMT)
Wow. Spectacular. No, actually that doesn't even begin to describe it. Think of all the greatest final episodes of other series: time to reassess and bow to the new daddy on the block.
Part II is just indescribably good. It ties up all the loose ends, deals with all of the issues and carries a simple message, beautifully realised. It is the most epic, explosive piece of sf to have graced a tv screen. It's even better than most sf movies I've seen. There's as much action on screen - and ten times as much emotion (I was in tears on several occasions, most notably the last ten minutes, which I watched twice and bawled both times) - as Star Wars or Aliens. It's small screen television with big screen mentality - Hollywood should look and learn. This is how it should be done.
I really am genuinely feeling far too involved and emotional at the moment to go into great detail, or even to spoil things for anyone else. It's difficult to describe how I'm feeling. I'm going to say it: I don't think they should make any more Farscape - this is just too perfect an ending to have anything else come along and mess it up. It did practically everything I wanted it to do, and more than I even dreamed was possible. And there's quirkiness (how many other series would have a character giving birth in the midst of a pitched battle?). And there is closure all round, for nearly all of the characters.
Farscape now has the ending it so richly deserved.
I'm not going to harp on about the acting, the effects, the music - you know what I'm thinking.
And the final scene, the last few lines of dialogue, the closing shot...
10/10... and so much more on top of that.
Thankyou John Crichton, Aeryn Sun, Chiana, Rygel, Pilot, Stark, Jool, Noranti, Moya, Talyn, Zhaan, Sikozu, Crais, Scorpius and brave, noble D'Argo.
It's been one helluva ride.

John to Little D: Your mother was right.
Aeryn to Little D: Your mother's always right.
John to Little D: Get used to that. (Holds Little D up to the stars) This is your playground.
:tear: :tear:

Wow.
I don't know what to say.
Steve pretty much sums it all up in his excellent post above.
I'll post more when I have had time to think about it all.

I can't believe it's finally over!
Einstein: Time....
John: ....Flies.
Einstein: Time....
John: ....Bandits.
Einstein: Time....
John: ...Wounds all heals.
Einstein: Time....
John: ...Rosemary and....
Einstein: Time....
John: Time ends.
willowroolz - November 3, 2004 10:43 AM (GMT)
Scorpius: This is insane, John.
John: Four years on and you're finally getting that?

willowroolz - November 3, 2004 11:17 AM (GMT)
John: "Is there anything I can do to help?"
Aeryn: "Oh, I think you've done enough already. If this was a Sebacean child, a pure one, it would've been born long ago. So how long is this going to take?"
John: "Well, on Earth it can last days."
Aeryn: "I have killed men for less."

Okay, I don't believe for one instant that, should there be further Farscape stories, D'Argo couldn't come back. For one, we didn't see him die. But, more interestingly, here's another theory that's doing the rounds. Sikozu and Grunchlk were still alive, but we didn't see what happened to them. What if they saved our favourite Luxan?
melian - November 3, 2004 12:51 PM (GMT)
Oooohhhhh. That could work. It's not too much of a stretch.
willowroolz - November 3, 2004 01:25 PM (GMT)
****SPOILERS****SPOILERS****SPOILERS****
Is D'Argo the character who has come the furthest? From his stereotypical, Klingon-wannabe beginnings to this courageous, noble warrior he is just behind John and Aeryn's relationship as the series' best character development. Anthony Simcoe really shines in the mini-series.
John: You're the closest friend I have.
D'Argo: You could've done better.
John: Nowhere in the universe.
melian - November 3, 2004 01:42 PM (GMT)

D'Argo: Hows the honeymoon?
John: The brochure was better......
It's hard to imagine life on Moya without D'Argo. I know it seemed that most of the crew were going their seperate ways....but it just doesn't seem right.
Whats Chi gonna do on Hyneria without him? I can't quite see her buying a farm and settling down to make a little wine. Can you?
willowroolz - November 3, 2004 02:01 PM (GMT)
Erm, no maybe not. But I think it was closure for her character, in that she had come full circle, had agreed to settle down with D'Argo again, and decided to do it anyway at the end. I wonder if Jothee went with her?
melian - November 3, 2004 03:01 PM (GMT)
Don't be vulgar
Lets not go down that path again. It's just wrong, even now with D'Argo gone.
Maybe Pip will go live with Rygel at his palace. Drive him and the rest of Hyneria insane.
willowroolz - November 3, 2004 03:05 PM (GMT)
Vulgar? Methinks you're reading more into it than I intended. :P
melian - November 3, 2004 04:10 PM (GMT)
Ooops :whistling:
Do you think John and Aeryn (and Little D)will stay on Moya?

