I was gonna make a website about Holtz and typed up his whole story from rewatching all his episodes. But now I really can’t be bothered to make the site and don’t want to bin the story, so here it is :) There’s probably a few spelling mistakes ;)

York, England – May 1764
Holtz is riding at night through fields and wooded areas, he’s riding at a great speed and is obviously looking for something. Holtz stops for a moment and notices one of his men waving a torch for his attention. Holtz then rides up to him where he is informed that they have found them (referring to Angelus and Darla). Holtz says, “Go” and the man lead him to where they believe the two vampires are. Minutes later Holtz reaches the house where more men are waiting, one of the men tells Holtz that they are trapped inside. He dismounts from his hoarse, grabs a torch and says “Burn It down If you Have To”. He kicks down the door then rushes into the house where everything is still and in place, “Where are they?” he mutters to him self. He then throws a chair and table out the way to reveal a trap door. On the inside of the door is a note that says “How Do You Hope To Save Others When You Cannot Save Your Own?” He then realises “They’re at my house”. While all this has been happening, Angelus and Darla had gotten inside Holtz’s house by pretending to be friends of Holtz, Sarah, the daughter had believed them and invited them in. They then killed Sarah, Caroline and the baby (Daniel, named after his father) – Holtz’s entire family. Holtz and some men ride to his house as fast as they can, he runs through the door to see Caroline, laying on the floor with blood dripping from her neck. He kneels beside her to touch her, he then puts his hands over his face and cries. At that moment he here’s the words “Papa? Papa”. Holtz recognises the voice instantly and says “Sarah” he turns to see her standing, holding her teddy bear. Holtz rushes over to Sarah saying her name and kneeling down in front to hold her. Sarah then says that mummy wont wake up. Holtz says, “Quiet now” and begins to sing a song to calm her down, he pulls back her hair to reveal two teeth marks in her neck and realises what’s happened. It’s at this point that two of Holtz’s men enter and say “Captain”. Holtz replies “Don’t come in here” they notice Caroline on the floor and say “sweet Jesus”, Holtz then says “Get Out!” The night passes as Holtz sits with Sarah, by morning the sun is shinning though the window, Sarah is huddled in the far corner fearing the sun, changing into a vampire. Holtz has been sat in the same place all night, watching her. The two men return and offer to take Captain Holtz away from this place, they say it’s the devils work. Holtz then says, not the devil, just a demon. The men then ask “What to do?”. At this point, Holtz rises from his chair, says “Whatever we have to” and walks over to Sarah and picks her up, she struggles and screams, shouting “No, Farther please, No”. Holtz carries her out side and throws her into the daylight. Sarah then bursts into flames and lets out a final horrific scream. Holtz then walks back inside the house.
Marseilles – 1767
Angelus, Darla and two other vampires (James and Elisabeth ) are walking down a town lane after setting a very large fire. Angelus mentions that it was a bad idea given that it’s a big welcome sign for Holtz to find them. James suggests that they stay and fight, he doesn’t believe all the hype surrounding Holtz, he makes note of him being “The Most Formidable Vampire Hunter In The World”. Darla reassures him that Holtz is every bit as bad as they say and that he’s been hunting them over half of Europe. After Elizabeth notices a pretty Locket in a shop window, James smashes through the glass to steal it, this alerts some near by law enforcement. James and Angelus stay to fight while Elizabeth and Darla head to a ship. Angelus thinks this is a bad idea, even more so when Holtz rides up on his horse with some more men. After dismounting, the first thing he asks Angelus is “Where is she?” (Referring to Darla). Angelus doesn’t give him a straight answer; instead he taunts Holtz, making reference to what were his wife and children. Holtz then decides he’s heard enough and punches Angelus, two guards hold him as Holtz points a steak to his heart whilst stating that he can keep Angelus alive for weeks, months until he gives up Darla’s whereabouts. Angelus begins to tell Holtz everything and offers him both the girls, this upsets James and a fight breaks out resulting in Angelus being shot with a crossbows and the two of them riding off and evading Holtz.
