When the crew discovers just how badly John's trust in the aliens was misplaced, they resume the fight to save Moya...

willowroolz - October 16, 2004 08:56 PM (GMT)
Harvey: Why is it always the gentle ones that pay the price for everyone else's ambition? Hmmm?

Told you I didn't like the cliffhanger: the resolution to it is hilariously bad, almost like one of those old Saturday matinee ones where you see the hero's car plunging over the cliff, only to discover in the next episode that he actually jumped out of the vehicle at the traffic lights five minutes earlier.

Anyway, this all leads to us discovering that Neeyala's Phaztillon generator alters the phase physicality of an object, making it invisible. She has had members of her crew running around Moya sabotaging the crew's attempts at repairs in order to make them think that the Leviathan is in a worse state than she actually is. Bitch.

After their doubts about Crichton's decision making ability, the crew has now split into two factions to deal with the problem.

D'Argo has gained access to the mysterious ship they picked up at the commerce station in Suns and Lovers, and it - and the DRDs - comes in very handy in finding the last of the invisible invaders in a very effective sequence.

Aeryn finally talks to Zhaan about what the Delvian did to save her. Aeryn's way of reviving Pilot is quite impressive.

Ah yes, the alien makeup. Very good. The way the gills open up on their heads so they can shoot out the poison darts is very effective. The male and female of the species also look distinctly different.

I love the way Rygel's whole attitude changes when he finds out that Pilot likes him.

Jool's screaming can melt metal - which proves very inconvenient and allows Neeyala to escape her shackles.

Harvey in a tuxedo

Of course, the big deal with this episode is Zhaan's death. As the situation develops it actually becomes increasingly obvious what is going to happen, but it allows her to perish in an extremely noble manner, and completely at peace. The way it is written and shot is quite harrowing, and brings to the fore how much these people - her "family" - care about each other. I've never really been that keen on her as a character. Even so, it's a very sad moment. Farscape tugs on the old heart strings better than any other show (apart from Buffy and Angel).

For large parts of season 2 Zhaan had very little to do. Virginia Hey obviously got fed up with the laborious makeup sessions each day when her character had become so underutilised. It was her decision to go, although she wanted to go at the end of season two but David Kemper decided that the best way to deal with Aeryn's resurrection was to sacrifice one of the others. As a result he struck a deal with Hey to come back for four episodes in season 3. Farscape doesn't give you anything for free - there are always consequences.

The season of death is well and truly underway.

John: Winona, don't fail me now!

D'Argo: Do you know what troubles me the most? I did my best...I did the best I could, and it wasn't enough. I still lost them both.
John: My grandmother used to say, that...life is...a great wheel. Sometimes it grinds you down into the mud, and other times it lifts you up into the light.
D'Argo: Are we strapped to this wheel?
John: That's a given. Point is, is that most times you get a second chance -- you just gotta wait for the wheel.

Aeryn: It was a bad trade, Zhaan, your health for mine.
Zhaan: Don't undervalue yourself.
Aeryn: I'm just a soldier.
Zhaan: Don't underestimate yourself.
Aeryn: I'm being realistic.
Zhaan: Don't be afraid to understand yourself. We're not as different as you assume. Violent past, no faith in the future, and then a transformative experience aboard this very ship. My time grows short, and yours stretches before you. Use it wisely.

Zhaan: Ever my protector.
D'Argo: It's not you that needs protecting -- it's the rest of the universe I fear for.

Jool: Everything I have seen so far is despicable.
John: Welcome to the Federation Starship SS Buttcrack.

John: That's my dad's tux. Take it off. This is not mine. This is not my tux.
Harvey: You may control the venue but I'm going to make sure we look good, yeah!
John: Macon…Georgia…Macon, Georgia on the way to Lauderdale.
Harvey: College spring break, hitchhiking to see the strippers in Fort Lauderdale.
John: This is the truck stop. Hey you, no you do not enter my reality. You do not talk to me in my reality. If I want you I'll call, those are the rules.
Harvey: Unacceptable. And I suggest you sue for peace now. Your distractions are many while I'm totally dedicated to getting a measure of freedom. No more dumpsters, John.

Zhaan: If I am so needed and so valued and so wise then you will honour my words. You will obey me. For the longest time I feared physical demise because my spiritual essence was suspect. But now I know I'm worthy. Now I know the transgressions have melted from my soul. Now I know I shall meet my goddess and be accepted to her bosom. Sensitive D'Argo, exuberant Chiana, wise Rygel, selfless Aeryn, innocent Crichton. My children, my teachers, my loves, there is no guilt, there is no blame, only what is meant to be. Grow through your mistakes and know that if patient redemption will find you.
John: Wait for the wheel.
Zhaan: Thank you John Crichton.

Rygel: Goodbye you big beautiful blue bitch.

 It was Zhan's departing words to the crew that made me shed a tear. Very moving and a really well written exit.

It's been a while B)

Okay, finally thought I better get back into the rewatch (I may have had a bit of coaxing   )

Just rewatched Self Inflicted Wounds pt 1 and 2.

First off, I'm really gobsmacked Zhaan's actually gone, I hadn't realised she was written out, I mean they brought Aeryn back, from 'total' death. She obviously had a potash deficiency (sorry I know, I grow plants   )

No, seriously, wow, quite a sacrifice on Zhaan's part, so close to perhaps a solution. Beautifully written parting scenes by everyone, Steve's already quoted the Rygel line, which made me laugh and cry at the same time. Stark is so close to having a nervous breakdown, this has to push him over the edge. I'm not quite sure how/why they were so close, so little screen time together but still, this is science fiction after all.

I know I really should talk about the circumstances leading up to Zhaan's self sacrifice, but it's all mumbo jumbo science speak, so I'm best leaving that alone.

Okay, clever how the crew is split in half regarding Crichton's intentions, cleverer still, how the conversations are practically identical, priceless.

Aeryn slapping pilot, okay, got the desired result, LOL @ Rygels' turnaround after discovering pilot liked him

Scorpy in a tux, very dashing  Crichton in a tux, yummy

And again back to Zhaan, I think i may actually miss her, I'd started to like her with the last few eps. Quick word about Jools, will she ever stop screaming
