Title: 3.06 Eat Me

After Jool damages the transport pod, she, John, D'Argo and Chiana are forced to land on a damaged Leviathan. As they scrounge the ailing ship for parts, they discover it's not so abandoned as it initially appeared. Meanwhile, an unexpected starburst by Moya brings Aeryn and the remaining crew to a horribly wounded Talyn and Crais.

Great episode, I'm looking forward to seeing what people seeing this for the first time are going to say, particularly regarding Crichton's twinning.

It's gloriously dark episode, a crippled diseased leviathon 'its oozing puss' makes a brilliant stage for this horror episode. Jool is as annoying as ever and Chiana punches her for us(Jool does grow on me btw). She is however used well for showing fear at their predicament, she was even willing to kill herself to end her fears.

I love Chiana in this episode (surprise), she portrays brilliantly her shock at being twinned trying to convince herself that the Chiana that dies is only a clone to relieve herself of the guilt, and also the doubt that she wasn't a clone. I didn't believe that D'Argo would really be dead but wondered how they were going to solve this. His rescue by Chiana is quite funny.

It also shows through Chiana's grief how deeply she still cares for him.

Back to the leviathon and the pilot, eeeww, they eat them! Another reminder that leviathons are living creatures, the scavengers gnawing at his fleshy cables and how shocking is it when the Pilot reveals that they let him grow back his arms only to eat them again. I really liked seeing another leviathon and another Pilot and although they look the same although one is 'disarmed' there is a totally different, defeatened personality that comes through.

Poor old John his luck hasn't changed and he starts to think that their predicament is all his fault. He thinks that his actions lead to D'Argo and Chiana's death, questioning his actions again.

Kaarvok is quite the hammer house of horror villain a little annoying at times, he could have been more frightening but the nightmare situation they are in and the story makes up for that.

A mention for the return of Tayln and Crais and also Rygel's willingness to abandon them to save his hide, Aeryn's wonderful quote

' If you try anthing while I'm gone whatever you have in place of mivonks and wherever they are, they will be gone when I get back'. - I think she meant it

A great twist at the end, what did everyone think of that!

Yay! Time to get this show back on the road! C'mon Lisa and Karen (and Jon if you're up for it ;) )!

"Abbott and Costello in the house of horror." - John Crichton

This is one hell of a scary episode, laden with atmosphere. Guy Gross's score is marvellous, with both it and the sound effects making full use of the Dolby Digital soundtrack to genuinely unsettling effect. And the lighting and directing are superb, utilising the trademark off-kilter camerawork for all it's worth.

I find it a genuinely haunting moment when the gang come across the Leviathan, only to realise that it's not Moya upon sight of the Peacekeeper control collar. It's a beautiful reveal, panning out from behind the asteroid. Very well done.

On the face of it, this was probably regarded as a money-saving exercise, using existing sets, telling a two-stranded storyline, even using the Pilot puppet to portray two different characters. But it's all so effectively done that you totally believe it's a different vessel. There's a touch of Aliens about Kovhu's innards, walls coated in some kind of excretion and ceilings dripping slime or puss.

"Whoa! Oh, man, that smells worse than Rygel!"
"Well, almost..."
- John Crichton, D'Argo

Karen and Lisa will know that I get very distressed when I see anyone harming Pilot, and even thought this is not our Pilot, it still makes me angry. Such peace-loving creatures treated in such a way! There're echoes of DNA Mad Scientist here, with the Xarai cutting off the Pilot's arms to eat them, allowing his arms to grow back and then cutting them off again to eat some more.

"They cut your arms, and when they grow back, they hack 'em off again. Why the hell would they do that?"
"Because, because, because they're eating meeee!"

- John Crichton, Pilot

This pilot lets on that Kovhu was a prison ship for the criminally insane, part of a Peacekeeper convoy that had been attacked by Scarrans, and had been carrying just one inmate - Kaarvok. And then, of course, Kaarvok harpoons the poor thing anyway. :(

The first couple of acts are very spooky. Chiana, foraging on her own, runs into a lot of trouble and gets involved in a frightening firefight as she fends off a horde of the Xarai. It's very well shot, and it's great to see Pip looking after herself so well - and her warcry is right up there with Xena's.