A couple of interesting quotes I found whilst flicking through Paul Simpson's The Illustrated Season 4 Companion:
| QUOTE |
| Although La Bomba was bringing a number of matters to a head... it was also setting the scene for the next episode, and the fifth year. "Crichton had to do something that really annoys the Scarrans," [David] Kemper says, "and by blowing up his base you're pretty much assured Staleek is going to be pissed off!" |
Yeah, you could say that.
| QUOTE |
David Kemper:
"I have never written anything for the show, or to you, the fans, that I didn't believe in my heart to be true. Well, I do not honestly believe Farscape is over. I believe time and economics and the efforts of our extended family of viewers and critics will prevail. I believe I will work with all of my friends again in Sydney. I believe it will be on Farscape. Someday..." |
And, more poignantly:
| QUOTE |
Rockne O'Bannon:
"And what of Aeryn's pregancy? Surely the progeny of John Crichton and Aeryn Sun isn't going to let a little thing like a dimwitted business decision on a far distant blue marble of a planet blink him/her out of ever existing? A child from such a gene pool has got to be a willful little spitfire - determined to be born, to flourish - to ultimately mature to have adventures of his/her own." |
The last two quotes are from February 2003, a couple of months after cancellation and long before plans were revealed for The Peacekeeper Wars.
willowroolz - November 5, 2004 09:39 AM (GMT)
How brilliant and funny was the skit on
2001?
melian - November 5, 2004 09:53 AM (GMT)

That was a great image!
One of the things I loved about Farscape was the varied and hilarious sets and in jokes during the John/Harvey moments. Who can forget the Easter Bunny costumes?
I've been trying to remember the exact quote from where John and Co join Braca and the PK in the temple.
Braca: You're the reinforcements?
John: No, we're the band.
Then it goes something like.....
John: Looks like Kiss was your opening number.
D'Argo: I think I'm in the wrong band.
Have you found a site with a transcript or quotes Steve?
willowroolz - November 5, 2004 09:55 AM (GMT)
No not yet. I think everyone's still reeling from it. :o
melian - November 5, 2004 10:02 AM (GMT)
Pity.
Like you, I really don't want to watch it again until the DVD comes out, but I would like somewhere I could go for a quick quote hit :D
willowroolz - November 5, 2004 10:04 AM (GMT)
I'll keep checking. The Tourist's Guide hasn't been updated yet, and neither has Snurchers, and Farscapeworld doesn't really do quotes.
willowroolz - November 5, 2004 02:57 PM (GMT)
A couple more I've been able to find:
"Carry their baby, marry them off...what next? Let them move in?"
-Rygel
"I'm proud of you, son."
"Yeah, it's all genetics, Father. It's like the Luxan lottery."
-D'Argo and Jothee
"Goodbye, John. Thanks for your memories."
-Harvey
"Crichton, whenever we cross paths I leave the encounter transformed. And no more so than on this occasion. Thanks to you I found my own internal peace.Remember me, John, till we meet again."
-Stark
melian - November 5, 2004 03:28 PM (GMT)
I could cry all over again
willowroolz - November 5, 2004 03:32 PM (GMT)
You probably don't want this one then:
"Your father and I want you to have a name that means courage and strength. So we have chosen D'Argo Sun Crichton."
-Aeryn
melian - November 5, 2004 03:40 PM (GMT)

Cheers mate ;)
Although I think "Who's your daddy?" would have set me off more :(
I'm just glad I can't remember much of what Chi was saying to him, trying to get him to come with them
willowroolz - November 5, 2004 03:43 PM (GMT)
Or Aeryn screaming for help after John collapsed... :(
melian - November 5, 2004 03:45 PM (GMT)
Oh god! That was just horrendous. Chi and Stark seemed to take forever to get to them!
willowroolz - November 8, 2004 02:51 PM (GMT)
I noticed that the mini has currently scored an impressive 8.9 out of 10 at
imdb.com, from a total of 722 votes so far. I've voted! :)
melian - November 8, 2004 04:46 PM (GMT)
I'll head on over there and vote myself now!

