Title: Pk Wars Pt 1 Discussion Thread
Description: Spoilers!

willowroolz - November 1, 2004 09:41 PM (GMT)
Okay, here's the thread for those of us who have now seen The Peacekeeper Wars.

This thread is for PART ONE only.

There will be spoilers below this post.

willowroolz - November 1, 2004 10:08 PM (GMT)
Well, first off, a huge thank you to Lisa for sending me a dvd of the mini-series. Lisa, you're an angel :D

This post is spoiler free.

I'm not going to do one of my big reviews - yet - or go into too much detail. I think further viewings are going to be required. There was so much going on in Part 1 that it was hard to take it all in. Apart from anything else I found that I was still feeling an air of disbelief that I was actually watching new Farscape. It's almost like finding an oasis in the desert. So I must admit there were times when the whole experience washed over me, when I was focusing on some small detail or line of dialogue (which, as usual, just sparkles) and didn't take in what happened next. My bad - I'll do better next time.

But the overall experience is just sensational. Farscape has never treated its audience like idiots. It doesn't feel the need to explain every plot nuance or beat you over the head in case you didn't understand. There has always been a complete lack of technobabble, which is one of the things that raises it above the other sci fi fare out there. Much like any other episode from the series, The Peacekeeper Wars is about the characters first and foremost.

With the lack of technobabble comes a couple of leaps of faith. There is a definite need for suspension of disbelief with a couple of things that happen early on (although one of them is very funny, and leads to some of the best lines in this half). Once some of the unanswered questions are dealt with (and they are dealt with very swiftly) it's on to business. There's no messing around. One of the huge benefits for this mini is that Kemper and co have had to boil down and condense the major plotlines they had planned for season 5 into three hours, and it shows. For the most part the plot is lean and mean, with just the right amount of exposition, and maybe a couple too many returning characters. At times I could almost sense where the events of a previously planned regular episode started and ended. But it's so effortlessly done (not to imply that there was no effort, because there was undoubtedly a huge amount of work put into the whole production) and told at such a breathless pace that it's easy to overlook such minor quibbles.

The cast look great and they are all on terrific form. And, most importantly, they all get something relevant to do. The whole production, from the sets to the music has the feel of a movie. The special effects are the best I've seen on tv. There are so many climaxes and cliffhangers just in this first half, so many points where I thought it was about to end.

And this is only part 1. Roll on tomorrow night.

Best line.......

Rygel to Jool
"Get your own fantasy, dreadlocks. They're having MY baby" :lmao:

Gosh. I don't know where to start.

What to make of the scenes and voice overs at the beginning and end? John lying motionless on the bed. Aeryn saying the 3 is no longer a scary number. That the war is over and the universe is safe. But that she won't except it if it means losing John

I'm not sure I want to watch the second part :fear:

willowroolz - November 2, 2004 09:28 AM (GMT)
Okay, things that confused me:

How did Chiana get her sight back?
Why did the Eidolons disperse John and Aeryn in the first place?

willowroolz - November 2, 2004 09:29 AM (GMT)
More Rygel:

"But I'm PREGNANT!!!"

I think I can answer the first one.

Chi and Stark went off to find a diagnosian who gave her new eyes. Does that help?

Yes it does, thanks. The playback froze up just as Chi jumped off the ladder into D'Argo's arms so I had to skip a few seconds - was that when they said that? If so I missed it completely. :)

melian - November 2, 2004 10:50 AM (GMT)
Yep. That was the bit ;)

I know I mentioned this before but do you really think Grunchlk is the spy? It just seems to obvious. And Farscape very rarely does what you expect

I've been thinking about the Eidolon query you had. I don't actually think it was ever really explained except for D'Argo saying that the crystalisation thing was sort of an accident.

Another great moment......

Aeryn : You ruined my life
John : I know

Just the looks on their faces when they say this.
Fantastic!!

willowroolz - November 2, 2004 10:59 AM (GMT)
Now, you know I think that Scorpius is behind it all in one way or another. There was too much unexplained about his involvement at the end of season 4, and he named Grunchlk as the spy way too quickly, and nobody even queried it.

Another great bit:

John: You said "yes"!
Aeryn: Yes, I did.
John: Sixty solar days. Any regrets?

melian - November 2, 2004 12:04 PM (GMT)
:lmao: Love that bit!!

Do you think John and Aeryn will ever manage to get married? Poor things, they have had the happy occasion brought to a sudden halt twice now

Aeryn to Rygel: You are ruining my wedding
John to Aeryn: Honey, you're aiming a gun at the baby......

willowroolz - November 2, 2004 02:21 PM (GMT)
I'm willing to bet they'll be married before the end of part 2

melian - November 2, 2004 04:53 PM (GMT)
I think that will be a pretty safe bet!

willowroolz - November 5, 2004 04:40 PM (GMT)
I've just been reminded about John saying to the Eidolons that he was telling his story for the 89th time, and this was the 89th episode

melian - November 8, 2004 12:27 PM (GMT)
Nice ;)

"Once upon a time, there was a boy named John........"