Rome – 1771
Angelus is running through tunnels underground, he’s running from men in robes carrying torches. After falling down a turn of in the tunnel, Angelus lands in a room where more men are waiting for him with crossbows, stakes and fire. Angelus turns to face these men, a few seconds later the big arched doors behind where he stands fly open and in rides Holtz, alone. He thanks Monsignor Rivalli and says that he’s in his debt, Rivalli says that this animal murdered his family, he then instructs his men to hold the beast, Angelus is now held captive in chains. Holtz mentions that the Monseigneur Rivalli performed the ceremony when he and his wife, Caroline were wed. Angelus mocks Holtz by mentioning that his wife was a heavy screamer. Holtz then tortures Angelus for days. Holtz mentions to Angelus that he lost him in North Africa, and that he knew he’d return to Europe but wanted to know why Rome? The city of all that’s holy? Angelus informs Holtz that it’s due to Darla, she loves the sixteenth chapel. Angelus then asks Holtz what he wants who then replies that he doesn’t want anything, he doesn’t trust Angelus to give him Darla, but he will find her. All Holtz wants is to see if a demon like Angelus can be made to pay for its sins. At this point, a flaming arrow is shot and kills one of the men Darla along with a few vampires appear, she apologises to Angelus for taking so long and orders the vamps to kill them all. She then shoots Holtz in the shoulder with a flaming arrow. A fight breaks out and Angelus and Darla get on the back of a horse cart, covered from the sun by a blanket. Angelus asks if they should kill Holtz (Who by this point is hurt, on the floor) Darla replies that they shouldn’t and that it’s so much fun ruining his life, he’s like family now. The two of them then escape.
York, England – 1773
Holtz is sat in his home in front of the fire remembering all the terrible things the vampires have down to him, it appears that he’s been drinking for some time. A figure appears behind him. Holtz senses his presence and without turning round says “Another step and It’ll be your last, if you’ve come for anything other than a fight you’re in the wrong place”. The figure replies “A fight’s exactly what I’m looking for”. Holtz gets up from his chair and asks him to be a man and show his face. A large demon comes out from the shadows and tells Holtz that he’s not a man. Holtz says you’re not human and holds a knife to the demons chest telling him he’ll get more than a fight. The demon (named Sahjhan) says that he thought Holtz might have liked some help killing Angelus and Darla. Holtz refuses the help and says that he’ll kill them himself, the demons says he knows for a fact that he wont and that he’ll never see them again and die a bitter old man. He says that it’ll be over 200 years before he’ll get a chance to confront either Angelus or Darla. Holtz mocks the demon saying “And is this the part of the tale where the demon offers the poor broken man a chance to change all that?”. The demon then says that he can bring Holtz to them, two centuries into the future through black magic on the condition that when the time comes, Holtz would show them no mercy. He’s says that if Holtz says yes he can take him to them this very hour, if he says no then he’s lost the once chance to avenge what they did to his family.
L.A - 2000
Somewhere underground, Sahjhan is reciting a prophecy to a stone tomb, commanding it to arise. The earth and ground begin to shake, the stone begins to crumble as Holtz emerges from the rubble and smoke. Sahjhan welcomes Holtz to the 21st century and informs him that Angelus is here and that it may be awhile before he can face him due to Holtz not using his muscles in a long time and that he’s weak. Holtz then jumps up and demands, “Just tell me where he is”.
The next day
Holtz is sat on a chair in Sahjhan’s underground layer, he is sat in front of many televisions, learning of all the history he has missed while incarcerated in stone. Sahjhan appears behind Holtz and says that it only seems like moments have passed but 227 years have passed since their agreement. He mentions that man has harnessed the power of the sun, walked on the moon and turned Arab desserts into fields of green. Holtz asks if England is still there and whether or not it’s changed, Sahjhan jokes that it went through a rough patch about 60 years ago, but it’s still there. Holtz says that he understands enough but asks with all these weapons of mass destruction and war, why none have been able to kill Angelus and Darla? Sahjhan replies that’s what you are here for and that their fates are intertwined. Holtz gets restless and wants to kill them right away. Sahjhan says that they will, but not right away, he hasn’t waited two and a half centuries to mess it all up. Holtz asks if he’s been tracking them this whole time. Sahjhan replies yes, but not in he way you think. There are other dimensions, other worlds where time behaves differently. Sahjhan has the ability to navigate these dimensions. He then tells Holtz to get some rest, he’ll need it.
Hours later, Holtz is pacing up and down the floor waiting impatiently as Sahjhan arrives, he then shouts “You’ve kept me here long enough, where are they”. Sahjhan replies “It’s not that simple”. Holtz then shouts “I’m tired of waiting” and attempts to grab Sahjhan but fails when his hands go right through him. Sahjhan then says “Like I said, it’s not that simple”. He then goes onto mention that if he was corporeal he wouldn’t have brought Holtz 2 and a half centuries into the future to do something he could have done him self a long time ago. Sahjhan throws Holtz a long brown coat instructing him to put it on and that he’s lined up some men to help them.
