A Centauri noble comes to Babylon 5 to transport an important Centauri relic in Londo's possession back to the homeworld. And a mysterious man visits all the alien ambassadors asking them an unusual question.

Ok guys, given that M's already burned ahead with this episode ( ), and given that certain others are dying to get to it, and given that sooner or later we have to move to a couple of three episode stints (to avoid an upcoming 2-parter spreading over two weeks) I've decided that this week we'll have a bonus airing. So, this one, is again, to be watched by the end of the week. That means that by the end of this week we should have completed 1x11, 1x12 & 1x13.

Next week we'll cover off 1x14 TKO and 1x15 Grail. The following week we'll watch 1x16 Eyes and 1x17 Legacies. Following that we'll have the 2-parter 1x18/1x19 A Voice in the Wilderness, before finally bringing the season to a close with a three episode stint, covering 1x20 Babylon Squared, 1x21 The Quality of Mercy and 1x22 Chrysalis.

Phew. There we go guys. Enjoy the bonus viewing ;)

Who, me? :innocent: ;)

Will add to this later as I want to say more about it than I am physically able to think of at the moment. And I may even watch it again beforehand. But for now, I'll just say, it was a pretty great ep.

Crichton Kicks - November 2, 2004 12:02 AM (GMT)
Yes you :P

I was going to review this one tonight as well, I watched it earlier, although, I think I'll let a few others have a bash before I chip in with my comments. Don't want to spoil anything

Phillip Culley - November 2, 2004 10:28 PM (GMT)
I've got several things to say here, but I think I'll wait for Ken to comment first :)

Crichton Kicks - November 3, 2004 09:39 PM (GMT)
Seeing as Ken's managed the near-impossible and fell asleep during this episode I can wait no longer

This episode, is arguably the most important episode of the season. There's so much going on both on and beneath the surface here. Fascinating, intruiging, compelling, all descriptions are appropriate here.

The first appearance of the enigmatic Mr Morden, one of Sci-Fi's greatest characters IMO. Just what IS his game ??

QUOTE
What do you want?

Huh? Again, one of the series most important phrases. In fact the whole character of Morden throws up so many questions on his own.

QUOTE
I've been out on the rim for a while, out of touch.

QUOTE
Find anything interesting?

QUOTE
Yes.

What ?? Who are these associates of his ?? WTF was that ship at the end of the episode ?? The fact that Morden comes up with The Eye would seem to draw somekind of link between them. Morden also made a point of seeking council with all the Alien Ambassadors, why not the Human representative, Sinclair ?? There was also some indication that both Delenn and later Kosh knew something about Morden

QUOTE
They're here....

QUOTE
Leave this place, they are not for you.

There's also some good stuff for Londo and G'kar, yet again. The lift scene is priceless, and for all their recent bickering, on both a personal and political level, we eventually see the extent of their convictions when faced with Morden's question. There are also disturbing signs around Londo. It's clear here that Londo, and by extension, the Centauri are both proud and ambitious, living off past glories, seeking a renaissance of power. Dangerous.

Then there's the Centauri Prophetess, or Seer;

QUOTE
Babylon will fall.

Sounds ominous. Although that's a potential future.

There's a first appearance for Lt. Corwin, who's a damned sight better in this, his first episode that the woman who's been there for a few episodes now.

Another homage from Joe, with the Raiders' call signs;

QUOTE
Six to One.

Another tip of the hat to The Prisoner with Number Six and Number One.

So, a great episode, that really opens up a whole new dimension to the series from here on. There's a great sting in the tail and numerous questions posed, like what was the mark on Delenn's forehead when Morden was in her presence ?? Just how did Kosh's encounter suit get damaged ?? Why did the Minbari want Sinclair in command of B5 ?? Will the fall of Babylon come about ??

Aaaarrrggghhhh !!!! Too, many, questions

I just watched this with the commentary - if there are any newbies out there with the DVDs DO NOT LISTEN TO THE COMMENTARY - it lays out strands over the whole arc and is the most spoilery thing I've ever heard in my life :D

As for the episode - in my first job I worked on a goal seeking program which was written by my boss who was a profeessor of mathematics. If you left too many starting points blank it came up with the error message "Questions, questions too many questions!" - that about sums this up :)

Fantastic stuff.

goth willow fan - November 3, 2004 10:24 PM (GMT)
Yes - if your new to the series do not listen to any of the commentaries or watch any of the extras on the discs - they all assume complete knowledge of the series and discuss major events not seen yet!

Number Six - November 4, 2004 01:11 PM (GMT)
A cracking episode and one that's virtually impossible for me to talk about withou giving anything away.

So who is this stranger Morden and what does he want? Kosh seems to know about him and doesn't seem to be afraid of him, unlike Delenn.

Why was that seer so afraid of shadows

What was that black spider-like ship that destroyed the raiders? Were they the same raiders that Ivanova was chasing the other day?

Why did the Minbari want Sinclair?

Will that particular future be the end of B5? (Reminded me of an episode of Blake's 7 entitled Orac in which the board's namesake shows the future destruction of The Liberator. I don't imagine that JMS could have seen B7 as well as The Prisoner though)

Will I ever stop talking rubbish?

Questions, questions.