Hi All,
I saw this a couple of nights ago. It was fantastic just to see the characters again. I had forgotten just how brilliant Crichton and Scorpius were. Both superbly written and acted (not to forget all the other characters of course, but these two are exceptionally good).
Heres a quick list of some of the great points....
**Spoilers**
When the temple was nuked (heartbreaking moment).
When the Idolon priest explained why Humans and Sebacians are so similar
The huge battles between Command Carriers and Dreadnaughts. I don't think we've ever seen more than one of each before. The SFX budget for the miniseries was very impressive.
Seeing Ryge swimming
Return of Jool and Jothee
Aeryn giving birth whilst firing a pulse rifle
Luxan Commandos fighting Scarrens.
Ending that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Little D
It was great to see so many loose ends tied up. This is what really hurt when the show was cancelled; You were left with too many unanswered questions. There are still some that they couldn't fit in, which was a shame. The Nebari plot (from Clockwork nebari) was a particular fave.
The only critism I can think of is that too much happened. It was hard to keep up. I may need to rewatch it all at the weekend to soak it all in. In retrospect, it was probably a bit too long for a single sitting. Shame they couldn't have stretched it out another hour or so.

I agree. I must admit when it was first touted as a four hour mini series I was very hopeful, but of course that included the ad breaks
I actually watched it over two nights, just to give myself time to savour it. I'm not going to watch it again until the R1 dvd comes out in January.
They definitely crammed a lot in, certainly in the first part you could almost see various episodes that they had planned for season 5 being slotted together (such as the harpoon sequence).
And they've still left enough hanging that there could be further adventures.
It may be wrong of me to say this, but I think it may cheapen this wonderful ending if they decided to do more stories. There's a wonderful sense of closure at the end which, to me, just felt right. There's something to be said for quitting while you're ahead, much as it pains me to say it.

I know what you mean. If they were to continue it, it would kinda cheapen the mini series. I can think of ways that both Jool and Dargo could appear in a future episode, but it would spoil their exits.
Without PKs and Scarrens, it wouldn't be the same. Heroes are only as good as the villains they fight. Who would they use? Nebari? They're good, but they aren't good enough to be the main villain. It would have been nice if they had been a third party in the Peacekeeper war, but I suppose there jsut wasn't enough time.
Also, it was painful enough to hear about the cancellation the first time. Time had healed that wound, but now its been reopened again. Not sure how many times I can go through a "Finally...on farscape" episode.

I totally agree. I don't think I've ever been as affected by a show being cancelled as I was about Farscape. Not even the cancellation of Angel hit me as hard
willowroolz - November 12, 2004 04:57 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I was absolutely distraught when I found out cos I was getting so excited about season 4 at the time and then - BANG - before the beeb even started showing it we knew it would be the last.
I remember the day I found out, I'd got to work and logged on to Farscapeworld and there was the announcement. I spent the rest of the day sending pleading emails to the powers that be. Some things are more important than work.
I can't even remember the number of shows that I've got into only for them to be cancelled, but Farscape was the one that upset me more than any other. Firefly might be close behind.

Exactly. That's the kind of thing I would be really worried about. One of the best things that ever happened in Star Trek (well, the movies anyway) was the death of Spock. Then they went and ruined it by bringing him back to life, rendering his sacrifice totally redundant. I don't want to see the same happen to D'Argo.

********* SPOILERS ***************
OK this made me cry for about half an hour.
D'Argo :o I kept expecting him to be saved by Jothee. What an amazing death scene however. Poor Chiana I felt every bit of her pain.
It is an amazing episode very much like a movie, George Lucas take notes this is how to end a series. It has to be one of the best endings I have ever scene.
I began crying when Aeryn finally gave birth and didn't really stop after that especially at the ending I couldn't have bared to see John die too.

I really hope there is more, especially a movie it would be amazing. To be honest peacekeeper wars would be fabulous on the big screen but not likely to happen.
Bakesh I totally agree about the Nebari subplot I think it would be a great place to start :)

Oh and I forgot to mention Moya plunging underwater and the docking web picking them up how great were these shots!

What I've always loved about Farscape, and it's very prevalent here, is that regardless of the action and the drama, it always ends with the characters. The last twenty minutes is perfect.
laughitupfuzzball - December 7, 2004 09:44 PM (GMT)
Yes if it weren't for the characters we love so much it would signify nothing other than great special effects.
Thats what so many films lack these days, just not interested enough in the characters.
willowroolz - December 8, 2004 09:17 AM (GMT)
I couldn't agree more. That's one of the reasons why the LotR films were so successful, they were the first big movies in years to give as much time to the characters as the spectacle.
I think, as far as Farscape is concerned, they usually get the balance right. The effects sequences are usually short sharp bursts, enough to make you go "Wow, I must watch that again", then it's back on with the story. The wormhole weapon is a case in point, we see a lot of it, but it's never on screen for more than a few seconds at a time. :)
laughitupfuzzball - December 8, 2004 10:02 AM (GMT)
Yeah they do get the balance right, although they enjoy making us suffer don't they