A few minutes later, Sahjhan (who has taken on the appearance of a human) and Holtz are walking down a sidewalk in downtown L.A at night. Sahjhan explains to Holtz that buildings are taller, machines are faster but people are still the same as they were in Holtz’s day. They still drink too much, fight and kill each other. Holtz asks if they still have families and receives the answer yes. He then says that he hopes these men Sahjhan has hired are ruthless bastards. They come to the end of their walk and Sahjhan knocks on a big metal door. A voice tells them to go away. Sahjhan identifies himself and they gain entrance, before entering he tells Holtz “This is where we get your men”. They enter the room and Holtz says “These aren’t men” after seeing demons working out and fighting each other. Sahjhan says that he should have said minions. He then goes on to say that these Grappler demons aren’t the sharpest pencils in the box, but they are merciless in battle. He then calls them over to meet the new boss, Holtz.
Hours later. Holtz has gotten inside the front garden of the Hyperion hotel, which is currently full of Wolfram & Hart operatives who are also looking for Darla. Holtz takes out one of the men from behind with his sword and walks though the main entrance asking “Where’s Angelus” The W&H men get the order to kill Holtz, Holtz then takes out all the W&H men in the room leaving only himself. A few minutes later, Angel rushes into the hotel lobby to be greeted by all of the dead W&H men that line the floor. He here’s the word “Angelus” and turns to face Holtz who’s standing in front of the main doorway, Holtz then says “I’ve been Looking for you”.
Angel in complete shock says “Holtz, my God” to which Holtz replies “You have no God demon”. Angel then says “Holtz, whatever brought you here…” but gets interrupted by two Grappler demons at either side of him, they hold Angel in place with long metal bars and chains. Holtz then says “You did, you and your demon bitch” Holtz then goes on to talk about how he slept for 200 years and dreamt of nothing but this moment. Angel tries to explain that he is no longer Angelus and has a soul but Holtz suddenly throws holy water into Angles face revealing Angels demon side, Holtz then says “Things look the same to me” “I will have justice”. Angel says that there is no justice for the things he did to Holtz, Holtz says that Angel didn’t do them to him, and he didn’t do them alone. He then tells the grappler demons to find the female (Darla), if Angelus is here then she can’t be far. While the demons go of searching, Holtz opens up Angel’s weapons cabinet and pulls out a very large sword. Angel asks how he managed all this but Holtz ignores him and thinks out loud what to do, now that he has Angel (Angelus as Holtz still sees him) what would be the best way to get Darla. He then asks if he stakes Angel, would she somehow know and come to his aid?. Angel asks what Holtz had to give up to get this second chance, Holtz says that he has nothing to give up and that Angel saw to that. Angel then says that he and Darla took a lot from him, but they couldn’t take his soul and that Holtz is being used in the service of evil and that his soul would be destroyed. Holtz then wonders if Angel really has changed and says that he doesn’t remember him pleading for his life so much. Angel then says “And I remember you used to work with men”. This angers Holtz and makes him strike Angel. A Grappler demon walks in and tells Holtz that they’ve got her, Holtz then tells him to bring her in. The Grappler demon returns with Lilah, Holtz says “This isn’t her” and flicks holy water in her face, she isn’t even a vampire. Lilah says no, I’m an attorney. Holtz asks if she knows what Angel is, Lilah says vampire, I know and gives a brief history of the gypsies cursing him with a soul. Holtz then asks Angel what she ment by all of it, Angel says it wouldn’t interest Holtz. Angel spots a grenade openly held by one of the dead W&H men, he tells Lilah to duck and kicks the grenade up to catch the pin in his teeth, he then releases the pin and the blast sends Angel flying backwards through the elevator doors to freedom. Holtz stands up and runs to the doors to find Angel gone, he then turns and shouts “Search The Grounds”. Holtz tells Lilah that if they send more men, he’ll kill them too. Lilah tells Holtz that the men were ment for Darla, Holtz then asks if she has a soul, Lilah tells Holtz that she’s still evil.
Back at Sahjhan’s layer, Holtz is arguing with him, angry that he wasn’t informed that Angelus now has a soul. Sahjhan says that it didn’t matter, an Angel with a soul is the same as an Angel without a soul. Holtz corrects him and says they’re very different and that he’s been hunting the wrong prey. Sahjhan admits he’s wrong. A demon walks in who has been working at Caritas and spying for Sahjhan. He tells them that Angel and Darla are there, hiding out, he mentions that it’s also a sanctuary.
