Title: Serenity News (No spoilers)

LoobiLou - November 1, 2004 06:38 PM (GMT)
There's gonna be a lot of info released with the build up to "Serenity", use this thread to share it all :)

................................................................................

Taken from

At the recent White Room convention in Heathrow, "Firefly" cast members Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau and Morena Baccarin attended and talked about the upcoming film spin-off "Serenity".

"During the panel they said:

Morena: - 'I can tell you that you're not going to be disappointed. You're going to see a lot of things you've not seen before that you've wanted to see."

Nathan:- 'In the series, the mere mention of these would send fear into the heart of the bravest Jayne Cobb. In Serenity, the Reavers are right here."

Morena: - 'They're very scary."

Nathan: - 'You''d be having lunch, and they''d be across from you, and you'd be like sir, you lip is pinned back, and some of your hair is missing and your eye is hanging out."

Nathan refused to answer questions about Mal and Inara, and what we may or may not see regarding them in the film, but did start giving out Alliance dollar notes to anyone who asked a question, stolen from the set. Morena also told us, if the movie is successful, all nine actors are locked in. She has more action in the film, and actually got bruises on her neck one day from being manhandled.

Nathan has one scene, a close up where he falls into a close framed shot, hard, similar to his first death as Caleb in Buffy - he was dissatisfied with that, feeling his landing was too soft, so he was determined to make this new shot a harder, more realistic fall. Six takes later, he was regretting that decision. He has no nude scenes in the movie, but will be seen shirtless (all girlies in the audience are a mix of excited 'oohs" and disappointed 'ahhs").

The rebuilt ship took up a huge soundstage on Universal - the cargo bay & sickbay along one side, the top deck and bridge across the other. While they were filming the final scenes on the bridge, they were already tearing down the cargo bay across the stage - Nathan said it was very difficult to see it coming down a second time, as he had watched it come down when the series was axed. As already stated, the sets are largely the same, but there is 'more character, more detail" - Morena said it was like going home and finding someone had rearranged the furniture, the same but different. Nathan said 'there are cool flat plasma screens on the bridge."

Can't wait. The promise of a final look at the Reavers after so much build up is intruiging :)

................................................................

The Sunday Firelfly talk at the White Room Convention at the Heathrow Thistle, London, was scheduled to be Nathan Fillion (Captain Malcolm Reynolds), Morena Baccarin (Inara Serra) and also Summer Glau (River Tam), who had only popped in briefly on Saturday. The teaser trailer, as premiered at the ComicCon earlier in the year, had already been shown twice at the opening ceremony (the audience cheered so much the first time they missed most of the dialogue). Nathan was asked, although there were lots obviously lots of guns in the film, would there be any horses. His response was, "Summer?" Summer, instead of answering, started to laugh. The questioner then asked if he would ever shoot a horse again, to which he honestly couldn't say.

He was asked whether, given the chance, he would have preferred to continue on television, or do what has happened, and be given a theatrical release following a curtailed television run. His preference would have been the route of Star Trek, or more so Star Trek The Next Generation, with a long, successful television run, followed by many successful movies. Then they could live in mansions. And Summer would be all Sigourney Weaver.

Summer talked about Tim Minear, who was working on another film while they were making the feature, so he couldn't come to their parties, but he has seen the rough cut of the film, and he was very enthusiastic about it. It was commented on that with Firefly, they are very much doing the Buffy route in reverse, taking a television show and making a movie - did they hope the film would be any more successful? Summer pointed out that Joss didn't direct the Buffy movie. Nathan agreed - "The first film was flogged and raped. Universal did not try to control the Firefly movie in any way."

Nathan told us that Blue Sun would not feature prominently in the film, but was asked if he knew the secret of the corporation that was so ubiquitous in the show, that may have links with the Alliance government and the experiments on River. "Yes. I can't tell you. If you're clever, you'll figure it out." Nathan confirmed that Chinese language will be used in the film, and forced Morena and Summer to both recite their Chinese lines, which they duly did, and they did it well, too. Summer apparently has lots of Chinese dialogue "in that scene where the camera is going crazy all over the place," as Nathan described it.

