Title: 1.8 Jaynestown
Persephone - September 27, 2004 09:46 AM (GMT)
When the crew returns to a planet where Jayne participated in a heist gone bad, they're shocked to discover that Jayne's past actions have turned him into a local hero
Crichton Kicks - October 11, 2004 11:38 AM (GMT)
It's becoming more apparent to me that Firefly is really just a comedy with aspirations for drama, that happens to be set against a science fiction backdrop
Again, the humour is prevalent here, so much so that a single joke/idea becomes the central theme for the entire episode.
Beyond that though, characterisation also furthers. The Simon/Kaylee dynamic advances appropriately, and surprisingly we get to see a different side to Jayne at the end as he agonises over the Mudder's death on his behalf. It's good to see Jayne struggling with his couple of speeches as well. Not quite as eloquent as Mal, but equally effective in these circumstances, although to be fair, the crowd of Mudders would undoubtedly have cheered anything he'd said.
The Inara sidestory was kind of interesting in a distraction kind of way, that eventually turned out to be more important than you'd have thought.
Bonus marks for the song, Jayne's face, not to mention everyone else's, especially Simon's, was a delight. "No, this is what going mad feels like....."
Again, I enjoyed this one thoroughly, and it joins the elite band of Firefly classics. Although most of the episodes here do
Mal:- "You wanna tell me how come there's a statue of you here, looking at me like I owe him something?"
Jayne:- "Wishin' I could, Captain."
Mal:- "No, seriously, Jayne, you want to tell me--?"
Jayne:- "Look, Mal, I got no ruttin' idea. I was here a few years back, like I said. Pulled a second-story, stole a lot of scratch from the magistrate up on the hill. But things went way south. I had to hightail it. They don't...put you on a pedestal in town square for that."
Mal:- "Yeah, but I'm looking at some fair compelling evidence says they do."
Simon:- (staring at the statue) "This must be what going mad feels like."
Jayne:- "Uh, hey, I got a idea. Instead of us hanging around playing art critic 'til I get pinched by the man, how's about we move away from this eerie-ass piece of work, and get on with our increasingly eerie-ass day. How's that?"

laughitupfuzzball - February 24, 2005 12:30 PM (GMT)
Absolutely hilarious episode.
Love them coming across the statue and winding Jayne up for a change. Jayne's disguise  Jayne squirming during the song and everyone's reactions particularly Simons.
Kaylee putting Simon in his place in the morning, and her later teasing of him - so when we slept together
Didn't like one-eye so much but necessary to reveal the truth behind the legend. I did feel sorry for Jayne, he seemed gutted when the mudder sacrificed himself for him.
Great episode

:lmao: I forgot to mention Book's scary hair
- He's putting it away now
- It will still be there
Outta Sight - February 24, 2005 10:17 PM (GMT)
Although I love the humour in all the episodes this was the one that made me laugh the most, from discovering the staue of Jayne to the folk song dedicated to him  His oblivion to it all and the group's complete bewilderment was hilarious. Kayleigh and Simon's burgeoning relationship is also great to see and I like the development of Jayne's character towards the end when he eschews the adolation of the town and tells them to stand up for themselves.
I now have a hankering to hear the hero Jayne song all over again, LOL

Altogether now... :guitar:
Jayne
The man they call Jayne
He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor
Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for
Our love for him now ain't hard to explain
The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne
Now Jayne saw the Mudders' backs breaking
He saw the Mudders lament
And he saw the magistrate taking
Every dollar and leaving five cents
So he said, "You can't do that to my people"
He said "You can't crush 'em under your heel"
Jayne strapped on his hat
And in five seconds flat
Stole everything Boss Higgins had to steal
He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor
Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for
Our love for him now ain't hard to explain
The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne
Now here is what separates heroes
From common folk like you and I
The man they call Jayne
He turned 'round his plane
And let that money hit the sky
He dropped it onto our houses
He dropped it into our yards
And the man call Jayne
He turned 'round his plane
And headed out for the stars
He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor
Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for
Our love for him now ain't hard to explain
The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne!

Cardelia - March 25, 2005 12:09 AM (GMT)
Another great ep :)
I wish Adam Baldwin had done a commentary on this ep. Either with Joss or Nathan Fillion - that would have been so much fun to listen to. As it was, I laughed so much anyway - this really is up there with the best of the eps.
I thought it was interesting that the foreman of the mudders had what sounded like a South African accent. It seemed really out of place here - I'm sure there must have been a good reason for it, but I can't for the life of me think what it was. (it'll probably turn out to be something as simple as hiring a South African actor, but never mind)

"River, he's putting the hair away now" :lmao:
Watched it again last night. Tip top episode. Jayne's great - obviously - but I love the scenes between Simon and Kaylee. The last scene is excellent, too
Jayne: Hell, there weren't a one of 'em understood what happened out there. They're probably sticking that statue right back up.
Mal: Most like.
Jayne: I don't know why that eats at me so.
Mal: It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of him was one kind of a son of a bitch or another. Ain't about you Jayne. It's about what they need.
and best of all
Jayne: I don't know. You think we should be using my fame to hoodwink folks?
Mal: You better laugh when you say that.

Another great episode  . Don't really have much to add to everyone else's comments - the mere thought of Jayne as a folk hero was hilarious, and as for the Shepherd's hair :fear: . River's "just keep walkin' preacher man" was also funny. And I won't even mention the song :lmao: . The scenes between Simon and Kaylee were nice too.
I wasn't surprised that it was revealled that Jayne had hidden depths, but I thought it was handled really well. He showed he had a conscience underneath his neanderthal exterior, but I like that it was articulated in Jayne-speak rather than an artificial grand speech.
Two discs down, two to go................. I don't want it to end :tear:

Absolutely spot on isn't it, nothing pretentious about this show, they could have ruined it with his speech but it was absolutely perfect.

I must admit I only found Jaynestown alright and nothing special. It did not seem to have the narrative drive of the previous episode or the same flair when it came to dialogue. It missed the Joss hallmarks in other words. sk