Holtz walks down the stairs of Caritas where he’s greeted by Lorne who tells him that they’re not open for business. He hands Holtz a flyer and says to come back for the grand re-opening. Holtz says “Thanks” and walks back up the stairs signing a song, it’s the same song he sang to Sarah. Lorne read Holtz while he was singing and shouts everyone to run. The group (Gunn, Wes, Fred and Cordy) run into the bedroom where Angel and Darla are. At that moment a barrel of petrol and a grenade come flying down the stairs and cause a huge explosion. This completely wrecks the inside of Caritas, setting light to everything. In the bedroom, Angel asks what happened and why the sanctuary spell (which prevents violence) didn’t work. Lorne explains that things can still be thrown in and harm people. Angel knows that it’s Holtz. Lorne moves the bed out the way and says that there use to be an old loading dock where the wall was, it should be easy to knock down. Angel, Gunn and Wes manage to take the wall out and the whole group make it outside. Meanwhile, Holtz is walking past the flames towards the bedroom, he’s carrying a crossbow. Angel tells the group to go get the car, he and Fred stay with Darla who’s lying on the floor, it’s raining heavily. Holtz walks out to find Fred and Angel holding a baby. He lowers his crossbow and lets them walk. Sahjhan is shouting “Do it, Do it, Finish it while you still can, you can’t give up now, not after what you swore to me”. Holtz then replies, “I swore that I would show no mercy, and I won’t.
Hours Later. Holtz, Sahjhan and the Grappler demons (Who are eating junk food) are walking through tunnels to get back to the layer. Sahjhan is angrily mocking Holtz due to him not killing the vampires. Holtz tells Sahjhan that he didn’t tell him Darla was pregnant, she sacrificed herself for the baby. He says that Darla got off easy and that Angels death will be a great deal more painful. Sahjhan is tired of all the talk and just wants Holtz to stake Angel. Holtz says that getting rid of the Grapplers is the first step, they are merciless beasts, bred only to maim and kill, Sahjhan disagrees and says there are no steps, just stake him Angel. At this point the Grappler demons begin to weaken and fall to the ground, dying. Sahjhan asks what’s happening, they’re choking, Holtz replies, “I need more than mere fighters”. Sahjhan asks what did you do, Holtz says that he poisoned their drinks and that he needs more than mercenaries who are willing to kill for anyone with the highest price, he needs people who will die for his cause, he needs warriors. A Grappler comes up behind Holtz to attack him but Holtz, without turning, stabs the Grappler demon in the heart with his pocketknife. Sahjhan asks what stage two is, Holtz asks Sahjhan to use his computer to find obituaries.
Hours later (It’s now daytime) Holtz is standing in a back ally behind a chain-linked fence, he’s watching a door. Moments later, a redheaded girl walks out through the door, lights a cigarette and walks away. Holtz checks the obituary in his hand, which has a girls name, Julia Cooper and her picture, He then begins to follow the girl. Holtz looses her when she turns a corner, he walks up to where a cigarette has been discarded. Suddenly he turns to catch the girls punch with his hand and says “Not bad, though your punch could have been quicker without so much to drink” She then head buts Holtz who in turn throws her into a parked car. He then says “I know your real name, I know what it’s like to grieve”. She then mocks Holtz’s appearance and says, I’ll be on my way now. Holtz calls out her name, “Justine”. She asks you know my name? Holtz says he knows everything about her. He knows that her twin sister was murdered six months ago by vampires (the girl from the obituary) and that he wants to help her. Justine then tells Holtz she wants him to stay the hell away from her and then walks away. Holtz watches her walk of.
Later at night, Justine is fighting vampires in a graveyard, Holtz is in the shadows watching. He catches Justine as a vampire knocks her down, she asks what he’s doing here, Holtz replies “Watching you fight”. She continues fighting until the vampire has her trapped and is about to feed. Holtz then steps in and stakes the vampire, offering Justine a hand up. She asks why he took so long, Holtz said he wanted to see if she’d win, he then says that she lacks planning and strategy and that her passion works against her. Holtz offers to show Justine how to fight, she asks what he gets out of it, and Holtz replies that she’d help him kill a vampire, a special vampire who’s strong. Holtz says that he knows she wanders the streets making others pay for what happened to her sister and that’s where he comes in, he sees her talent and he sees her hate, he can help turn her into an instrument of vengeance. Justine says “Sounds Like Fun”. Holtz replies “It won’t be”.