Of course, things take a left turn upon D'Argo's apparent death, which is nicely handled as Alex says, allowing Crichton to fall back on the uncertainty over his decisions brought about by recent events (see Self Inflicted Wounds and ...Different Destinations).

"D'Argo's dead. Chiana's dead. Oh yeah. Oh yeah, I can feel it. That sick Hammer Horror son-of-a-bitch, he's gonna be sucking my brains through a sippee straw and it ain't making me feel comfortable!" - John Crichton

Meanwhile, Moya makes an unplanned starburst, leading Aeryn, Rygel and Stark to a crippled Talyn and badly injured Crais. They are not sure who or what attacked the young gunship, but Rygel is determined that they should not be around when the aggressor returns. Aeryn vetoes this, naturally.

"Listen, you bartantic bitch, Talyn's supposedly the meanest, deadliest, all-time yave-of-the-yuvo fighter ship. But somebody, something, beat the yotz out of him." - Rygel

There's still time for some comedy moments, my particular favourites being Chi's reaction to being hit by Jool, and D'Argo's "predicament" when Pip finds him with Belima. Some of Anthony Simcoe's expressions in that scene are hilarious.

In a way, though, this episode is all about the ending. D'Argo is copied, but the copy is dead. Chiana is copied, the copy is dead. Crichton is copied, the copy is... with him aboard Moya. It's not a clone, it's not an evil twin, it's not a robot - it's a pure, 100% copy. It is him down to the last detail, and no-one knows which one is the original, a point proved as the two play rock/scissors/paper with each other (nice touch, that).

There's no easy get out here. Whereas other series have gone down the tried and trusted route of having doubles of their characters, had some fun with it but restored the status quo by the time the credits roll, Farscape takes it further than ever before. The other Crichton is here to stay. How many other series would have the balls to do this? Answer: none, zero, zilch, nada.

And, finally, (I said I'd come back to this) we have the answer as to why there is a second, almost echoing voiceover in the opening credits this season: it's the two Crichtons talking, one after the other. Brilliant.

A very good episode in its own right, but - in terms of season three and beyond - a hugely important and daring step for the series to take.

Get ready, it's going to be a rollercoaster.

Exactly, its not a comedy exercise as it is in most shows or showing a dark and light personality its just what it is, two Crichtons. How do you deal with knowing that there is suddenly two of you? Love the Rock/Scissors/Paper game at the end and the two Crichton's expressions.

I too get upset about Pilot being harmed and also Moya & Talyn. The Pilot is in such distress it reveals the true horror of their situation.

What did you think of Jool at this stage?

:D

willowroolz - November 9, 2004 08:43 AM (GMT)
I actually never had a problem with Jool. Sure, she's irritating to start off with, but then she's supposed to be, isn't she? I have a lot of sympathy for her at this stage because she's having to adapt to the situation the same as everyone else did in the beginning, she's just used to a different way of life.

I loved her scared little run back to the transport pod, that's one of the funniest moments in the episode.

laughitupfuzzball - November 9, 2004 12:25 PM (GMT)
 Yes that funny little run back to the pod was funny

When I first watched these eps of Season 3 though I really didn't like her, maybe because I liked Zhan and I missed Zhan's presence.

Jool did grow on me an awful lot though especially when doing comedy

willowroolz - November 9, 2004 12:28 PM (GMT)
I mean, how did they expect Tammy Macintosh to run in that costume?

I wonder how many times she fell over during the filming of that scene. If she did it should have made it into the outtakes on the last s4 dvd.

laughitupfuzzball - November 9, 2004 12:31 PM (GMT)

Bless her, she had the allergy problems with the make up too didn't she, she must have wondered what she had let herself in for.

It was very funny

willowroolz - November 9, 2004 12:36 PM (GMT)
It was funny when she tried to kill herself, too, although it shouldn't have been

laughitupfuzzball - November 9, 2004 12:39 PM (GMT)

I liked Chiana's reaction, still haven't learnt how to use a pulse rifle?

