Title: 1.11 War Stories

Persephone - September 27, 2004 09:56 AM (GMT)
Wash regrets insisting he be allowed to accompany Mal on a mission, after the two men are captured by Adelai Niska - the client who previously hired Mal to steal the medicine bound for Paradiso

:o Wash puts his foot down

I liked the way that Wash & Zoe's relationship was addressed in this with the third party Mal totally bemused.

Although it was gruesome it was also quite funny the way they managed to get through the electrocution by argueing about Zoe.

Welcome return of Niska who died a death befitting of the little coward he was.

Loved Zoe's - this is something he has got to do for himself followed by Mal's - no it isn't

Zoe was strong & tough as ever, fronting up to Niska and showing no emotions despite being handed Mal's ear.

Great shoot out at the end to save their Captain, Book proving quite a shot -hmmm, Simon proving useless but River - handy in a shoot out if nothing else :)

Outta Sight - February 28, 2005 12:36 PM (GMT)
Sooooooooooo good, LOL. The Wash/Zoe/Mal triangle is extremely funny. Love it when Zoe turns up to save them and Niska starts to offer her a trade and she says "him" and points at Wash and then backs up saying "oh, sorry, you were going to ask me to choose, weren't you?" :lmao:

And one of the funniest bits in the entire series, imo, as Mal fights with Niska

Zoe: Jayne, this is something the Captain has to do on his own.
Mal: (fighting for his life) No...no it's not!
Zoe: Oh. (shoots)

:lmao: :lmao:

I love that bit :lmao:

I thought Niska got away, and it was one of his gimps henchmen that Mal was fighting with? I certainly hope he got away, he'd be a great character to bring back now and again.

This was another ep I saw with commentary, then immediately again without. It was the first time I heard of Alan Tudyk's 3 magic switches and they spent a good 5 minutes laughing about the 'tache in Out of Gas. I also liked the way Jayne ate his apple - speared with what looked like a letter opener.

It's strange that I can describe this as an average episode, simply because the overall standard for Firefly was so high.

This was superb  it had everything you could want of a TV programme. Found it one of the most gripping, edge of the seat episodes so far. It had everything.

Poor Kaylee, unable to fire the gun and what a shot River's got :o

Don't think. Shoot.

er... that was this ep wasn't it

Yep :)

It amuses me that such a fuss was kicked up about the ear severing scene in Reservoir Dogs when the one in this episode is so much more graphic

I really really liked this episode. I really liked the gun fight at the end. Feel sorry for Kaylee not being able to shoot anyone. River has amazing aim. 9.5/10

Yet another fantastic episode

The way Mal keeps Wash awake and alive by distracting him about Zoe, and how Wash knew what he was doing and even though he had just been tortured he was ready to leap back into danger to save his captain and friend :tear:

I'm never sure if I should feel more for Kaylee or River in this episode, Kaylee looks scared of River now nd River may have just lost her only friend

I just have to quote now.....

Kaylee and River: No power in the 'Verse can stop me!

Simon: I'm thinking about growing a big black mustache. (beat; deadpan) I'm a traditionalist.

Zoe: Take me sir. Take me hard.

Jayne: I'll be in my bunk.
:lmao:

I really liked this ep too. I like the way they addressed the tension between Mal and Wash after it had been hinted at in "Out of Gas", and how Zoe chose Wash over Mal. I also liked how they and the rest of the crew volunteered to go and rescue him. The torture scenes were particularly brutal (I agree the ear bit was far more graphic than the similar scene in Reservoir Dogs). At first I didn't realise what Mal was doing when he was arguing with Wash. I just thought it was funny that they were still arguing about Zoe when they were about to be tortured, but then realised that Mal was trying to keep Wash from breaking. He's such a hero

River is starting to scare me. First she stabbed Jayne and now she's shooting people. Ok they were going to shoot Kaylee, but River shot them with her eyes closed. No wonder Kaylee's scared of her now, I would be. And I'm getting very suspicious of Book again. He's far more capable with a gun than you'd expect from a preacher. And it can't be a coincidence that both he and Niska referred to the works of Shan Yu and "truly" meeting a person by seeing how much torture they can take. I'm starting to think that maybe he worked for the alliance at some point as an interrogator or something (which might explain why the Alliance were willing to treat him in "Safe") and became a preacher to escape his violent past. Or maybe he's not a preacher at all, maybe he's a conman. :ponder: I'm also beginning to suspect that he's taking too much of an interest in River. I'm probably wrong on this one. Does anyone else have any thoughts?

laughitupfuzzball - June 26, 2005 04:45 PM (GMT)
:ponder: the mystery of Book, I think he is definitely on their side now, but certainly has been involved with top level Alliance in the past.

What his agenda is I'm not sure but I feel he is a good man. :)

My God. I suppose it had to happen didn't it? An episode of Firefly that I watched all the way through and enjoyed throughout.

Perhaps it was the wine I had with my lunch. Perhaps it was the "hilarious" torture scene, most likely it was Book, "Says nothing about kneecaps though!"

I think the comic book has infected me with a firefly liking infection.

I may have to try and watch the series from the begining now

Wish me luck.

prophecy girl - July 24, 2005 06:48 PM (GMT)
love the torture scene

and the end when mal tell zoe about the bet and zoe agree (tension what tension?) and wash panicked and say no way

:yahoo: Yay!!!

so much of its greatness is in the dialogue

have you heard the commentary where they comment because they were blindfolded they were going round bumping into large metal objects  makes it even funnier - in a twisted way

:yahoo: for Jamie

As Alex said the commentary is hilarious :lmao: Love the bit where Alan Tudyk is going on about Gina Torres being taller than him

ok i agree that is a great bit of comedic writing (very funny), the funniest bit imo...

Zoe: 'shepard, dont the the bible have some pretty specific things to say about killin?'

Book: 'very specific, although its somewhat fuzzier on the subject of.. kneecaps'

simply BRILLIANT!