Days later
Justine is sat at a table in Sahjhan’s layer, she has a screwdriver stuck through her hand and to the desk, and she’s in a lot of pain. Holtz is standing behind her, we learn that he is doing this for disobeying an order. She dusted two vamps when Holtz told her to walk away. Holtz says that we are here to determine if she has what it takes to join his cause. Justine says “speaking of here, would a couple of light bulbs and some indoor pluming kill you.” Holtz then asks why she’s wasting his time. Justine then asks what he wants from her, Holtz then replies “commitment, something you must now convince me you have.” Holtz asks Justine why she is doing this, she tells Holtz that feeling something is better than feeling nothing. Holtz then tells Justine that she can take the screwdriver out at anytime, if she’s still there when he gets back, he’ll consider the next faze of their “partnership”. He then walks away leaving Justine alone. Hour’s later, Holtz returns to find Justine still sat there in agony. He sits beside her as she says “I decided to stick around”. Holtz then says you asked what I wanted from you and goes on to say that he wants her to go out and find others like them, others that have suffered as they have, people with the same rage, the same fire, you’ll know them when you see them. He then, in one sharp movement, pulls the screwdriver out. Justine screams out in pain as Holtz offers her a handkerchief and asks “Are we clear? Have we learnt our lessons Justine?”, she says “we’re clear”, raps the cloth around her fist and punches Holtz then says “You son of a bitch”.
Days later
Holtz now has a small group of fighters for his cause and has also relocated to a new setting He, Justine and the others are gathered round listening to Aubrey talk. She is one of Holtz’s new recruits and has been sent undercover to Angel Investigations to learn more about them and get some inside info on Angels group. She tells the group all she knows and Holtz congratulates her on a job well done. Hours later we see three vampires chained up as Holtz’s men are training (fighting) Justine is sat on Holtz’s desk while he stands to read something. She looks at the pictures of the Angel Investigations team and asks how people could work for a demon like that. Holtz says that he once made a pack with a demon but Justine reminds him that it was to get to Angelus. Holtz then says that their intentions are good, however misguided (He doesn’t let her know that Angel has a soul). Suddenly, one of the vampires gets loose and attacks one of the men. Justine tackles the beast, knocking it to the ground. She then picks up a sword and pins him to the ground saying “Chains would be good now”. Holtz smiles on at his creation and says “I knew you were ment for this”. He informs Justine that they need to move on, events are moving faster than he planned. Sahjhan emerges behind the two saying, “Thank God, I was begging to get bored”. A startled Justine lunges for Sahjhan’s neck but with him being incorporeal, the blade goes right through him. Sahjhan jokes about his barber having the same problem, hence the long hair. Holtz orders Justine to stand down, it’s only Sahjhan. Sahjhan then says, “You owe me a dead vampire” to which Holtz replies, “Yes, well, how should I put this, what are you going to do about it? Nothing, that’s what, there’s nothing you can do. You’ve played your part Sahjhan now let me play mine”. Sahjhan asks what Holtz is going to do and mocks his new recruits and surveillance. He the goes on to call Holtz a coward and says that Caroline would think the same, reminding him of how she died. Holtz then commands Sahjhan to get out, Sahjhan asks or what, you can’t kill me. Holtz then says that he could trap his dimensional essence in a resikhian urn, they last a lifetime, which is if he doesn’t leave right now, forever. Sahjhan tells Holtz that this isn’t over, he then disappears. Hours later, Holtz is stood at the side of a computer screen, commentating on a fight that Justine had caught on camera when spying on Fred and Gunn. The other are grouped round listing. Holtz says that Fred outsized and outmatched the vampires because she was willing to die for her cause. He goes onto say that we too must be willing to die for the cause and to pay attention because they will be fighting them very soon, sooner than I expected. Holtz then turns to find Aubrey, who led Wes to the hideout. One of Holtz’s men suggests that they cut out Wes’s tongue and send it to Angelus as a message. He approaches Wes with a knife. Wes says “Maybe” and knocks then man down “Or maybe you could lie on the floor and bleed for awhile”. Wes then says “I didn’t come here to fight, I’m not your enemy”. He tries to persuade Holtz that he’s fighting the wrong man, Holtz jokes that he’s not even a man. Wes says that If Holtz wants a sacrifice then they should take him because he’s no more responsible for the crimes of Angelus than Angel is. Holtz asks if he’s just as responsible for killing his family. He then says that “Angelus is in his nature, the beast will re-emerge, you’ve seen it, you know it and that is why you are here, you’re afraid that he’s going to kill the child, and you’re right”. Holtz offers Wes a choice, his army is strong and will only increase in numbers, Fight against us and this war will be a bloodbath. Wes interrupts and says that this isn’t war, this is revenge. Justine asks what’s wrong with revenge and that it’s all some of us have left. Wes says that he doesn’t know what it was like for any of them, Holtz says that he will soon enough. He then says that when he put his son’s coffin in the ground, he had to open it to check he was in there and that a child’s coffin ways nothing. Hours later, a small earthquake begins and Holtz’s place begins to shake. He notices that a large cupboard is about to fall on Justine, Holtz rushes to her aid and knocks her down out the way, and the cupboard falls to the ground and smashes into pieces.