The bootleg version of the trailer is already on the internet, and has been for some time, but having now seen a decent version on the big screen, this film will look amazing, and the wait for April, and my next chance to meet these fantastic people, is too long away.

...................................................

From what I’ve read, it’s not the real trailer, just some clips that have been put together for the comic con – but it does feature Reavers. I’ll have a look round for it and post it if I find it – It Looks doubtful though

Serenity Jumps From TV

Joss Whedon, who wrote and directed the upcoming SF movie Serenity, told SCI FI Wire that it's been a challenge adapting his low-rated Fox TV series Firefly for the big screen. "It's incredibly hard, you know, building a story that doesn't repeat or contradict what we've already done, that satisfies the fans, and yet is really made for people who have never seen the show," Whedon said in an interview on the film's set at Universal Studios in Los Angeles last August. "[It's] incredibly tricky. There's pitfalls everywhere."

Serenity, set 500 years in the future, picks up the story of the intrepid crew of the Firefly-class transport ship Serenity. Fox canceled Firefly in the middle of its first season, but fan enthusiasm for the show and its subsequent DVD release persuaded Universal Pictures to green-light a movie adaptation. "It's the hardest story I've ever had to structure," Whedon said. But, he added, "once I get writing these people, it's the easiest thing in the world, because I know them so well. The other thing is, a TV show is built around slow development of character. A movie ... is built around momentum. They're very different things. So ... you have to let some things drop, and you have to speed some things up, and you have to sort of know which ones are which."

Serenity also marks longtime TV veteran Whedon's feature-film directorial debut. Whedon has been critical in the past about how his movie scripts for such films as Alien: Resurrection and the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie have been realized. "After Alien: Resurrection I said the next person who ruins one of my scripts is going to be me," he said, with tongue in cheek. "And I think I'm doing a fine job. Actually, I think that the director on occasion could use a little more imagination and the writer could have shut up occasionally. We fight, but we're still getting along better than I usually do."

Seriously, Whedon said, "It's been great. ... Unlike TV, I have the time to really explore what it is I'm doing and to go back and reassess every day. But the piece is so fluid, because it's a domino effect. Every time you shoot a scene, it affects 50 other scenes. It's not like you have eight days and you know exactly what you need, and you're out and you go on to the next one. It's constantly shifting. Hopefully not so much that it doesn't know where it's going." Serenity, which is in post-production, opens April 22, 2005. Universal Pictures is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

Serenity Surprises Whedon

Joss Whedon, writer and director of the upcoming SF movie Serenity, told SCI FI Wire that shooting the feature-film version of his Fox TV series Firefly is every bit as stressful as churning out an hour of TV drama every week. "It's been as stressful, and I thought it'd be less stressful," Whedon said in an interview during a break in filming last summer at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. "I thought I'd be, you know, golfing in between takes and writing sonnets."

Whedon makes his feature-film directorial debut with Serenity after having created and run TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly, many of whose episodes he both wrote and directed. With Serenity, he said, "two things have not worked in my favor. One is, although I don't have three shows to run—and believe me, nothing will ever be as hard as that was—the movie takes up your attention in the way that three shows do. All of the creative energy that you're usually pouring into telling 20 to 40 stories a year, you're pouring into one, and you find you need it. You find you wake up in the middle of the night and go, 'His pants are too baggy.' And it's important. You have to watch everything so carefully, because every mistake that you make is going to be 40 feet high. Whenever you think, 'Well, maybe that's good enough,' I just say to myself: 'Cineramadome.'"