On the contrary Tony. Joe loves The Prisoner, Blake's Seven and Doctor Who ;)

Didn't know that. Rare taste indeed

From memory Joe's quite the fan of British SF.

Finally got around to watching this this morning.

Excellent episode but as Angel has said one that leaves you asking more questions than it answers.

Who is this Mr Morden?

Why did the Minbari want Sinclair in charge of the station?

Was that ship at the end the same one that Sinclair's girlfriend saw in a previous episode, it looked familier from somewhere?

A great episode as I have said and probably one that had more in it than I first saw.

One of the best of the series so far.

Orac - November 6, 2004 10:10 AM (GMT)
Oh, dear... So much one could say about this episode...

Lots of those puzzle pieces here. Who is Morden? What does he want? Why does Mollari's answer satisfy him? What's with the mark on Delenn's forehead? Who did Kosh scuffle with in the corridor? What did Morden find on the Rim?

Questions, questions, questions... :ph43r:

A fantastic episode where something is always happening and where lots of information is unloaded on the viewer. Lots of information... ;)

*** begins usual B5 mantra ***

*** ...must not spoil...must not spoil...must not spoil... ***

I was going to rewatch this one, and comment more on it, but "for some reason" I haven't had much time to spend on the PC this week. ;)

So I'll just reiterate what everyone else said. Lots of questions raised, great episode, and now I know kinda what you were on about with noticing the "shadows" comments in previous eps.

Hovis - November 8, 2004 02:29 PM (GMT)
Hi, all

Due to having pc problems at home, I've pretty much missed out on the start of the B5 rewatch so I'm jumping in here, which seems as good a place as any to start!

I first watched 2 years ago when I first watched season One after James encouraged me to leap in and start watching. It was an episode he pointed out as being pivotal. At the time, it didn't do that much for me, although it's obvious that it's a very important episode. This time though... wow! It's an episode best appreciated second time around, IMO, having seen the rest of them. Having said that, I'm still waiting for season 5, so I'm wondering if there's some stuff I've yet to see.

I can't really say anything to add to what everyones said before me. But our first glimpse of Morden is fascinating... very enigmatic and quite clearly very dangerous. And beautifully played by Ed Wasser.

I've said elsewhere that I believe that the G'Kar/Molari relationship is one of the greatest elements I've seen in any cult/sci fi show, and that little scene in the lift encapsulates the whole thing. Great humour, laugh-out-loud funny, but so very, very dark. You wonder when you watch that little scene how things are going to pan out between the two of them. I don't know who the other guy in that scene was, but he was great. Terrific visual humour as he's listening to the verbal tennis match, and loved the way he scuttled off, leaving the two ambassadors to miss the lift!

Brilliant episode though. It does ask more questions than it answers but it does so in a way that leaves you wanting more, and not just scratching your head thinking 'what the f**k was that all about?'

Looking forward to 1.14 now!

Take care,

Andrew :upside:

Wel I think this episode said to me "there's more to this Morden fellow than we've seen here", though I think that area's pretty much covered already. :)

One thing that did spring to mind was that the Centauri homeworld may be facing some disruption, considering how "powerful" a trinket like The Eye is to the empire... could Londo try and be doing what the Lord (forget his name >.< ) was planning? He does seem to have the support of this Morden fellow and whatever associates he may be working with...

Oh yes, this episode also had one of those wondeful moments that you'd never see in Trek... Sinclair and Garibaldi having a chummly discussion in the loo... ...but wasn't that a female officer I saw walking past them into the loo after they'd finished?

willowroolz - February 6, 2006 01:36 PM (GMT)
Ah, Mr Morden, I wonder what he wants

Terrific episode. Like Farscape's A Human Reaction it marks the point where I went from simply liking the show to rushing into w**k the following day and asking everyone if they'd seen it and, if not, telling them that they should definitely watch it the following week. It changed me from a casual viewer into a fan :)

It sets up so much, not just for the rest of this season, but the rest of the series as a whole. Ed Wasser really does come across as a smug b@stard, so much that you just want to punch him in the mouth. Even though he looks like an inter-galactic Arthur Daley, when he disappears into shadow as he is talking to Delenn it is enough to send chills up and down your spine. Not only does it give him an incredibly ominous quality, but it also indicates so much more. Why does she react like that? What is the mark that appears on her forehead? Why does she say "They're here"? Who are "they"? Why does Mr Morden at first avoid Kosh? And then what happens during their later encounter that leads Garibaldi to remark that Kosh had requested supplies to repair his encounter suit??

On subsequent viewings, as Mr Morden asks the ambassadors a certain question, it is enough to have me telling them not to answer and, in Londo's case, begging him not to.

Then there's the series' first really big space battle, and it's a corker. The swooping shots along the hull of the station are amazing. And what the hell was that spider-like vessel that destroyed the raiders' command ship??

And then there's Sinclair letting Garibaldi in on his secret, and Garibaldi discovering that it was the Minbari who had agreed to him being made commander of the station, ahead of many others. Intriguing...

And as for Lady Ladira's vision :fear:

Terrific stuff :yahoo:

Kosh's Wibble of the Week:

"Leave this place, they are not for you."

Spoiler:

I love the way War Without End infers that this was always a red herring, only for Sleeping in Light to prove otherwise.