Days later at Holtz’s hideout, Justine is holding a vampire on a chain as one of the others spars with it. He gets knocked down and Justine in turn knocks down the vampire, telling the others to never turn there backs on a blood sucker, and that they should be able to trust their lives with each other. Holtz, who was watching whilst drinking, gets up from his chair, protesting about drinking tea from Styrofoam cups, Justine smiles and says she’ll get him some china ones, Holtz thanks her and asks if she’s ready. Justine says yes but worries that they’ll have to kill a lot of the people who work for Angel. Holtz says that they may end up killing all of them. Justine then says that she’d follow Holtz to the gates of hell, fighting vampires, they chose Angel and that makes them enemy soldiers. Wes then walks in and says “So I guess that makes it alright”. Holtz welcomes him and Justine asks what the hell he wants. Holtz tells Justine to be nice and that he is their guest, and also in the throws of a very difficult decision. Wes says that he doesn’t want anyone to get hurt, his soldiers or Holtz’s. Holtz says that he shares Wes’s hatred of violence and that he’s seen a great deal more of it in his life time than Angelus. Wes corrects him on Angels name and Holtz still doesn’t believe that he’s changed. Justine then takes out a knife and says that Wes was probably there to stab them in the back. Wes asks whom Justine lost, she was there in Holtz’s army ready to die for the cause, and she must have lost someone very important to her. Justine says that it’s none of his business. Holtz then tells Wes that it was her twin sister Julia whom was murdered by vampires. Wes says that he’s sorry for her loosing family and that the people he works with are like family to him, suddenly he grabs Justine and holds the knife out of harms way. He then says that he doesn’t stab people in the back. Holtz intervenes, taking the knife and saying that Wes is an honest man and that he trusts him. Wes tells Holtz that he doesn’t trust him but Holtz tells Wes that that isn’t his problem, his problem is that his friend is going to kill his own son and if he doesn’t do something about it, Holtz will. Wes then asks Holtz how long he has, Holtz gives him one day to do what’s right.
Later that day, Holtz and his men who are heavily armed walk into the Hyperion, Angel and the group are all in the lobby. Holtz asks where the baby is, Angel says that he’s gone out but he would have loved to meet him. Holtz then says that it looks like Angelus has made a good life for himself, Angel then says “Are we going to fight or should I make some tea?”. Holtz tells his men that he wants to keep Angelus alive, but not well. His men attack the AI team and loose while Holtz walks away. Else where, Wes has taken the baby and is loading up his car, he spots Justine who is pretending to be injured. She tells Wes a lie that Holtz was everything he said and that he turned on her. Wes tries to help Justine but she gets behind him and slits his throat, taking the baby and his car, leaving him for dead. Justine drives the car to a street near by where Holtz is waiting. They had set the whole thing up to get the baby from Wes without having to go through Angel. Holtz gets into the car asking Justine if it went well, Justine says that it went very well and jokes about Holtz paying for her dental work. Holtz then turns round to face the baby and introduces himself. “Hello son, I’m your father and that strong lady with the black eye is your mother, your name is Steven, Franklin, Thomas and you’re going to grow up with me on a little ranch in the middle of know where.” Holtz then asks Justine what’s it like in Utah, Justine says that it’s pretty and Holtz says “Lets go”. After a minute of driving, Angel in a stolen W&H car races up from behind them and forces them of the road into a building site. Two other W&H cars pull up beside him, Angel runs towards Holtz (who’s getting the baby out of the car) but gets knocked down by Justine. Holtz shouts at Angel “Any closer and I’ll snap his neck”. Lilah and some W&H men take formation and point there guns at Holtz and Angel, Holtz ask who the men are and Lilah replies that they work for her. Lilah asks for the child but Angel tells Holtz not to. Lilah then tells Holtz that these are automatic weapons that are pointed at him, they didn’t have them in his day and they fire 16 bullets per second. Angel adds, “and if they were gonna use them they would have, they want the baby alive”. Holtz then says “Something we all have in common”. Suddenly, Sahjhan appears saying that not all of us want the child alive, he made a deal with Lilah that they would kill the baby. Lilah goes back on her deal and tells the men to ignore Sahjhan, he can’t do anything. Holtz tries to leave but stands back when the weapons are cocked, Angel manages to take down one man and grab his gun, he then points it at Lilah. Holtz says that he is going to leave now, with him the baby gets to