Still, Whedon said, he's finding the filmmaking process surprising, even after having produced 13 hours of Firefly. "You really are surprised by what you do in a way that you're not so much with TV," he said. "Because, even though I know these guys—even though [we're] on Serenity, which are known quantities to me—I'm still surprised, more than I ever have been in TV. I'll do, you know, 10 takes and watch [them] and go, 'Boy, this first one was better than the one with all my notes in it. Remind myself not to tell him that.' ... [The movie] talks back to you, and it does it while you're still making it. In TV, it doesn't do that 'til you're done, which is what's different about it." Serenity, starring Nathan Fillion, is in post-production with an eye to an April 22, 2005, release. Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

Serenity Gets Darker

Nathan Fillion—who stars in the upcoming SF movie Serenity, based on Fox's canceled series Firefly—told SCI FI Wire that his character, Capt. Mal Reynolds, will be a little darker than he was allowed to be in the TV show. "I think he's still on that same vein," Fillion said in an interview during a break in filming at Universal Studios in Los Angeles last August. "I think if anything, I think he's a little darker than he was before. I think he's a little more empty than he was before. He, too, has had the rug pulled out from under him a couple of times since we've known him in the series. And I also think that, because we're in a film, another difference versus television is we can be allowed to be darker. ... We don't have a ... TV producer saying, 'Make him more likable and funny.'"

Fillion plays the captain of a small transport ship 500 years in the future, leading a ragtag crew of survivors from a galactic civil war. The film will feature the series' creepy cannibalistic renegades, the Reavers, and also give Reynolds a love interest, Fillion said. As for making the film, he added, "It's a little different. We had eight days to put on a one-hour show. Now we've got the better part of three months to put out a two-hour show. So the timing is a little different. But certainly I can tell that the quality is also extremely different."

As for his acting style, Fillion said, "I haven't made any drastic changes or anything. I have noticed that my nose is a lot bigger on screen. It's like, there are times when if you could put your arms up, that's about how wide my nostrils are. I've always known I have big nostrils, but now I could park a Buick in them." Serenity is slated for an April 2005 release. Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

Serenity Star Ready For Film

Nathan Fillion, who stars as Capt. Mal Reynolds in the upcoming SF movie Serenity, told SCI FI Wire that he doesn't feel a lot of pressure in his first major feature-film lead role, based on his character from Fox's canceled TV series Firefly. "I don't feel a lot of that pressure," Fillion said in an interview during a break in filming at Universal Studios in Los Angeles last summer. "My schedule is much the same as it was on the series: I'm here a lot. But I get to perform with everybody in the cast. I get to have great scenes with all of these great characters that I fell in love with. I don't feel a great deal of pressure. You know what? I'm starting to feel the thing, now that it's wrapping up, [where] I just really hope people enjoy this movie. I really hope they do. I hope folks that aren't fans—that weren’t fans of the series—will catch this and maybe go get the DVD collection and [see] what [they were] missing."

Serenity picks up the story of the short-lived Firefly, about the ragtag crew of a transport spaceship 500 years in the future as they eke out a living in the wake of a galactic civil war. Fillion's Reynolds is the captain of the ship and a war-weary veteran of the losing side in the civil war. "I'm here having a great time with some very talented actors, with a very talented director [Firefly creator Joss Whedon], who are all my good friends. I'm in a very safe place here. I don't come to work feeling, 'There's a lot of pressure on me.' I come to work saying, 'What do we get to do today? Who am I going to get to hang out with today? Who's on the guest list, the call sheet, today that I get to hang out with?'"

Fillion added, "Joss has told me he's under a little more pressure. But you know what? I don't see it. I think when we were doing the series, I saw him working on three series [Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly]. We didn't see him near as often as we would have liked, because he's great to have around. He's a real warm presence on a set. His presence on set is calming. He's very specific in what he wants. He's very confident in his choices, and it's nice to have him around." Serenity is slated for release in April 2005. Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

A Visit to the Serenity Set

Joss Whedon stands, hoarse-voiced, telling the many flanking journalists, "Today, I'm deciding whether or not to use this shot. Whether it's realistic enough or it looks too fancy."

There is currently a woman and two men hanging from wires in a futuristic bar. This is the set of Serenity, Joss Whedon's adaptation of his "failure" of a TV show Firefly.