Not much sympathy from grey girl :D

willowroolz - November 9, 2004 12:42 PM (GMT)
It's the way Chi doesn't bat an eyelid when Jool punches her that always makes me laugh. It's like "Is that all you've got?"

laughitupfuzzball - November 9, 2004 01:16 PM (GMT)
 And Jool looks like she has really hurt her hand in the process

charlie2times - November 10, 2004 10:16 AM (GMT)
I had a spare bit of time so i watched this last night, or attempted to as my x-box seems to have great difficulty reading the farscape dvd's , except the new box sets, and i've only got season 1 in that format so far.
Funny they work on a cheap'n'nasty dvd player just fine!!!???
Anyway, between the freezings, i managed eventually to rewatch it, and realised what a crucial ep it really was. It sets up the whole of the rest of season 3 with the twinning, and Talyn and Crais's return, but stands out as a great story in its own right, not just a prelude to the shit hitting the fan later on!

The typically frenetic start where it was dock on the unknown leviathan or die, then giving way to the slow horror build up of what a nightmare place this was, with the odd 'jump' moment was great. Then we were treated to the old 'slasher' cliche of everyone splitting up, so they can be taken out one by one, a great homage to that genre, and a perfect plot device for the ensueing confusion.

When will they learn not to follow Crichtons 'cunning plans', it always leads to trouble. Leaving the girls at the transport pod while D'argo and he found the replacement parts was never going to work. Both Crichtons and Chianas constant curiosity was going to mean they all found themselves alone eventually. Chiana bumping into the cast of 'Night of the Living Dead', where all the 'zombies' looked suspiciously alike('cause they are!) , brought the 'horror' factor up, as did the whole decaying ship, and Crichtons gruesome discovery of the poor pilot.

From then on, their nightmare just got worse, D'argo dying so quickly (you knew he wasn't really dead, but he was, so........), and then both Chi and John starting to lose it, the first time i saw this i couldn't work out quite where this was going?
Then, Chi got twinned and it all fell into place, and you knew it was going to be all right. I was glad the Pilot had a (mercifully) qucik death, and glad the Karvoc did not, heh heh. The look on Da'rgos face as he was 'rescued' by Chi was a peach, was that girl biting or licking( it's that pain and pleasure thing)!!!

And then the punchline, John gets twinned, and they both survive, brilliant, and oh so obvious when you think about it.

Meanwhile Talyn and Crais are back, and not very well! Rygels attempt to murder Crais straight away made me cheer, Hynerians never forget, or forgive.

2 ships, 2 crichtons, too many crew, uh, i wonder what happens next?

I haven't got the season 3 boxset yet, but i wonder if a commentary would reveal just who the writers references and homages were for. George Romero, william golding,John Carpenter?

woohoo welcome to the rewatch Jon.

And I hope you haven't been picking up spoilers for this episode before you watch it!

And welcome aboard, Jon. Great point about the homages to the genre, especially the way they get split up. Definitely a touch of Romero in there. :)

I don't think there is a commentary on that episode but I will have another look at the extras later to see if its mentioned :D

willowroolz - November 10, 2004 11:11 AM (GMT)
I must confess that the only commentary I have listened to so far was Ben and Claudia's one on Throne For A Loss, which was very amusing.

Yeah, that is a very funny commentary, and very insightful, especially about 'Rygel' in the bag.

The trouble is that there are sooo many things to watch that making time for 'extras' is almost impossible, don't you think?

Can i do it in a 'manly' 'i wish i had an arse like that' way?

You can, but I'd lose all respect for you! ;)

I know what you mean about the extras. It's strange, the extras used to be the first thing I looked at on a dvd - the more the better. But I very rarely watch them all. The LotR extended editions and the Star Wars ones are the only ones I've watched completely, I think.

I know what you mean, depends. Sometimes I have been known to by DVD's just for the extras. :D

Steve listen to the Lani Tupu commentary on Relativity thats a good one.

btw the extras on the LOTR extended discs are the best I've ever seen, how much!

You know some commentaries will be good, like Bruce Campbell on Evil Dead, or John Carpenter on any of his films, but tv stuff seems to be a bit hit and miss. I like the Farscape ones, but the Bab 5 are pretty dull once you've seen what he's talking about. Has Firefly got any on?, 'cause i haven't even looked!

Firefly has got some brilliant commentaries, particularly the one for Serenity, which is Joss and Nathan Fillion just taking the piss out of each other for 90 minutes. It's always amusing to find out that Captain Tightpants was actually Captain No-pants in certain scenes.