live, anyone tries to take him, he dies. Angel has no choice but to say “Take Him”. Sahjhan shouts “What is wrong with you people”. Holtz reassures Angel that he will take good care of him, as if he were his own son, he’ll never even know Angel existed. Sahjhan gets even angrier and summons up a portal to an evil demon dimension called Kortoth, the darkest of the dark worlds. Sahjhan threatens that he can either widen the portal, sucking everyone into a world they can’t even begin to imagine, or they can keep their deal and kill the baby. Lilah gives the order to kill the baby, Angel says no and raises his gun. Holtz then pushes Justine down and runs towards the portal and then jumps with the baby into the darkness. Angel shouts no and runs after them but is thrown back by a bolt of lightening. Sahjhan says that that takes care of his problem, he then closes the portal and tells everyone to have a nice summer, and he then disappears, leaving everyone in disbelief.
Day’s later, An 18 year old boy drops from a portal that had been opened by Angel in the Hyperion lobby, he claims to be called “Steven” and attempts to kill Angel but fails and makes a run for it. Later at night, he runs down an ally to be greeted by a terribly aged Holtz who says “Hi Son” to which Steven replies “Hey Dad”. They then walk to a motel where Steven asks for a room for the night. The following morning, Steven gathers food from a big metal box (vending machine) just outside the motel. Steven goes back up to the motel room where Holtz is just walking out of the bathroom saying “Good boy, you got it” Steven hands him the paper. Holtz looks at the date and says “Days, we’ve been gone only days” (Time moves slower in Kortoth which is why they have both aged 18 years). Steven looks out the window and says he does not like this place, too many people, not like home. Holtz corrects him and says that Kortoth was never his home, it was their prison. He then says that he should have known Steven would find away out, Steven says that Holtz shouldn’t have followed him, he would have came back after killing him (Angel). Steven then apologises for not killing Angel, Holtz tells him that he couldn’t have. It’s not in his nature. Steven mentions that he’s killed many times before but Holtz interrupts and says “only when you’ve had to” and that the real reason he came to this world was because he wanted to see him. Steven denies it but Holtz reassures him that there’s no shame in it and that he knew this day would come, it’s why he never kept anything from Steven, what his parents were and how he and Holtz came to be together, Steven says that God gave him to Holtz and Holtz tells him that’s correct and that it was to keep Steven safe. Steven tells Holtz that he still wishes he had killed Angel. Holtz says that if he had, he wouldn’t be the boy he raised, or the man he knows he’ll be one day. He tells Steven that there are more things to learn which is why Steven must go to him (Angel) “walk in his world, learn all you can. But remember what I told you, the devil will show you bright things, many colours ”.
Hour’s later, Holtz stands in an ally and from a distance, watches Steven and Angel play fighting and laughing together, having fun.
Back at the motel, Holtz walks in to find Steven sat at the table eating biscuits. Steven tries to tell Holtz that he didn’t fall for any of Angels “tricks” and that he’s seen his true face. Holtz replies with “And I’ve seen yours”. Holtz sits down and tries to explain to Steven that anyone who’d seen them together would know that he belongs by Angel’s side. Steven refuses to believe all this as Holtz tells him to go back to him, he keeps asking why? Why are you doing this? It was Gods plan. Holtz says that the time has come to give him back to Angel, there are answers to what Steven is (The bastard son of two vampires). Steven says “you were the one who told me not to be deceived, but you’ve let yourself be deceived”. Holtz then says “If I could stop this I would son, but we were brought here by forces beyond are control.” Steven storms out the room saying “You’re wrong”.
About an hour later, Holtz answers the door to see Justine, she says his name “Daniel”. Holtz invites her in and they sit on the beds, she tells Holtz that before she met him, she was nothing, she was dead and that Holtz gave her a reason to live again, even if it was just all a lie. She goes on to say that she would have done anything for Holtz, followed him into Hell if he’d have let her. She can’t believe that Holtz survived it and asked how he did. Holtz replies “My hate kept us alive”. He then says "Yes. I found I had to stay alive that I might pass on my legacy of hate. But something happened in that place, Justine, something changed. Amidst the most unspeakable ugliness the hate turned into love. Love for a son. Hate is not enough. I found that love is far more powerful. Now there is just one thing I need you to do for me and then I can finally be done with vengeance."