Serenity follows a crew, headed by Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), through their adventures in space battling the evil Alliance and reavers. If this doesn't sound too familiar, don't fret. The show was cancelled after a short time on the air, yet Universal Studios is giving Whedon a chance to resurrect the project for the big screen.

Producer Barry Mendel said the best-selling DVD set of the TV show didn't even help Universal latch onto the film. "They were already onboard before they came out. (Universal execs) are big believers in Joss; I think they think he is someone who is going to be making films for a long time," said Mendel.

The challenge for the cast and crew was transitioning the show to a big-screen film. "We love the show and we want to preserve everything great about the show," continued Mendel. "But, we also give reason for someone to get out of their house and pay for something they used to get for free."

Summer Glau, who stars as River remarks about the positive changes that come along with a big-screen budget. "We have a bigger budget, which is fun, and we get more time to do each scene. But really, the way Joss shoots is so specific, we wondered how different it would get from the series. He knows exactly what he wants so when we come in to do a scene."

As for those who don't know the TV show well, Glau reports that there are some flashbacks and some moments for new people to catch up.

When pressed for information on how her character evolves in the film,Glau only drops this enigmatic hint: "My character was just getting started and now, in the film, you really going to see an explosion of what really is going on with River."

Whedon believes that Serenity is Glau's chance to rise to the occasion. "She really stepped up to the plate; she's not in the corner babbling all the time anymore. She's got more to do and her presence is pretty luminous," said Whedon.

Whedon finds the task of directing a movie to be tough, but he's not one to back down at the challenge. "I thought it would be less stressful. I thought I'd be golfing in between takes and writing sonnets. Two things have not worked in my favor, although I don't have three shows to run, and nothing will be as hard as that was, the movie takes up your attention the way three shows do. All the creative energy that you usually pour into creating 20 or 40 stories a year, you are pouring into one and you find you need it."

What Whedon finds most important is allowing new viewers to watch the film with fresh eyes, while still being able to please his rabid fan base. "It's incredibly hard. Building a story that doesn't repeat or contradict what we've already one that satisfies the fans, but is made for people who haven't seen the show is incredibly tricky. It's the hardest story I've ever had to structure. Writing these people is the easiest thing in the world cause I know these people so well. TV shows built around slow development of character's movies are built on momentum. They are two very different things. You have to let some things drop and you have to speed some things up and know which ones or which."

Whedon does shy away from jinxing a sequel, but does mention it. "I think of this as an absolute one-shot. Could it sustain more stories? Well I obviously designed their world and these characters and this ensemble to sustain seven years for us. So yeah, there could be more. We'd love to do more. We have to make this one good enough to deserve that."

As Whedon looks again at the current scene, he remarks, "I'm trying to stay away from a Matrix-y kind of aesthetic. I don't want people doing anything they can't do, to an extent."

Diving Into Serenity's River

Summer Glau, who reprises the role of River in the upcoming SF movie Serenity, told SCI FI Wire that the film version of Fox's canceled Firefly will resolve many questions about her enigmatic character. "We were setting up all the characters [in the TV show]," Glau said in an interview during a break in filming last summer at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. "We were going back into the past and trying to set up each storyline for each character. And my character was just getting started, and now in the film you're really going to see an explosion of what's really going on with River. It’s going to be exciting."

In Firefly, the crew of a transport ship 500 years in the future found themselves inadvertently aiding the escape of River from a top-secret Alliance facility, with the help of her brother, Simon Tam (Sean Maher). There were hints that River had acquired some martial arts and weapons skills, which the film Serenity will develop, Glau said. "I do a lot of wire work, so I get to do a lot of flipping and running up walls, so it's really exciting," she said. "I'm not a gymnast. I still don't like being upside down. If I don't know what my legs are doing up there, it makes me nervous."

Glau added, "When they first met with me to try to figure out what my physicality was, we went over things, and what we ended up with is kind of a blend of wu shu, kung fu and kick boxing. It's kind of tailored to my abilities, because I was a ballet dancer before I started acting. And so, you know, looking at the way I moved and seeing what kind of a body type I had, that's what they chose."