:D :D :D

******SPOILERS******

Where do I start. How wonderful to be watching Farscape again, what an emotional ride.

The first scene sets the tone for this amazing mini series. I want to see it on a big screen. I like the way that little flashes of the future and past are used throughout these episodes. How wonderful is Claudia's voice.

Rygel swimming is the best thing I have ever seen, how incredible are those scenes and what a great way to get the pieces back together in his stomachs. I wonder how much of this was written for what should have been season 5.

Its also a fantastic explanation for getting their baby into Rygel, Rygel of all the people to be a surrogate mother  Not only is it great fun but also frees Aeryn up for action.

The whole concept of the Iodons is marvellous and excellent w**k yet again by the creature workshop, I wasn't expecting that!

Out of the frying pan and into the fire should be Farscapes motto. On the second attempt to tie the knot, "Rygel you are ruining my wedding" Moya is invaded by Tragons with peacekeeper in tow. Love Chiana's new eyes tricks, and great fighting by the girls.

Aeryn to Stark "How can you best help"
Stark "By staying out of your way"

Lovely to see Jool back if not for long. How come she has gone a bit wild though, she would never have acted like that before.

Everything about this has an Epic feel, the vast dreadnaughts and command carriers in the battle we have waited for for years beautifully realised.

I can't believe how much action, twists and turns they managed to fit into 3 hours. Iodon temple & Jool destroyed, Lolan destroyed, the ancient Iodon destroyed, do our heros stand a chance. Its a beautiful scene between Chiana and D'Argo in space and wonderfully scored music, I want that as a screen saver.

There is so much going on in this its hard to mention all of it. Superb sets, special FX, acting, writing, casting, music everything is of the best quality and I am incredibly grateful that we got to see it. It does however prove beyond doubt that cancelling the series was the most stupid decision in the history of television!

I could go on about that for hours

I have to say, Brian Henson is very complimentary to Sci Fi in the interview with him on the first Starburst edition. He's at pains to point out that Sci Fi did everything they could to help him, but he just couldn't get the right financial package together to see the season made the way he wanted it.

 It doesn't matter it should have been made season 5 that is.

I am incredibly happy with the mini series however, its more than I hoped for

Absolutely. :)

Just a thought, but if the Eidolons where such hot shots at creating and preserving peace between species, and they had the PK to help them, how did they almost get wiped out? Who was hunting them down?

willowroolz - December 8, 2004 10:55 AM (GMT)
At a guess, people/races who didn't want peace.

Hello stranger :)

Nice to have you back :)

That w**k thing is overrated, you know

I know. Just when you think you have a few free minutes, all hell breaks loose and you have to go :(

See you soon :D

I have a theory on the Eidolon situation.

Obviously not knowing who John and Aeryn were, sitting on a boat in the middle of the ocean, they believed the security of the last survivors of their race was under threat.

Will post more tomorrow about my thoughts, but wow, they obviously spent a lot of money, the whole atmosphere was breathtaking

:lmao:

Poor John & Aeryn, apart from the woman most of the Eidolons seemed pretty agressive for a peace making species didn't they.

Its awesome isn't it. Good balance of planet based action and ship based I think they must have eeked out every ounce of their budget :)

laughitupfuzzball - January 17, 2005 09:57 AM (GMT)
Can I just say again why is Jool wild looking - not in keeping with her character and why does she Kiss John and say she knew he always liked her.

Jool and D'Argo had a nearly romance but Jool & John, when did that happen?

willowroolz - January 17, 2005 10:08 AM (GMT)
The same time John and Chi happened, obviously

Actually yeah I wondered that too.

Not too keen on the blonde extensions, looked like horsehair

Very nice

I was more moved about Jool this time round, not sure why.

I still don't get why they wouldn't leave though.

willowroolz - January 17, 2005 12:18 PM (GMT)
I have an answer for that, but it'd be spoilery ;)

laughitupfuzzball - January 17, 2005 12:43 PM (GMT)
answer it in the other thread then

willowroolz - January 17, 2005 12:47 PM (GMT)
Well, that would be the obvious thing to do I suppose...

laughitupfuzzball - January 17, 2005 12:58 PM (GMT)
 go on then

willowroolz - January 18, 2005 11:06 PM (GMT)
John to Aeryn: "Better have my dinner ready when I come back on that ship, now"

I also love the seen on Arnesk where John's walking round the temple renaming the gang as characters from The Wizard of Oz

jamiearmour - January 19, 2005 11:26 AM (GMT)
This may be a very obvious question but I have to ask it...

Farscape and I had a parting of the ways about half past Season2, and I only watched the odd episode after that, but I watched the repeat of PK wars Pt 1 last night. Very good, but where was Crace? Where was Tallon? Did I miss something?

I may have to do some catch up watching......

willowroolz - January 19, 2005 11:27 AM (GMT)
Crais and Talyn departed a while ago, Jamie. I won't say anymore than that in case you ever watch it. ;)

jamiearmour - January 19, 2005 11:35 AM (GMT)
So they won't be appearing on Sunday's part 2?

I liked Talyn. He was a little sweetie with big guns.