Hours later, Holtz is sat at his desk. He feels Angel’s presence and asks whether he’d need an invitation with it being public accommodation, Angel says no and holds Holtz up against a wall and says “you stole my son” to which Holtz replies “I kept your son alive, you murdered mine”. Angel lets go of Holtz in shame. Angel then says “I was different then” Holtz says “Yes, so was I. You feel remorse, you feel remorse yet you can’t express it”. Angel asks Holtz if he wants him to say he’s sorry and that he couldn’t because it wouldn’t mean a thing. Holtz then says that it would mean a little, not much but it would be something. Angel then says “Then I’m sorry, for what ever little it might mean, it’s all I’ve got.” Holtz then says “Not all, you have a son”. He goes on to explain that by depriving him of that son, he could allow some measure of justice, but he was wrong. Angel then says “Taking Connor from me, was never Justice, it was Vengeance”. Holtz then says “Or maybe vengeance it what I do now, give back what I took. I’m an old man now, I’ve nothing to offer the boy, and you can give him what I can’t. But every time you look upon his face, every time he calls you father, you will be reminded of that which you took and can never give back. And if that is vengeance, I find I have no taste for it”. Holtz then asks Angel to give Steven (Connor) a letter, he says that it’s not sealed and that he expects Angel to read it, he should. Angel asks why he’s doing this, Holtz tells Angel that he loves his son and that it’s the only way he knows he’ll go on loving me. Angel takes the letter and walks for the door. Holtz says “He wont accept it at first, He’ll try to find me, He never will”. Angel carries on out the door. Connor, who has learnt that Angel has gone to visit Holtz, is running back to the hotel as fast as he can. Angel stops on the way back in his car to read the letter, it says;
Dearest Steven,
This is a most difficult letter for me to write, you mean more to me in this world or any other but your best interests must come first, which is why by the time you read this, I will be gone. I hope that one day you will be able to forgive an old mans weakens which compels him to say these things in a letter than to attempt a goodbye in your presence, would be impossible to me. I fear I would never let you go, and I must let you go, I know that if I didn’t, you would only end up hating me. And that I could not bear. Your destiny lies with Angel, I know that now, you will have a better life with him. I am comforted with that certainty that and the knowledge that with him, you will discover your true purpose and come to know who it is you are ment to be.
My only prier is that I have prepared you well enough for what lies ahead. I trust I have, be brave
Lovingly, your father.
Conner runs nearer as Justine holds Holtz against the wall outside the motel. She is upset and tells Holtz Not to make her do it and that she can’t. Holtz says “We already know you can, you promised, you said that you’d do anything for me, now go on Justine, I’m not asking you to follow me into hell, just help send me there” “Do it”. Justine then stabs Holtz in the neck with a screwdriver, Holtz then asks again, she does. With his last breath, Holtz says “Steven” and then dies. Justine continues crying. Connor reaches the motel and runs into their room-shouting dad, he then hears Justine crying and rushes to the side of the motel, he sees Justine on the ground where Holtz’s body lays. He rushes over and kneels down to Holtz. He sees what look like vampire teeth marks on his neck and says “Angelus”. He holds Holtz up and hugs him, crying. Justine says “This didn’t have to happen, your father was gonna leave, he just wanted to talk to Angelus”. Connor asks, “Leave?” Justine says, “Angelus won, he could have just walked away” Connor says “It’s my fault, he’ll pay” Justine offers to help him kill Angel but Connor refuses. Justine then says “You don’t want to kill him? After what he did? Then what do you want to do?”
Connor and Justine drive out to an field, Justine says that it looks like where he came from (York, England) Connor says maybe it’s like the ranch where he was supposed to grow up in Utah. Justine asks if Holtz told him all about that and Connor says yes, it was just gonna be him and Holtz. This upsets Justine. Justine then says that they need to burry him and offers to do it; Conner says, “No, he was bitten by the beast, he may rise again”. Connor then bends down and tells Holtz that he will do everything he’s taught him, lay waste to the evil. He then kisses him on the forehead and says, “Sleep now father, and forgive me”.
Connor then throws the body out of the back of the truck and grabs an axe, he then cuts of Holtz’s head and buries him.