Glau said that it took only a little while to reacquaint herself with River once production started last spring. "I was very nervous," she said. "I was very nervous. I hadn't played River for a year and a half. I was so close to her in the beginning and through the whole series. And then when I came in for my first read-through with the entire cast, I was shaking and sweating, and I was really scared. And then after the first few days it felt like I'd never left." Serenity, which also stars Nathan Fillion and is directed by series creator Joss Whedon, is slated for release in April 2005. The film is being released by Universal, which is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

Straight from the horses' mouth :

Are you guys starting to hear that fanfare? Those distant drums? Are you slapping on your side-arms, pulling on your long brownish-colored coats and thumbing your crisp new bills in anticipation of the cinematic event of the year? Well, it's official: on April 22nd you, the true the blue the loyal, can step right up with the rest of America and WAIT FIVE MORE MONTHS.

Heh. See, sometimes studios shuffle around release dates...

Okay. Don't panic. right now you're panicking. you're thinking, "how could they do this to me?" But what you SHOULD be thinking is: "How could they do this to JOSS?". Seriously. That pity is mine and I want it back.

So what happened? Well, nothing terribly original. April got crowded with a lot of titles aimed at a similar demographic, and the studio decided September was a clearer corridor for the film to make the kind of impact it should. This isn't about a lack of confidence in the film -- in fact, they told me this before they even saw it. And now they have seen it, and unless they're way better liars than I'm used to, they dug it. Actually, they dug it pretty large, which is a good sign since there's not a single finished effect in the film. There's no reworking the end, no reshoots, no "does it have to be in space?". It's just a marketing issue. Now you'll get to watch lots of trailers in the summer. And hopefully, by the time it comes out, other people, people who ain't us, will get a whiff of what we're up to, and come along too.

I love this movie. I HATE waiting to show it too you. I felt pretty much the way I imagine you're feeling right now when they told me. But these guys know what they're doing, and they're trying to protect their investment, not bury it. So I gotta be a grown-up. The release date is September 30th. Hopefully it won't change again.

Spread the word. Keep the faith. And gleam the damn cube already.

Adam Baldwin rallies Browncoats over Serenity delay

So, I'm walking back from Starbuck's today and guess who comes riding up on his bicycle: No... not John Mellencamp. JOSS, it was Joss.

So he says, " I was going to call you today" and I says, "About the postponement?"
"Yeah, I figured if anyone would already know it would be Adam, MR. ONLINE GUY" So he proceeds to tel me that this will be a blessing in disguise and the studio is really happy with the film and wanted more time to gear up a really kick-a$$ marketing SCHEME. Which they will.

Then we chit-chatted for a while about family and stuff... Caterpillars... the length of the show... the fact that Jayne is really cool... and funny... and strong looking.... and "Oh, by the way," he asks, "are you guys free next thursday for a screening?"

So I says, "Hmmmmm I'll check my schedule but I think perhaps maybe it will be a possibility that I will attempt to squeeze it in." What's that guy's name again? Oh yeah... Joss. The boss. AKA G-d.

So anyway guys, this is good news, let's take it as GOOD NEWS. It felt rushed to me anyway. Like the series did. Now we have plenty of time for all of those summer-esque trailers and OSCAR (trademark) considerations.

Love and Serenity Always,

A.B.

Jewel Staite 'not shocked' by Serenity announcement

24 November 2004

Okay.......

So I know there's a bit of panic and disappointment in the air, re: the delaying of the premiere of "Serenity".... but this isn't such a bad thing! The delaying, I mean.

I can say completely honestly that I am not shocked that there would be a delay. This is Hollywood. This happens all the time. And it's for good reason, too. From what I am told, Universal is very excited about this movie. They love everything they've seen, and what they HAVE seen is without most of the special effects, which is saying a lot. Perhaps they came to some realizations about what needs to be done to market our movie properly. Or maybe they just want to make sure that it has the best opening weekend it can. They really do care. They're not doing this to be assholes. They're doing it for business reasons. Studios like to make their money back—trust me. Don't worry. Just think of it this way: by the time the movie actually opens, you will be peeing your pants with anticipation (hopefully), and you'll want to see it triple the times you were planning to see it in the first place!! (right?)

And also, this just gives us (meaning us as in actors and us as in the rest of you, the devotees as I proudly like to call you) more time to seek new converts. More time to buy your friends those DVD box sets. More time to get the word out about the film, so it can open successfully and so we can do a couple more. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING happens for a reason. I am a firm believer in that.

In the mean time, we will continue making appearances at conventions, as long as we are invited and are able. There is news of one in February that a lot of us may be attending, and a lot of you know about the one in the UK in late April of next year. We are spreading the word as best we can!

For non-Serenity news, my movie I wrapped not too long ago, Widow on the Hill, will be airing on the Lifetime network at the end of January. And as far as I know, THAT has not been pushed. Ha ha. Not that funny, I know.

It will all w**k out for the best. And that's not a comment from my faith. It's just simply a fact.

Now, go watch your Firefly DVDs again!

Jewel

Summer's Response to the delay of Serenity's release
Posted : 24 Nov 2004 21:00 am
Post subject: "From Summer"

"It was heartbreaking to find out about the release date. I have waited so long and now I find that I have to wait that much longer.

"I would like to say say a special thank you from me for the continued support of the fans. I am sad but trying to see the best in this decision. I trust Joss. When Joss told me about the change he was very positive about the response he had from the studio. They were very enthusiastic.

From what I gathered they feel that April is too crowded and they want to promote us through the summer. They are trying to decide the best way to market us. I appreciate their support but I ache for all of the fans who have been patiently supportive and now have to wait that much longer."

Adam Baldwin on seeing the rough cut of 'Serenity'

It's great. "Serenity" is a great movie.

With temp effects, the BDM still kicks a$$!!! You'll love it! Every single one of our beloved cast of characters (and some newbies) are well-served and showcased in a loving and thrilling way... even Jayne. ;- )

Joss is our hero!

We all went out to Nate's favorite sushi restaurant afterwards and had a grand time, hic!

Can't talk story, but the movie is one of the most unique and exciting film experiences I've ever witnessed. Riveting...

I'm sure you'll all agree.

Informational chestnut:

Apparently there will be some test screenings in the very near future. I know not when, or where. Mitch can, if he is available, certainly give the particulars about the protocols of this stage in the process; and how the reactions in those tests affect the forward momentum of the BDM. That marketing and promotional stuff is way above my pay-grade. :- )

Serenity and love to all,

A.B.
(can't wait to see it again)

Jewel Staite comments on seeing Serenity.

I know I just wrote not too long ago, but I have some news.

I just saw Serenity.

What to say about this without giving too much away? I was moved. I was proud. I was excited and breathless and open-mouthed and tearful. I still can't believe we were able to do this, to make this movie and to w**k with each other again. We got another shot, and I think we made the most of it. It's just the right amount of shocking and just the right amount of "Firefly" goodness... but it does stand on its own.

I have faith in this thing. I cannot wait until the rest of you get to see it. I can't wait to see your reactions and hear what you have to say. I hope you love it as much as we do.

We had a chance to have dinner with Nathan (who put us up in his home while we were in town... since we live in Vancouver-- for the moment) and the rest of the cast, and Joss afterwards. It was so nice to see everyone, and to share my first "screening" with the rest of the troops. I felt unbelievably proud of everyone.

Anyway, I just had to share. The wait, I hope, will be worth it. If you liked Firefly, you'll love this! And not just 'cause it's, like, three times the size and two hours long!!

Love, Jewel

Nathan Fillion on Serenity, Joss Whedon and Firefly's cancellation

NATHAN FILLION INTERVIEW ('Capt. Malcolm Reynolds'):

How much do audiences have to know about “Firefly” before watching “Serenity?”
They set up the movie in such a way that somebody just walking in off the street who’d never seen “Firefly” could actually enjoy “Serenity.” But knowing that there’s a DVD set available, I would feel that it would make a lot of sense – a lot more sense – to go get the DVDs, or borrow someone’s DVDS, or rent them, however you want to do it, but invest in the characters before you get into that movie because then you can start loving them off the top. You don’t have to spend any time getting to know them or getting to understand who they are. You can have a history on everybody and a lot of things will make more sense. You’ll just know the characters are being true to themselves, and true to who they are, and true to their relationships, if you’ve seen the DVDs and know their histories.

How does w**king with Joss on the TV series compare to w**king with him on the movie? Was there much a change in how he handled things?
It’s exactly the same with the exception of the level of pride we have is far higher. Our sin is pride. We had the sin of pride doing that movie. We were so happy to be back together, number one. And to be doing “Firefly” or “Serenity” again.

Speaking of that, why is it “Serenity” instead of “Firefly?”
Because “Firefly” was the name of the TV show, and it’s no longer a TV show. It’s a permutation of that.

Will there be a "Serenity" sequel?
If this first movie does well… We’re all roped into a trilogy. We all signed for a trilogy so if this first one does well, we’re going to do two more.

So let’s say you do three movies, can you go back and do a “Firefly” TV series again after that?
I hope so. Daddy’s got bills to pay!

What was the most exciting day on the set?
Day #1 would be extremely exciting. I got to do a lot of stunts. I got to do a lot of adventurous stuff. On the series we had a little ATV, a little 4-wheeler that we used to ride around on. In the movie, it’s a big old hovercraft and I got to drive that thing around and smash it up and crash it. We had a great time. I got to shoot people. It’s always exciting when you shoot people (laughing). Any kind of stunt day is extremely exciting. w**king with Chiwetel Ejiofor, what a talented man. w**king with him is always very exciting. And it was always good whenever we had the whole cast, when the cast was assembled together. We would be in the kitchen and it would be just like old times. A couple of things were a little bit different with the sets and whatnot, but it was just like old times.

How did Joss balance all these characters?
Oh, now you’re asking a question to me that I... Joss is a brilliant man. He’s one of those guys that is so very, very clever, he can leave you in the dust intellectually. But he’s one of those guys that keeps his feet on the ground and doesn’t ever make you feel stupid. He’s far more intelligent than I. How he does it? I don’t know. If I could kill him and take that talent I would.

Does he allow you to play much with his words, or does he hold you tightly to the script?
The words are completely his. He’s very clever with his words and there’s a certain kind of Joss-speak, “Firefly”-speak, that we were using. What with the Chinese and the old-timey Western talk, almost a Southern feel but no accent. There’s a lot of weird things going on. But the words are all his. Every once in a while I would come up with an idea and say, “I’m going to try doing this.” He’d say, “Oh, I love that!” or “When you do that thing…not so much.” (Laughing) Or, “That was awesome except for the part where you did something on your own. I don’t know what you were thinking.”

Is "Serenity" going to be Universal’s big movie of 2005?
Let’s hope. Well, we were going to open in April, we got pushed back to September. A couple of big blockbusters – I say a couple of big blockbusters but there’s like a monumental amount of movies coming out around April and the summertime. And they didn’t want “Serenity” to be that movie that was really great but nobody ever heard of it because it got lost. So they pushed it back to September and said, “We’re going to push it past all the summer blockbusters. By the time it comes around, everybody will be ready.”

How much do you credit the Internet and the “Firefly” fan base with getting “Serenity” made?
I credit Joss Whedon number one. I credit the fans number two. I credit the Internet number three – with a close tie for third with the DVD series.

Why did they cancel the series so early on when it didn't get a chance to find an audience?
This is the question that everybody asks me. If I knew the whys and wherefores of studio producers and production, I’d be a smarter man and get paid more than I do - Which is $50. That’s my going rate (laughing).
